It definitely could be the sun! While red currants are sun lovers, relief from intense afternoon sun can be beneficial in keeping the plant healthy. Maybe try using something to block some sun at the hottest parts of the day? If it’s not that I would check it for pests! Hope this helps :)
Hi Ron, welcome to Greg!

I think you're right that your red currant is struggling in your climate. They usually prefer something cooler and thrive with sunshine during the cooler hours of the day and shade during the hottest times.

I would say it has heat stress. So not specifically that the sun is too hot, but more than everything is too hot and there isn't enough water to compensate.

If you can move it to a place where it will get afternoon sun that would be ideal. If not I'd recommend giving it a shade cloth and mulch to try and cool it down.
@ZippyMira77 Youβ€˜ve gotten good advice. Because Red currants typically thrive in USDA hardiness zones 3-8, with the sweet spot generally being zones 7a-7b. These zones offer a moderate climate with cooler temperatures that red currants prefer, along with minimal summer heat stress. So depending exactly in which area of SD county you’re in. San Diego County is located in USDA Plant Hardiness Zones 8, 9, and 10a, 10b, and a little bit of 11a. These zones are determined by average minimum winter temperatures. San Diego also has six CIMIS climate zones, including Desert, Mountain, and Transition zones. Not ideal for red currents.
Thank you everyone for your help. I went ahead and put a shade on top of it and have not watered in 4 days. It is dry about 1 in down and I'll water in a few days. I don't live in a super hot place as I'm only 12 mi from the ocean so we're talking about weather that never gets hotter than 85Β° or 90Β°. I've noticed that leaves are curling up at the corners. How does one tell if there are parasites or bugs destroying the roots?
