My first ever philodendron
My partner came home with this beauty last night after I nerded out the other day to him about variegated monsteras, I’m so lucky 🥰
but I have never owned a philodendron before! I’m guessing a variegated variety will be harder to own, so I’m looking for any advice or tips to get her happy and healthy and ready to thrive!! Any info o should know about watering, soil mix, lighting and best place to put her etc 😍
she’s currently in isolation as she was from Bunnings (and I really don’t trust my local Bunnings pest wise) and I have some pest and fungus troubles with some other plants I don’t want to spread to her, I’ve sprayed her down with some neem mix, anything else to get her settled?
I’ll repot her once she has settled down, would you suggest a bigger pot or same size?
Any tips or advice is greatly appreciated! ☀️🌿✨

Congratulations on your first Philo! 🥳 They're not too bad diva-wise imo so you've totally got this! 💪
Good humidity (check) great light (check)... Unlike her Pink cousin she's not a climber, rather a self-header like a Birkin, but sometimes Philos do get top heavy so you may find staking her in the future helps (though she won't need a traditional pole!). The other thing I find with Philos is their unfurling leaves have a habit of getting stuck!! A nice mist spray can help stubborn leaves to unfurl, coz it's best not to "assist" if you can help it
.. that way lies leaf damage more often than not! 🤦♀️😂 But sometimes it's just necessary to help gently pry a stuck leaf free! (Especially when the tip gets stuck and you end up with a crazy bubble looking thing! Philo owners will all know what I mean I've no doubt! 😂).
Other than that... Just enjoy her! They can surprise you with throwing random pink into their leaves and they're generally really chill compared to some bratty plants (Calathea I'm looking at you all! 👀🤣) xxx

Honestly i think people struggle more with certain wild-type philos than variegated ones 😂. One example is verrucosum, which is TERRIBLY finicky with humidity. These wild-type philos are mostly not adapted to the avg home humidity, i guess.
That being said most variegated philos also appreciate high humidity, but can tolerate lower levels. They don't like direct light too. Avoid south facing, as these tend to warm up too much [or north facing if you're down under]. Also, a chunky aroid mix is best.
Have fun with yours!

@HayleyQ Ahhh what a sweet partner you have! Such a pretty philo for your first one🤩 You got some great advice so I’m sure you will do great with your new plant! On a side note once you go down the #Philodendron path it’s a slippery slope☺️. They are soooo addicting and there are so many varieties!!
Great advice here! Your first one is a beauty! I love philos, but I agree with @mtplantlady it’s a slippery slope. They are too pretty to resist. I’ve noticed that more big box stores are carrying the white variations, so I think you should be ok. Philos are pretty hardy. I don’t do much except provide great light and lots of friends and they reward me with pretty new leaves (definitely get the bubbles). Thank you @PoisedAlbo for the moss pole suggestion. I never thought of using one for humidity.
