Mty rattail is looking a little pale... any suggestions?

I've just had to pull up an entire branch because the stem was all dried and shriveled. I water regularly, but he's still looking paler towards the stem. I'll take any suggestions

How are the roots?  It seems to be in a large pot for the plant. Since the water is not been used it may have allowed root’s to rot. You may need to propagate the green part asap as a insurance policy.

There's great cactus soil out there, too.  They don't like too much room and too much water.  I wish you the best!
