Help identifying cacti

My husband got me 2 cacti a few years ago and unfortunately I lost the tag to it. Both of them pop up as golden torch and as barrel cactus. Im not sure if that even makes a difference in care since both are desert cacti, but I want to make sure of what I do have.

I have had plants for a while, but I am trying to take better care of them now. As soon as I have a better soil mix, ill be repotting some of them. If anyone also has any tips for care, that is greatly appreciated!

@ComicalAlbo26 Hi there Dakota! πŸ’• I’m useless with cacti, but it would help more people see your post if you include hashtags (#) within the main body of your post. They don’t work if you add them by comment. The more the better and they can be anywhere in your post! I suggest editing your post by tapping the β€œβ€¦β€ in the top right corner when you’re looking at this post, and adding these hashtags:

Nadia is so sweet! I think it looks like a barrel cactus 🌡 but I’m not so great at identifying it. When it comes to cacti and succulents, the more loamy the better, so to speak, and cacti are pretty resilient if you kind of just let them do their thing. ☺️ As far as that goes, you can use potting mix, mixed with a little more sandy loam. Just make sure you have a well-draining, bright spot! But it looks like to me you’ve been taking great care of it!
@DreamMachine thank you for the tips! And the hash tags to add.
@idplantthat thank you! I have tried to find a more sandy mix, but the options are scarce right now (I went out today lol). I will be looking more in spring, or hunt down a greenhouse. Desert cacti are what ive kept alive the longest...I figured based on my memory, they would be the best fit for me to start with. Thank you for the tips as well!
@ComicalAlbo26 my pleasure! I love seeing people get the help they need for their πŸͺ΄ babies ❀️ And when in doubt (or need) I always just throw in more perlite! I often did this when planting on a budget and there was no πŸ’Έ for β€œfancy/specialty” amendments. 😁That’ll do in a pinch 🀏🏼
@DreamMachine I did repot both cacti in new soil with added perlite since both were becoming hydrophobic. There was dry soil around their roots even though they were watered the other day. They got bigger pots with proper drainage, and they got a good bottom water with a small shower to knock off soil and dust. Im hoping that they dont revolt after that.
@ComicalAlbo26 that sounds good to me πŸ€·πŸΌβ€β™€οΈ but I have been proven untrustworthy to the cacti race πŸ˜‚ I’m sorry babies!! I love your colorful prickliness but you don’t love my temperate rainforest locale πŸ˜†
@ComicalAlbo26 I know Amazon has an already 5-gallon bag premixed with sand and cocoa coirβ€” all that. It’s Fox Farms, but I can’t remember the name. Ugh, but it is Fox Farms. Keep it posted. I’d love πŸ’• to see how big it gets.
