How do I spruce up my newly inherited 80 year old rabbits...

My elderly neighbor had to move away unexpectedly and called my mom, very upset that he left behind his rabbit foot fern which he says has been in his family for generations, and asked her to take it. So now we have it here and it’s not in the best shape. Does anyone have any suggestions on what I could do to help it revive? Prune out dead looking rhizomes? Fertilize? It’s currently hanging outdoors where it receives morning sun until around 10/11 am (which I think may still bestil be to much tbh) and then shade the rest of the day.

OMG! Is it really 80 years old? That’s w
I wasn’t finished typing. Lol. I was saying that’s wild!! I have never heard of them. That’s why I love plants/succulents I’m forever learning of some new species. Sorry I don’t have any advice. Good luck though!!
AHHHHMAZING!

I would seriously consider trying to find a way to give it new soil. The soil is probably so deleted that it can produce many fronds.

Do you even SEE dirt in there?!
@Boymom-plantmom do you have any ideas?
This is INCREDIBLE! I wasn’t aware of this plant and to hear that it may be around 80 years old is flabbergasting! What a remarkable gift.

I can’t offer any advice but please take this offering of an article from the extension school at Clemson.

There is actually a contact number at the bottom of the page. I bet they would be absolutely thrilled to help with your plant. IME botanists love when people make use of their skills.
@MeekSweetleaf I looked it up and it’s possible for it to be that old! It’s incredible so hoping to do what I can to hopefully send him a picture eventually of it thriving
@sarahsalith yes I was thinking of starting with this, it’ll be quite the challenge because the rhizomes are pretty buried deep and interwoven with the basket it’s in. I don’t see any soil. I’m worried that some rhizomes are probably buried deep and being squished which I read can lead to root rot and death. Hoping to not let it get any worse!
@HeraMonstera thank you! I will write them, I would love to see this plant thriving again soon
Isabel- please take pictures if you think about it. I have a small version of your magnificent plant! I love #LegacyPlants! (:
Wow wow just wow! I wouldn’t even know where to start! I’m assuming it’s just the wire cage and not foundation?? I would cut it out, get and gently place in another with a coco coir base with a small amount of soil in the bottom. Possibly then sprinkle soil on top??? 🧐🧐 Whatever you decide Please share!!! So magnificent ❤️
