Curling leaf on prayer plant?
So I literally just got this gorgeous darling #PrayerPlant in the post yesterday, and I could not be more excited to see her grow!!
However, I did notice that one of the central leaves came quite curled, and Iβm wondering what couldβve caused that.
I wanna keep this darling as healthy as possible, so any other tips for this type of plant would be appreciated!

@PiousWaterfern @Prentyce there might be several reasons for curling leaves, and it isn't always that easy to find out why. Especially when you don't know how it was treated before you got itπ
But as the leaf has those yellow spots it does look like the plant is getting ready to abort that leaf for some reason. (It might just be old too).
It is a good idea to check the roots. That soil looks kind of compact.
Environmental shock really is a thing with these plants, and root-rot and curled leaves might often be a result of thatπ
Another reason that haven't been mentioned yet is that they might curl their leaves like this if they are in a draft (like by a drafty window, or near an AC or heater). It usually effects more than one leaf, but for all that we know the others might have bounced back while it was "too late" for this one leafπ€·ββοΈ The temperature during transport might also affect it.
As long as the rest of the plant seems healty and doesn't get worse I wouldn't worry too much. But a repot and quaranteene is always a good precautionππͺ΄

@PiousWaterfern check the roots immediately π₯Ή I also got a gorg Calathea & it was root rot π₯Ήπ. My other Calathea (pinstripe) it was nitrogen poisoning π«£ best of luck! Iβm sure weβll find whatβs going on and how best to keep your beautiful plant thriving π€©π±
@Prentyce NITROGEN POISONING???? WHAT
@ImmenseJade50 quarantine is a good point. I always forget to do that π how long should I quarantine for?
@PiousWaterfern what type of water are you using? Mine did that with tap water. I switched to distilled for my prayer plants and they were fine. The simplest explanation is usually the right one. How much light is it getting? Sometimes they curl up to reduce the exposure to light. mine like to be on a shelf about 10 feet away from a window. Theyβre living their best life there. Also, itβs in coco coir, which is good. It doesnβt look wet. So my guess is the light as the card says 1 foot away.
@TheOddAsity has excellent advice! @Catplantaddict @ImmenseJade50 @PiousWaterfern definitely check light needs and everything !! Oh yea and distilled water! I canβt afford to keep buying distilled π₯Ή so I got this water purifier that actually works like a charmπ€©β¨ comes with a test kit so you can see the difference between the tap water and the filtered water!!
@TheOddAsity I havenβt watered her yet but Iβll keep that in mind! The leaf was already curled when I took her out of the box on Tuesdays
@Prentyce I havenβt un potted her but a few of her roots are sticking out of the bottom and they look alright - slightly stained from the soil but nothing to worry about. What are the symptoms of nitrogen poisoning?
Oh def not nitrogen poising π€©β¨π± @PiousWaterfern curled leaves, browned edges & ammonia smell ππ«£
@Prentyce oh no that does sound really bad π how did you treat it? Just in case it happens!
@Prentyce @TheOddAsity @ImmenseJade50
Ok guys Iβm still confused π she looks all good and sheβs working on a new leaf right now, but Iβm still concerned about this one leaf. These yellow spots are only on this leaf and the rest look healthy so Iβm not entirely sure what to do π

@PiousWaterfern let me hit up a professional :) Iβll see if VERONIKA is on π€©π±β¨ @MockingJay
@MockingJay oh great, thanks! I was super worried that this was an early warning sign of some horrible disease! Thanks for helping out!
Update! @Prentyce @TheOddAsity @Catplantaddict I found out why that one leaf wasnβt doing too well while I was repotting last night.
She wasnβt attached to the main plant(s, there were two in there) and had no roots! The other roots all looked healthy while repotting but was weirdly root-heavy on one side and not the other.
Hopefully sheβs gonna even out a bit and become a gorgeous big plant!

Canβt wait to see this baby thrive π€©π₯³
@PiousWaterfern haha! Then there is no wonder at allπ It probably got knocked off in the shop or something and they just put it back inππ±
You miiiight be able to get it to grow roots if you put it in a glass of water (make sure the second node is also under water), but I wouldn't bet on it at this pointπ
It is not unusual to put several plants together in one pot, as prayer plants tend to grow really long single veinsπ± To get them more bushy.

@MockingJay thatβs exactly what Iβve done! Not holding out hope since my last few clippings (from various plants) havenβt rooted, but it is still winter after all Β―\_(γ)_/Β―
