Boss’s Plant

My boss handed me this and said β€œI brought it to the plant dude to fix” because I did so good with the ones in her office πŸ’€πŸ’€
Not even sure what plant it is. Rubber tree maybe? She said she forgets to water it and when she does it’s just a little bit. Also no clue what the little thing around the base is, she said she got the plant from Home Depot.

What can I do to save this thing? I’m about to take it home and check out the roots, but other than repotting, clipping off the sad leaf, and maybe chucking this dead stem, I don’t really know what I’m doing with rehabbing plants. Any advice?

That is a croton petra. Once you check the roots to make sure they're okay, you shouldn't have to do much to it other than water about once every 7 to 10 days. They get droopy when they need water and if they go without it for too long, the leaves will start to fall off. Make sure the pot has drainage!
@rosegoldlotus cool, thank you so much!! The pot is one of those ones with the attached drainage dish that you can pull off, is that enough drainage?
When you check the roots check for netting around the roots. The last picture looks like there’s something around it. Remove it it’s suffocating the roots
@Basementdweller yes, as long as there's a hole in the bottom of the pot. You can leave the drainage dish in place of course.
