Cactus propagation?

This cutting is from a Rhipsalis paradoxia cactus (wasn't an option on Greg), not an Easter cactus.

I'm not sure if I'm propagating it correctly. It looks like there's a root growing in the water, but there's also one growing in the middle of the plant near the top (see photo). I've never propagated a cactus or any species that roots this way.

Should I be propagating it in soil instead?

I just placed the tip of mine into a shot glass with water that only went up about 1/2 inch and it grew roots. Can you post a pic of how yours is sitting on the glass? You can get it to stand up better if you put Saran wrap over the glass and then gently poke a hole in for the plant
