I have never fertilized. In my experience, they will shoot "spiders" or pups when they are root bound. As the plant is trying to get the nutrients it needs. Just my experience.
Mine take a while to mature and then have pups
I adopted a spider plant a bit more than a year ago and i read that it tends to sprout when rootbound but also if the plant is still young or 'immature" it wont sprout yet
Both mine are sprouting their first pups.
It comes as they mature ☺️
I also never fertilize my spider plants and hears they have to be root bound to get little baby spiders
