I am no help with an elephant bush. I have had two and neither survived. Granted they were clearance plants. But still. Good luck to you.
Generally if your stem is mushy it could be due to overwatering. I’d check your roots and your soil.. if the soil has a smell it’s probably got a little rot, you might want to consider putting it in a larger pot, and very well draining soil with some Pom. And then lightly water on the outer rim of the plant not directly on it.
This is one of my cuttings I’m doing right now. You want to treat them kind of like a succulent. Add sand and charcoal to your chunky medium; you can even do an orchid bark blend; they’ll do fine in that or a bonsai soil. (Personally, I’ve just used a mix of sand, cocoa coir, and an orchid mix with perlite and charcoal in it. I’ve had great success with it. - I hope that helps. Ohβ€” if your trunk is mushy and does have an infection, you will want to treat it before putting it back with other plants. Remember as well, these guys like higher humidity and good air circulation along with bright, warm places. They don’t like drafts. So just be careful.
I have a few of these. I treat them like succulents. Chunky soil mix and only water when it’s complete dry. Also, terracotta pots help!
