New Hoya Plant Mom

#Hoya I got him from a plant nursery that shipped out from California. I waited the 2 weeks before repotting into a terracotta pot…but on the 28th, this is what it looked like before repotting. Did I wait too long? Or is it still adjusting to the new environment? My great-grandmother had one that lived 60 years and I wanted to follow in her footsteps with this plant baby…any kind advice is appreciated… πŸ₯Ί

It's in a big pot. The plant roots don't absorb that much water. Therefore the plant sits in watery soil for too long. You need to put the plant in a smaller pot, just slightly bigger than the plant.
@SvelteKingfern this one was slightly bigger than the plant…but I’ll go back to Lowe’s to find a smaller one…
When you take it out of pot, inspect the roots, cut off the black/brown and mushy, sprinkle cinnamon on roots, and repot it (in a dry succulent soil). Don't water for 5 days, then water only when the soil is dry (put your finger or a skewer in soil and see whether dry or not). Put the plant in half shade. After a week, give the plant 2 h of morning full sun, the rest of the day in half shade. And wait, wait, wait for it to recover. The plant is very weak, but maybe, with good care, it'll bounce back.
@SvelteKingfern thank you so much. I’m trying really hard to keep this one alive since I grew up with one in my home for so long. 🩡
No worries. Please, keep me posted how it is going.
I know how you feel. Some plants are very special. πŸ’š
This is the size of pot it should be in.
Compactas are tricky I will say! I have had to save one of mine multiple times, but I agree with everyone about the pot. Hoyas love to be tight in their pot and so the new pot should only be about an inch bigger than the rootball. Compactas grow SOOOOO slow and so giving them too much room will cause problems.
