NEED URGENT HELP!!!!! Hi greggies! I need i help with one...

#OldManCactus
2ft to light, direct
6โ€ pot with drainage
Last watered 1 year ago
Iโ€™m sorry about your cactus. On your Gregโ€™s plant information, it indicated, โ€œNo Drainageโ€. ๐Ÿ˜ง This can cause overwatering and root rot. Trim away any damage roots with a clean sterilized scissors. ( I know this part is scary) You have to remove the dead bottom part of the cactus and attempt to propagate the healthy top part of your cactus.
Allow the cutting to dry for a couple of days. This will allow the cut area to develop a callus.
Before planting it in cactus/succulent soil, dip the stem in a rooting hormone or a little cinnamon.
You can add rocks at the bottom of your pot to give it more drainage. (See website below for info on how to grow cactus without drainage.) But, I donโ€™t recommend growing any cactus without drainage.
I hope your plant will make a speedy recovery.

Try repotting it into new medium and if there is no drainage in that pot either drill a hole in the base or use a different one. When you repot it plant it a bit deeper to aid in support and maybe even use a few chopsticks or other item to help prop it up. GL
Hello, Anna! Welcome to Greg!!

Since you've had it for ages, can you say when you noticed the bottom turning brown?

The brown and flopping over is a sign that the base has rotted. Possibly it's been damaged or it's a sign of overwatering.

Personally, if that were my plant, I would cut it (with a sharp knife so you don't crush it) at the red line, let it scab over for a few days and then place it (don't bury it) on the soil.

You can use toothpicks or rocks to keep it upright and in place.

Over the next few months, with the proper care (WATER SPARINGLY), it should produce roots and anchor itself into the soil. ๐Ÿ˜
hmmโ€ฆ it appears to be root rot. try new soil in a pot with drainage. also, if you notice a lot of flies congregating around it, put some ground cinnamon on top of the soil so they donโ€™t eat away at the roots.
@Ada3 Hi Ada! Thank you so much for commenting and trying to help! This cactus means a lot to me and i really don't want him to die ๐Ÿ˜ญ the pot has drainage! I just forgot to update the info. It has several holes and was vibing in the sun just fine a few days ago. Oh man.. cutting it off entirely is really scary..but i do have some rooting powder on hand. I suppose surgery is the way to go ๐Ÿฅฒ๐Ÿ™
@frogsnrainbows oh god ๐Ÿ˜” i was really hoping it wasn't! I do have some small flies around and was already suspicious they might be looking for a good spot. I will unearth it and see what the condition of the roots is like ๐Ÿซฃ
@sarahsalith Hi sarah! Thank you! I've been around for a while tho! Even volunteered to help kiki with getting some new plants after she lost hers.๐Ÿชด

It was fine, or so i thought, until literally yesterday. It was producing new growth and plumping up nicely. Then suddenly....boom. keeled over. It could be that the curtain smacked it. But reading all the replies I'm thinking root rot was probably the evil culprit ๐Ÿ˜ญ oh man cutting him up is scary but.. if i have to i will do so to save him. Harry needs to live! ๐Ÿ˜”โค๏ธ
@WildlingWitch yes you did!! Thank you for helping her! I remember now! It's been a long year)

You can totally save your cactus. I've chopped and propped mine too.
