What Plants Like Vermiculite or Coco Coir, or Enhanced Ca...
So, Iβm wondering if you have had success using any of these products with any type of plant? Who knows, might buy the plant so I can use the soil π€π #PlantAddict #SoilMix #NewGrowth #PlantTherapy #NewPlantMom #brunchataudreys @Idplantthat @SuperbRaspfern @princesspitstop @Bee_Balmer @Boymom-plantmom @BuffCaperspurge @CutePolypremum @LaLaslovlies @Just1More

@LaLaslovlies for which of your plants?
@DesertGreen all of them π
@LaLaslovlies @DesertGreen Like mixed in with a succulent soil mix? I've never used the Limestone but have used the Coco Coir mixed with perlite,orchid bark and charcoal at times that I use for all of my tropical plants as well as succulents.
@DesertGreen I've found that all of my plants like a well draining soil. No plant that I own likes a consistently moist soil though.
@princesspitstop What kind/brand of charcoal? Would it work for new soil of over watered Prayer Plants? How much of each ingredient do you add to the mix? π€ππ
@LaLaslovlies whatβs your mix ratios? π
@DesertGreen I usually get this and mix in some succulent soil. I usually mix them together until my ancestors tell me to stop lol Since it's already premixed I use maybe 2:1
2 parts of the premix to 1 part Succlent soil. Just to where you water it and it flows right through. My Calathia is in that mix as well.

Is there a plant charcoal , or am I buying bbq and smashing coals? π @Boymom-plantmom
@Bee_Balmer thank you, and Iβm sorry. Hooray π for getting back up, and starting over.
@princesspitstop wow! Thatβs a happy Calathia π€©
@princesspitstop is there a premix option for succulents? How much soil does a succulent really need?
@DesertGreen a lot of plant charcoal is, I wanna say, bamboo?? I pay a little more and buy Tezula and, like most people on here, I make my own mix too. Sounds like youβve got great advice already! π https://tezulaplants.com/?srsltid=AfmBOorXH_JWgIK096QHRmHL7nylUyqNx-VEoIXzyqgS6uVFWtheGK8A if you want I check it out. The owners are darling, and so amazing at answering questions and helping you out as well.
@Boymom-plantmom cool, thank you. Guess Iβll put the sledge hammer back πͺ
@Idplantthat great customer service is a huge feature for me. Thank you.
@DesertGreen π€£
@Bee_Balmer @Boymom-plantmom @Idplantthat @princesspitstop I appreciate all of suggested mixes. Does anyone know of any plants like Vermiculite? Coco coir? Limestone?
I've got a full bag of each and don't know what to do with them π πͺ΄ I've had them too long to return them.
Other uses would be appreciated, too π

@DesertGreen You're killing me over here picturing you with a bag of charcoal and a sledgehammer π make sure it isn't the instant light kind. Seriously though don't LMAO
@princesspitstop π€£π€£π€£
@princesspitstop hahahahahahahaπ€£π
@DesertGreen Iβm with Heidi thatβs a hilarious image! Cocoa coir, I believe, you can use in almost all plants? As for limestone, if you have a home or yard, grass loves limestone! But Iβm sure @princesspitstop @Boymom-plantmom have some great ideas! π‘ Those two ladies have great advice π
@DesertGreen The way I understand it is that the individual bags of substrate you have are meant to be mixed together with soil to make a chunky mix for your plants. Roots need oxygen to breathe and they don't like to sit in water so adding amendments to the soil create air pockets within the soil that allow the roots to get the water they need for the plant as well as an oxygen they need to thrive. Someone correct me if I'm wrong but I'm pretty sure that's how it works.
@Idplantthat Rachel!! How are you sweet love?? It feels like we haven't spoke in a good minute π
@princesspitstop I totally agree. Basic principles, right? Iβve just never heard of these three ever being used in a soil mix. I thought it was due to only growing succs.
@Idplantthat using the limestone for grass, is fantastic! β€οΈβ€οΈβ€οΈ Iβm rehabbing my backyard, and will be planting some grass π
@princesspitstop I was just thinking about you! You know, if Iβm being honest, Iβve seen some better days. Today is my sonβs birthdayβ 17! But sad π heβs not with meβ¦ How are you doing, hun? How is life and things in Texas? Are you all dealing with some crazy weather as well with this crazy dang hurricane coming? π€―
@DesertGreen I just emailed you about tomorrow π
@princesspitstop Nice
@Idplantthat Iβm sorry for your heartache. Hurricanes????π±π±π±
@Idplantthat No crazy weather other than it's STILL in the 90's but the lows are in the upper 60's We don't normally see cooler weather in the form of a cold front until mid October. I'm patiently waiting. I'm so sorry you aren't able to be with your son. There were a few times when we lived in South Carolina and he wanted to finish up school in Houston with his friends where we were apart during birthdays and holidays. It's hard on a momma. Even now that we're in San Antonio he still lives in Houston. We aren't 1,000 miles away from each other anymore but we haven't had a dependable vehicle to drive 4 hours to visit until now so things are looking up. Thank God! But yeah Momma I feel for you. π
@princesspitstop same here!
@princesspitstop bahaha
@LaLaslovlies YAY!!!! Thank you πππππ
@DesertGreen calcium magnesium fertilizer /trace mineral. It comes as 1 product called cal-mag. Cacti and succs like peat better cause they like a ph 5.5-6.5 so its slightly acidic. Trops really can take either for the most part but anything that likes acidic will@prefer peat anything alkaline coco. But most trops are ph nuetral thats why either works fine. Also coco chunks are fine for cp but its recomended not to use ground coco with cp.
@princesspitstop oh goodness! Thatβs tough, being apart is hard! Holy cow, with your weather, Iβm not good in heat, sun π or anything like thatβ¦ think Wizard of oz with water is me with sun and heat. π€£ You are such a trooper, Heidi! I donβt think Iβve heard you not just bring positive and sweet! Itβs a really admirable quality. βΊοΈ
@DesertGreen YW! I dump it all in an 18 gallon storage bin & it sits beside my potting bench . I like a super chunky mixπ you can adjust accordingly!
@Idplantthat I'm melting π¦ lol You're so precious Rachel π I figured there's plenty of negativity in the world. I'm trying to balance it out πͺπ
@TheConservator I understand. Thank you for clarifying, and sharing your knowledge and advice. π€©π€
@TheConservator so adding limestone to my 1part soil : 2 parts perlite, would help my cacti and succs?
@DesertGreen hello ππ½ good to hear from you. Yes Iβve use vermiculite and coco along with orchid bark in my soil and have success with Pathos
, Hoyas and Monsteras.
I have not used limestone. In moderation they donβt seem to have a problem.
This little ones has thrived with the above combination including perlite. Hope that helps

@DesertGreen itβs my baby nerve plant lol π
@DesertGreen this is Lazarus: he also is thriving with the above combination, including the vermiculite
@DesertGreen
A late good afternoon π.
I use Wonder Soil... a coconoir mix...for all of my plants.
They love it!
I don't have any succulents or cacti, but use it on "regular" plants.
It's organic and full of natural nutrients.
I order mine from Amazon.
It's a little pricey but we'll worth it, as it expands.
Thanks for the tag!

@Preciousplants1 Absolutely! I don't suppose you have a % recipe for your mix?
@BuffCaperspurge Really?!! Perlite is from lava? I didn't know that. Lava rock is interesting, but a bit out of my price range, currently. I still need more plants. You know what I mean? π€£
@CutePolypremum YW, βregular β, my Lithops, Jades, and Haworthia, are letting that slide, this timeβ¦
@BuffCaperspurge no worries under it's so less $$, than lava. π
@Preciousplants1 @DesertGreen so sorry for the delay in responding!
my recipe for my soil is pretty much the same as @LaLaslovlies except I donβt use spectrum moss.

@DesertGreen I never learned how to use spectrum peat moss. π€·π½ββοΈ donβt really know why!
@Preciousplants1 nice on both.
@Preciousplants1 if it works, right? π
@DesertGreen I hear a lot of people talking about it, so I bought some! πItβs compacted in a little square shape but guess I could ask some questions about it. ππ½
