And another one…
So, I killed my last one of these by trimming all the “browning” leaves, and only AFTER the quick decline that followed (🙄), I reached out with a question about whether I’d ever get red leaves again…
I’m embarrassing myself, I know, but can someone tell me what’s actually going on with my Queen of Hearts? #PaintersPalette #Anthurium #NotSoHappyPlants

2ft to light, direct

5” pot without drainage

Last watered 3 weeks ago

Sarah @WildNorth I have a Painter’s Palette, and it has been a learning curve for me. My Painter’s Palette had red leaves which were scorch by to much sun. Since that time, I have not had red leaves again. I have read your plant card, and Painter’s Palette do not like direct sunlight, indirect is preferred. You also have them in a planter without drainage, and they do not care for that.
I dunno much about anthurium except they need lots of humidity. @CourtlyKingfern, I’m tagging you again cause Audrey and Judy aren’t on Greg anymore.
@TheOddAsity I’ve become obsessed with controlling the temp, lighting, humidity (we may have touched on this previously—we’re those people now 😂) and I still can’t figure it out!
@WildNorth the two people I know with them have moss rings on top. They put wet sphag on top of the potting medium and spray the moss to keep it moist. Like every other day. They said they like it around 70% humidity which seems almost impossible unless you have it in a humidity cabinet or under a cloche?
I know they like to be evenly moist in well draining soil (the people I know that aren’t on Greg use fox farms). I wish I could help you more.

@TheOddAsity well, hey, I just happen to have some moss I just took off of my Hoya and Ginseng! 😂
@TheOddAsity having done that, it makes perfect sense. Now we cross our fingers for all three of my babies I’ve traumatized 🙃
@SweetAzurebluet Hariet I didn’t know you had one! I would have tagged you (tucking that in my back pocket!)
@WildNorth we have ALL been there. I recently just traumatized my new Thai con. I could have sworn I added it to the app and I’m over here waiting and waiting and waiting to water it until a leaf turns yellow. I go searching and no Thai con in my oasis. You’d thinking would have enough sense to just water it, but that would be simple! 😂
@TheOddAsity Good Morning, ☀️ my dear! No worries! I had mine for quite a while. Trial and error still, but he’s still holding on ! 😉
@SweetAzurebluet it looks like you’ve got a “red” leaf making a comeback?! But that little guy looks like he’s seen things! He definitely has character! I love it!
@TheOddAsity 😂 Thanks much!
@SweetAzurebluet @TheOddAsity this is all so helpful, and validating!
I found some Spanish moss I had saved and thought that might be a better way (opposed to the green stuff) to keep her roots damp without drowning her, and I really like this pot for this particular plant BUT everything I’ve had in it succumbed to root rot, so yeah, drainage is an issue. It wouldn’t be the first time I’ve taken a drill to a ceramic pot, but for now I put a pebble and perlite basin in the bottom, fresh dry soil in the middle, and moss on top. Now if I can figure out the lighting situation and resist the urge to overwater, we might pull through! Good thing plants are a relatively inexpensive hobby, am I right?? 😅

Hi, @WildNorth , don’t be embarrassed. Anthurium are fussy. I’ve been growing these a while and they are rated to be difficult - the velvety textured ones. Anthurium are going to be a challenge if you don’t monitor their humidity. I can’t see your plant card but I can offer advice:
Does your pot have drainage so the water doesn’t sit at the bottom. All water must drain away if you must be able to bottom water so they can wick the water upwards. They require little water but rain water or distilled water will work.
They need a bath once a month to avoid mites if they aren’t in an enclosed area. If you can wipe down the leaves with a soft, damp but warm cloth and walk away.
This one can be misted daily but only in the morning before 7am or after 7pm. A fine mist to help with humidity. You can also get a smart humidifier if you want to but know that your humidifier will run and it could be that the humidity could be pushed away from the plant since most aren’t “targeting” humidifiers which you can point directly at the plant. One of the best places for it to sit is near the kitchen sink so if get the humidity it needs whenever you use your sink.
Keep a regular light over it. Not too bright since Anthuriums don’t really like bright light.
Be careful with the soil type you use. Thanh people think this plant can grow in orchid bark but it can’t. You can mix potting soil with a bit of orchid bark or pine bark to create air pockets and avoid root health problems.
Using a clear pot inside a decorative pot makes it easier to check the moisture in the soil. You can also water it and set it on another tray to bottom water.
The red are the inflorescence flowers and you can get them back once she is happy again. Do not fertilize but feed it a balanced plant food. I use Fortified 20-20-20 which works well with all of my plants. I initially started using if just for my anthurium collection but I use it on all of my babies to help them thrive. Not too much to avoid triggering a problem, just 1/4 scope in 2 liters of water is enough.
Let the yellow calm away in its own. The plant may be utilizing those leaves as nutrients if it’s not getting the right nutrients from you right now.
Keep it away from mirrors or cold glass. They like staying warm and hate reflective surfaces where light can reflect into their foliage.
Be patient. I’m not sure where you are in the world however just giving it time to grow will help. This plant is like all prayer plants and cannot thrive with lots of attention. A bit of water with the food once a week if the soil is dry works and just enough light to inspire growth. Let it get used to where you place it but watch the watering, temperature, and nutrients. Do not use an unbalanced food because it will cause more issues.
Anthurium are beautiful and can go dormant if they get cold. As long as the roots are ok, new foliage will emerge.
I recommend these tips since each anthurium has its own personality and has its own needs. It needs medium light and very little water and a touch of neglect. That humidity is essential for the foliage.

@AnthuriumQueen thank you so much! This one might be another victim of trial and error, but I’m motivated to re-commit!
My biggest problem right now is achieving high humidity and a warm enough environment without scorching the leaves with direct light. I have several plants in this boat 😕 is there an easy solution I haven’t found?
