Can it stay in the same pot forever? Is there ever a need...

Unfortunately, no potted plant can or should stay in the same pot forever. Some may be able to stay longer due to growth speed, but not forever. The roots will eventually become bound, and when that happens, the plant will slowly suffocate or suffer from dehydration due to the soil's inability to hold water.
Some plants will break the pot themselves if the material is flimsy enough, leaving you no choice but to change it. You are also more likely to hurt them if you let them become root-bound because pulling them too forcefully out of their pots can damage their roots, and Fiddle Leaf Figs are already very sensitive to changes, more so than other plants, to the point that they can die if you stress them enough.

How do I know when itβs time to repot? Itβs in the original plastic pot that I bought it in from Home Depot a year ago. It was already a fairly tall plant when I bought it. The pot is about 12β diameter. And so far the plant is doing well. It ever growing new leaves. Iβm guessing that there is maybe a maximum size pot at some point.
