Thanksgiving cactus not flowering

Hi everyone!

I have a question about flowering. I started this Thanksgiving cactus from cuttings several years ago and it has yet to flower. It gets decent new growth and seems happy otherwise.

My mom also started one from cuttings around the same time and hers has flowered.

Is it normal for some to take longer than others?

Any insights would be greatly appreciated.πŸ™‚ #thanksgivingcactus floweringPlants">#floweringPlants

Since it’s a False Christmas Cactus, they normally bloom right around Thanksgiving. Mine does. It’s amazing but it senses the time of the year. I have read you can trick them into blooming by changing their light, less light, but I have never tried it. Mine likes the light. @Eelhsa
@PlantHapppy , okay! Yes, I know they typically bloom in the fall. Mine is several years old now though, and it has yet to get any flowers.
@Eelhsa That is strange and it looks really healthy. Let’s hope this year is the year! πŸ™πŸΌπŸ˜„
@PlantHapppy , I do hope so! Yes, he does seem great otherwise.
Cool looking cactus! I wouldn't worry about it flowering, it seems happy. Does your mom's plant get more sunlight or fertilizer? Maybe she's keeping her gardening tips a secret lol πŸ˜„
@HedwigRhoda , thank you! I don’t think her cactus gets more light. For many years she also kept the larger plant between two Northwest facing windows. It never seemed to mind low light.
For these to flower, they need a nightly temperature of around 10-13 degrees Celsius for about two or three weeks. You could try and simulate this, or wait until temperatures start dropping naturally. When temperatures start dropping, I’d recommend placing it as close to a window as you can. During this time, you should also reduce your frequency of watering to help stimulate blooms. Good luck :))
@plantt , that’s very interesting! I wonder how my mom has been so successful over the years with hers. πŸ˜†

I don’t think my parents’ house gets anywhere near that cold.

Maybe I’ll need to stick my cactus outside on some of these cooler nights!
This tip has worked for some of mine but not all: when the weather gets colder move the pot closer to your window pane so that one or two tips of each branch touch the cold window pane just slightly. Really.
@ValiantAtom13 , that sounds like an interesting idea! I may try that. πŸ™‚
Cool!!
@Eelhsa Hi I noticed your card says there’s no drainage this could cause issues and they also love direct sunlight . Try putting it closer to the window and see what happens . Giving it its happiest place will produce your flowers . BTW it’s very beautiful . Good luck πŸ€
@ILoveMyPlants, Thank you!

Yes, I have considered the drainage issue, although it is getting such nice new growth and looks so happy that I really don’t want to disturb it.

I use a moisture meter and am very careful not to overwater. As it’s been in that pot for 2-3 years now, I think it’s doing pretty well. πŸ™‚
@Eelhsa love your cute potted plant, I notice the card states no drainage holes. You can be β€œcareful”watering but if you ever do mistakenly overwater it, it will indeed cause root rot, pretty much -all plants need to NOT have wet feet so to speak. And allow excessive water to flow out the bottom. This could also be why it does not bloom. It does not have the β€œbest conditions β€œ to promote flowers. That being said the change in temperature & light also promotes flower buds and blooms. Hopefully this year yours has success!
