Salamanders are carnivores so they likely are eating whatever is chomping in your sweet potatoes but not the ones causing the issues.

Do you have photos of what is eating them, or the damage? Common sweet potato pests are: aphids, sweet potato weevils, and several beetles.

How sure are you that's it's a salamander [or any amphibian for that matter]?
