This winter is kicking my arse ð
Although this is about basically my ENTIRE plant collection it's mainly effecting my pothos and monstera adonsonii. (and my spider plant but that's a whole other story)
Last winter was fine, no issues at all, barely any leaves lost, no deaths. This winter is a different story entirely. I've moved house this year and I've had a plant try and die on me almost every week so far since the beginning of November.
yellowing leaves everywhere I look, browning tips, leaves dropping, just generally unhappy looking plants.
Other than checking their soil for root rot which they don't have, pests which they don't have. And buying a few more grow lights to try and give them some more light I don't know what else I can do.
A lot of my pothos are babies and I'm down to the last 2 or 3 leaves and my Monstera vines are more or less bare at this point.
I don't like to repot or mess too much with them in winter because I'm UK and they tend to struggle to bounce back if repotted outside of growing season, but I'm not sure what else I should do.
Any advice at all will be helpful, please!

I'd suggest investing in a humidifier or grouping several of them together, if they're not already, to increase humidity levels. Misting does very little towards raising humidity and can be detrimental to some plants by causing leaf rot and fungal infection. Your new house may keep the air drier inside than the old one. You can pick up a hygrometer (humidity level measuring device) on Amazon for fairly cheap.
Hope this helps and Good Luck ð keep us posted!

I agree with Marissa @Lifeis2short You might want to invest in a humidifier if keeping your plants grouped together doesnât raise the humidity around them to their liking. You could also move them to a bathroom that gets used, but it does look like a lack of humidity issue.
I agree with everyone about the humidifier BUT I would like to add, check your nutrient levels! I am currently going through this with 2 out of my 6 pothos plants. 2 of them have a nitrogen deficiency. I figured it out soon enough but the biggest sign was all my yellow leaves, starting from the bottom up.
@AloesAndElves try adding some cool black coffee to the water for nitrogen. Not all plants like this, but pothos, African violets, begonias and Christmas cactus do. You can google the amount of coffee to use and which plants like it. I have just been adding a small amount like half a cup to a 6 cup watering can. So far no complaints! Christmas cactus seems impressed!
@nellz4estfairyz i will definitley try that next time! I just used up the rest of my 1-1-1 miracle grow fertilizer that i don't think does squat ðĪĢ but i'll give it a couple weeks & try coffee!! I like the natural route more
@PlantPeach hi! Your house reminds me of my house in that it sounds like you may not get a ton of bright light. Most of my windows that are appropriate for placing plants in only get medium to low light throughout my whole house. I too have invested in some grow lights, and it has definitely helped supplement sunlight. I also have a natural gas powered furnace, which blows hot air throughout the home and provides a very dry heat similar to that of a woodstove. I do have a whole house humidifier attached to the furnace, but I discovered recently that it is not working and had to order a part to fix it. Well, I think I could definitely use a little bit of extra humidity for all my plants, I think that my biggest issue is overwatering when the plants arenât really getting enough light to use all the water fast enough, most of my plants need to dry out quite thoroughly before the next watering. Maybe this is similar to whatâs happening in your home.
@AloesAndElves whenever I use my French press, I seem to forget to drink the last cup of coffee before it gets cold. In the summer and spring, I take the extra coffee and coffee grounds from the French press and dump it on my hydrangea bushes at the base of the plants. But itâs too cold for that right now lol. I actually donât know how frequently I should be adding coffee to the water. So I think at this point I will use it around once a month as to not over fertilize during the winter months.
@AloesAndElves and I wanted to say that aloe and elves is such a cute name!
@nellz4estfairyz ooh double thank you!! I love aloes & the magical world ðððž but yes I neglected the fertilizer once it got cold, my mistake haha. I'm still working on finding that balance! I don't drink coffee myself but my hubby never finishes the pot he makes, I shall start collecting! ðŦĄðŦĄðŦĄ
@Plantpeach it's okay my dragon's breath palm is not happy keeps getting yellow frongs. I don't know if she's losing then to grow for spring or temperature. The light on her keeps her warm. My aloe vera is hanging in there and just being weird under the grow light. My succulents are all happy which surprises me. I'm in Oregon and it's freaking cold where I live, as well dark. The house has poor lighting so my grow light has been a miracle worker so far.
@RadiantGinseng Lol don't even get me started on my Aloes! ð I'm just ignoring them and hoping they make it through ð
@AloesAndElves Oh my gosh I never even considered the nutrient levels this is such a good suggestion. All my pothos I already keep in the bathroom and my house has surprisingly high humidity anyways around 70% (Probably from all the bloody plants ð) so I think humidity wise I should be okay.
Do you have any suggestions on the best way to check nutrient levels?

You can buy soil testers on amazon- just make sure you read reviews first. I wouldn't recommend those digital ones you stick in the soil- those are expensive and garbage. Otherwise it's just trial and error! Different deficiencies have different symptoms. For example if you have an iron deficiency, you may see the young leaves turn yellow first, where as a nitrogen deficiency will be as I described above, starting with yellow edges on the older leaves, from the bottom up! Trial and error is the most cost friendly in this situation, because you won't harm your plant by giving it a little nutrient boost & if the symptoms come to a hault, you know what the issue was ð
@PlantPeach I think @AloesAndElves has nailed it. Two of my seven Pothos have been going through this same yellowing of the leaves. My humidity is on average 60-70%. Therefore, mine wasnât a humidity issue. I have humidifiers doing their job. What I did notice was the roots of my plants were bundled up at the bottom of the pot and protruding out. They were not so much surrounding the pot at the sides, but at the bottom. It is winter here. So I was hesitant to repot them. I gave in and recently repotted them. I believe they are doing better. Pothos do not like being root bound. I do agree with everyone on the humidity needing to be higher so go ahead and get a humidifier but also check for crowed roots. ïŋž
@Arid_oasis they absolutely hate being root bound in my experience! everyone talking about how pothos are so low maintenance, yet they are such drama queens! ð
@AloesAndElves @Arid_oasis
I will definitely check the roots cos they are still in small pots as they are still only baby plants. I was waiting until March time to repot as I'm UK and it's winter here, but if they are root bound then hopefully they will cope okay with a repot at this time of year.
And great ð drama queens, that's just what I need when I have 6 of them all still baby plants ð

@AloesAndElves they are drama queens indeed! Both of my large variegated pothos (N Joy and Marble Queen) just keeled over after a late fall repotting. I havenât even been successful propagating the healthy vines. Others have been losing leaves â Iâll check for deficiency based on this thread.
@PlantPeach repot whenever you'd like! Especially if you supplement with grow lights, pothos won't take a break! Prune, prop, & repot whenever necessary ((:
@captainstardust throw some worm casting in with your soil for a good boost! & with your propegations, i've had the best luck with water propping!
@AloesAndElves Thank youu, I will definitely give this a try
My golden pothos I got as a gift few months ago has been the biggest battle ever that I just snipped back a lot of it and now im growing it in water. Maybe you can cut a lot of yours back and start fresh. I know mine is still alive cause itâs growing roots and I just could never find the right balance with these guys they hate me
@plantpeach
Hi Emily ð
Are you the person who was asking how to create a plant journal on Greg for your plants ?
If so, the answer was posted today by @princesspitstop. It's spot on and easy to navigate. Please check it out. You'll love it.

@CutePolypremum Hi ð, Thanks I did see the post earlier, however it wasn't me who wanting to know how to create a plant journal.
I did ask the other day about having a specific section in the Greg app to store all our posts in one place. This might be what you saw as it's a very similar question ðð

Hi guys! ðĪ ðĪ
Decaff or an extremely delicious organically grown Brazilian coffee...using fresh ground beans, distilled water. Brewed slowly in an upscale coffee maker, which is always cleaned using a little liquid soap mixed with white vinegar?
You can tell I'm a coffee addict and gormand. Will my Golden Pathos and Christmas Cactus love it as much as I do?
Could you suggest other plants as well that might enjoy a little Joe? ðð

Oh...no worries. I just read all of your answers and suggestions where you mentioned other plants that might appreciate a little coffee in their diet.
As you suggested, will check out the rest with our pal, Google.
Thanks for all of your awesome advice!

Wow...my Golden Pathos has grown beautifully and has been very healthy since I first brought her home into our plant family in early March. Knock on wood, of course! ðĪð
So, I checked the bottom of her pot the last couple of times she's been watered and have noticed tiny roots coming slightly out of her drain holes. I hate to upset her by repotting. She's doing so well and growing so much!
What's your advice?

@CutePolypremum that is actually pretty normal! Roots like to poke out to say hello sometimes, it doesnt mean she's root bound! If she's happy you can leave her be for now! If she's maintains happiness until spring you can wait for a repot ð
