@StarryKentia @RefinedSandwort I almost thought it was a bloom getting ready to open but nope! Just a perfect little miniature leaf! Not sure what I expected but it wasn't that. π€£
That's so precious @princesspitstop! I wonder why the new growth on mine is dark purple? Thought it was supposed to be purple till I saw this little cutie.
@FairyFly are you sure those aren't blooms you're getting?? My blooms started out little dots of color!
@FairyFly take a picture I wanna see π
Oh for sure @princesspitstop, the little guy started to grow a bud but, it dropped, they're finicky when they're budding in my experience so far lol.
@princesspitstop I got a segment prop from my son last mother's day. The purple is the growth so far.
@FairyFly wow I don't know! Maybe your plant is a different species of holiday cactus. I don't have a lot of experience with them. It's my first plant and I just got it last month. Have you seen the mother plant it came off of? Yes they are extremely finicky. You see I named mine Drama lol
@FairyFly What I found online...Thanksgiving cactus leaves turn purple due to stress, which can be caused by a number of factors, including:
Too much sunlight: When exposed to too much direct sunlight, the plant produces anthocyanins, which are UV protective pigments that give the plant a purple color. To fix this, move the plant to a location with less direct sun.
Extreme temperatures: Avoid placing the plant near a heater, fan, drafty window, or door.

Haha @princesspitstop, perfect name. The purple is a stress response I'm told. Nothing to worry about. π
You type too fast @princesspitstop lol.
@FairyFly ok good!! Yeah I just looked it up thinking it was a different type of something. βΊοΈπ
@FairyFly Thank God we don't turn purple because of stress haha there'd be a bunch of purple folk walking around here. Ha!
@FairyFly π€£ Talk to text and cut and paste π€£π€£π€£
Never know @princesspitstop, might make social interaction much easier lol.
@FairyFly No kidding but then all the purple people will be discriminated against for not being able to "handle their stress" UGH you know how judgemental people can be. π€·ββοΈπ
Freakin adorable @princesspitstop ! π
@princesspitstop youβre so right about that!! Thereβd be a whole other market for the makeup industry. Maybe people would be getting those orange spray tans to try to cancel it out ππ
@LaSiguanaba Hey girl! Right? Happy New year! How was your Holiday?
@BasementForest π€£π€£ Oompa Loompa doompety doo
@princesspitstop Happy New Year! Itβs a looooong story, Heidi. Basically, I got super sick with a bug they have not been able to identify, mainly in the form of a high fever and flu like symptoms. Itβs the sickest Iβve ever been as an adult! This is the first day in over a week and 1/2 when I can actually say I feel well-ish. I hope you had a much better holiday! π
@LaSiguanaba Oh no! How horrible! Did the kiddos get sick as well? π² I'm so glad you're feeling better but dang!! Eh it was alright didn't do much on Christmas Day because we went to visit our son the week before. It's not the same once the kids grow up and family is all over the place. Honestly, I didn't even decorate this year.
@princesspitstop Thatβs the thing, no one else has gotten sick, not even my husband. Itβs weirdβ¦. π½ π
@LaSiguanaba Oh wow! Wild! I am so sorry this happened to you! π Thank God you're on the mend. Take it easy and focus on getting better. If you're anything like me when I get sick I start stressing out about everything that needs to get done and it just makes it that much worse.
@princesspitstop Oh man, this happened right before Christmas and I had not finished shopping! I freaked out! π Plus, I usually make a lot of treats around the holidays and that just didnβt happen. But I was so sick, some of those days are a feverish blur. I probably should have gone to the hospital.
@LaSiguanaba Oh man that's horrible and WHAT!? You didn't?? I don't know why I'm about to get on to you about not going. It takes an act of congress to get me to go to the doctor period! Besides when you're feeling THAT BAD who wants to drag themself out of bed and deal with all that's involved.
@princesspitstop @FairyFly - I now have 5 βThanksgivingβ cactus π΅
The grey pot (3rd pic) was my first one I got Christmas of 23! It has dark pink flowers! I didnβt get it to bloom this Christmas, but itβs giving me a lot of new stem growth! So I wonβt complain!
The first pic - 2in orange pot is my first prop! I did that a couple of months ago and so far itβs giving me one new piece of stem and LOTS of roots!
2nd pic - 4in black pot I got back in October for $2.50! Can you believe that?! Well when I got home, I noticed a bunch that was broken, but laying in the pot! Instead of throwing them away, I propped it and it just gave me a little dark pink flower π₯°
Then I got a big girl! Sheβs in a 6in pot and giving me flowers almost daily right now! Look how pretty they are ππ
Is it just me or do you all think the flowers look similar to hummingbirds?! π€ποΈπ€
Congratulations to both of you on the new little stem growth! They are FREAKING ADORABLE β€οΈβ€οΈ

@princesspitstop - This is all of the broken pieces I propped! The flower only lasted one day, but at least the buds arenβt falling off!! YAYYY π₯°
@SteffyHazPlants Now I can't stop singing that song! Toe beans, Toe beans, Toe beans, TOE BEANS (in the melody of Joline) π€£π€£π€£
@JenniferNoel YES!! Look at all your babies!! Good job! $2.50!! Seriously? I LOVE a deal!! How did you prop? Just straight in a pot with soil? I've always thought that was amazing how God made it so easy for plants to replicate themselves! No human involvement at all! Blows my mind! You're right, they do look like hummingbirds! I was thinking Geese lol
So it's not just mine @princesspitstop lol, it's normal.
@FairyFly Yeah I guess it is! The first picture of the green leaf, that plant has been here longer so I guess it's had time to get familiar with its surroundings. The purple guy I haven't had as long so maybe that's the deal. He hasn't calmed down yet.
@princesspitstop my blooms fell off just b4 Christmas and itβs not blooming anymore. Hopefully π€π½ soon
@grateful_68 Did it happen not long after you brought it home?
@princesspitstop yes shortly after I got it home the blooms started to fall
@clairsheart Most definitely! βΊοΈπππ
@grateful_68 It seems to be a trend and normal. They are very sensitive and are acclimating to its new surroundings.
@FairyFly I was wrong it is stress related but it's due to too much light! The more you know right? π I'm going to move mine now.
@princesspitstop thank you Heidi. When do they bloom again?
@grateful_68 Thanksgiving Cactus bloom from mid November to late December sometimes January π So maybe not until next year.
@JenniferNoel
Hi Jennifer!
Beautiful plants!
My Thanksgiving cactus has a little purple on the ends of a few of the leaves.
Does that mean anything I should be concerned about?
He is close to the grow light.
I have read that these guys need a lot of light, not much fertilizer, and need to dry out before watering again.
Would really appreciate your advice π€

@CutePolypremum - Hello Joanie β€οΈβ€οΈ
Thank you sweet lady π₯°
The purple is the plant telling you itβs getting too much light! So personally if I were you, Iβd move it away from the grow light and put it in front of a window! If you can! Natural light is their best light source!
As far as watering, the soil is suppose to stay moist when blooming! Otherwise it can dry out in between!
I use rain water, peroxide, and we the wild on mine every watering!! So they all get a small amount of fertilizer!!
All 5 of mine sit right in front of a window! Minus the one I just propped! That one is still growing roots so I have it on the stove with the range light on 24-7!!!
Thank you sweet lady π₯°

@CutePolypremum and @JenniferNoel I also have a little purple on the ends of mine as well. It is a "new to me" plant but not on the other I have that's older. I've read that it's stress related. If your Thanksgiving Cactus is new it might just need some time getting used to its surroundings. If you've had the plant for a while it could also mean that it's getting too much sun and it's suggested to move it back a bit from the window. I've attached what I found on the subject as well as my other leaf that came out purple on my newer plant. I have both plants right next to each other. One has it the other doesn't. Weird right?
@CutePolypremum @JenniferNoel I moved it back from the window anyway lol it stresses me out that it's stressed out! I'm now turning purple ππ€£
@JenniferNoel @princesspitstop
Howdy gals!
That cracked me up. I'm growing natural purple fingernails π³π
Unfortunately, my apartment is so small that I only have one-half of a window. It's facing north and the sill is tiny and right against the window. In addition, my Thanksgiving cactus is large and wouldn't fit. When we get frigid weather, that window actually freezes, so, natural lighting is not possible.
Hey! That's more than 3 strikes. Not fair π
Come to think of it, lifetimes ago, I had one and used to put it under the kitchen sink, which was dark, and leave it for about 3 weeks. It fully bloomed about 10 days after it was "freed"!
What do you think of moving him to the furthest outer corner of the grow light and start top watering, without moving the poor fellow? I usually drag him to the sink, water, and then drip dry.
Also, he's growing like crazy!
You both are sweet, awesome ladies and I'm enjoying the both of you β¨ποΈπ
Thanks!

@CutePolypremum Awe thanks π You're right, that isn't fair but us plant parents make it work! I'm pretty sure you only start introducing the cactus to 12 hour darker days in late September early October to encourage a holiday blooms. Giving it at least 12 hours of darkness per day. All the other days of the year they need at least 12 hours of bright Indirect light per day. In your case 12 hours under a grow light. Most houseplants thrive on a 12-hour light cycle, similar to the natural day/night cycle.
@CutePolypremum let me sum that up by saying I've never actually done it. Kalanchoe's are supposed to work the same way. I have one that's FINALLY blooming thought it was odd that winter was it's blooming season but here we are LoL it must be difficult for you to have plants with a little frozen window π I'm so sad for you. You make it work πͺ that's dedication!!
@princesspitstop
My plants were all babies when I got them last March!
They were all huddled around that little window and my tall "cat condo"...
When I put them under grow lights in the early fall, started using distilled water, humidifier, and We the Wild products...they themselves went WILD!!!
Thanks my plantie buddies. I love all 14 of you.
And... Thanks Heidi! π€
