I keep a chopstick handy and use it frequently to aerate my soil. You donβt want your watering to find βthe express laneβ which is the fastest route to those holes in the bottom. You want the water to make contact with all of the soil before leaving through the bottom. @TwistedThreads @Sassylimey @NewGrowth
Sansi grow lights have my plants thriving through the winter. I have a few, but my favorite is their 36watt grow light bulb that you can put into most lamps you may already have. I love that this strong bulb does not get hot to the touch. #HappyPlants
@Captjo I love the chopstick tip! That's great!
I'm so happy to be a part of this community. My go to items are neem oil and cinnamon it feels like they solve all my issues lol also egg shells make a GREAT slow release fertilizer β€οΈ when growing avocados the water method makes it hard for them to adapt to soil (I'm sure you already know this) but when the roots start growing, plant them directly into soil. Avocados are sensitive babies. Try not to disturb their roots.

#happyplants #plantsmakepeoplehappy
Ok hereβs my (unintentionally inappropriate) tip - #whenindoubt #whipitout β¦ of the pot that is. π a plantβs root system tells us a lot about its health. So if something weird is going on or the plant suddenly looks unhappy, pull it out of its pot and look at the roots! π±βοΈβ€οΈ
@Captjo @sarahsalith I live across the Big Wet so Iβm not entering but I have smaller delicate carnivores so I use slightly blunted skewers. I run the sharp tip across the concrete a couple times to sand off the point and then itβs the same principle, I prefer it to chopsticks for all my plants really even though you have to add more overall holes for larger plants π
Iβm a semi hydro grower myself and use leca as my medium so Iβll give some tips on that! Always wash your leca (outside - never down the drain!) until it runs clear (dirty leca = dead plants) and then boil it 2x for 10 mins (rinsing in between - sanitized leca = happy plants without disease). Finally I LOVE my self watering pots from Amazon that have an outer shell with the pot nestled inside as it helps keep up the humidity and they have great drainage! Finally make sure that leca stays rinsed off to keep fertilizer salts from building up, and use liquid fertilizer for every watering! I like flora grow products. Oh! And keep those roots above your water line!
Bottom watering is definitely my preferred method! It keeps away the gnats and it has saved my succs! #PlantsMakePeopleHappy #HappyPlants #PlantAddict #SucculentLove #PestControl
@soupycare avocados ARE sensitive! π I'm on my fifth and sixth ones!
@stryker49 pot type is SO important!! It's amazing how often I notice plants in the wrong pots. π€ͺ
@megamomma Julie, you HAVE been around for a long time! Back when the usernames were user18363382 π

@megamomma welcome Julie!
Where is @AwesomePlants and @ManyLime and @OKIEgrnthmb and @WickedValkyrie
Best tip from me is clear pots! Not only can you check if it needs watering at a glance but you also get to watch your roots grow and see if theyβre happy! You will see if the soil is compacted or if you need a repot. The benefits are unbelievable, please grab yourself a clear pot or two and test it on your problem plants π
I have been summoned!
@RJG @sarahsalith I always keep a (one gallon) jug of this mixture around... I use it for dunking new plants/plants I bring in from outside and I also keep a spray bottle full for treating bug/fungus issues and an old shampoo bottle with a pump full for using as a leaf cleaner/shine.
I also make sure to always have rubbing alcohol and peroxide on hand. You never know when you might need something a little more serious. Lol π«Ά

@selphietrabia whoa this is really smart. I've used the egg containers but the actual egg shell is so interesting π²π€π€
@RJG if you use the actual egg shell, you don't even need to remove it when transplanting. Just transplant egg and all and the roots will eat the eggshell. Great source of calcium for the plant and a good nutrient boost.
Light intensity drops dramatically indoors just 1m from a window! What looks bright to us on the other side of a room is not for a plant and is considered low light. Plants do best indoors within the 1m range, so try to keep them within this range. π
@HoyaAddict @Gordo what's your tips?!
@HoyaAddict @Gordo what's your tips?!
@HoyaAddict where do you get your clear pots, any specific brand youβd recommend?
@foliagegirl My tips is a few above yours π«Ά
@SophieN Orchid pots or anti swirl, doesnβt matter really! Iβve bought them cheap on eBay from china and Iβm super happy haha.
My most useful items are: a hand lens to look for any parasites, fungal issues etc, a humidifier, and a light meter. Because human eyes adjust constantly to make the best of any available light, it is hard to judge with the naked eye what really is 'Bright Indirect Light' which so many plants apparently need. I was shocked to find that areas I thought were bright had measurements of around 30 foot-candles, and the plant would need around 200 foot-candles to actually grow. Oh and also rain water! I find my plants like it a lot better than tap water. ππͺ΄
My tips would be to ensure you plant is getting adequate lights and always check the soil before watering to ensure that youβre not watering it before itβs ready. I also switched to happyhappyhouseplant fertilizer which has been a game changer and in the past 4 months there is so much new growth! I try to treat each plant like a puzzle and figure out what they need if I see yellow leaves or other signs of distress!
My favorite tip for healthy and clean-looking leaves on your plants is to use a microfiber towel and lukewarm water to remove any dust or dirt accumulation. The best time to do this is when your plant isn't receiving much sun (cloudy days or in the shade). This has left me with beautiful-looking leaves #happyplants
Propagating string of pearls: Bring that soil level up to the very top of the pot. I find pearls thrive this way. Also lots of drainage/airflow helps too. They like to have their soil dry out quickly but they also like water.
I also find rooting in water much easier with these guys. Just pluck a few pearls off the bottom of the stem and stick in water. Then plant as stated above.

Calatheas have become my jam since Iβve figured out what keeps them happy in my super dry house: pebble trays, mini humidifier, and I only water them via bottom watering (my plant protege calls it plant butt bath) with #pothoswater only. And they are so happy!
This is my holy grail plant magic thing. Random Amazon find, gentle enough to use with every watering (tho I usually use it every other) and it has my plants doing so well. Both my calatheas are pushing out new growth, my older peace lily has started to bounce back from root rot (like I went from a full 10 inch pot to one little 3 leaf spray), and my tricolor peperomia is pushing out new leaves like mad despite it still being "winter" and them being slow growers supposedly
@HoyaAddict I only saw a post about clear pots today- they are SO COOL!
@SophieN I TOTALY agree! In my picture, you can see my #HappyHappyHouseplantFood and a syringe! I find it easier to fill up the medicine syringe and have the right amount ready quickly when I'm in a watering mood. π
2 tips I learned from my fellow #Greggers @sarahsalith taught me the value in using a bamboo skewer to check to see if a plant really needs to be watered (also works to aerate the soil!); and @TwistedThreads introduced me to Happy Happy Houseplant food. I use it with every watering now and my plants are growing new leaves like crazy!
On my own, Iβd say while Greg is good at providing cues a plant is ready to be watered, when I make my rounds I stick a bamboo stick or my finger in almost every plant to see if they need to be watered. Last, I have started using clear plastic nursery pots to keep a better eye on the roots, especially newly rooted props!!

@sarahsalith syringe is such a clever idea! I might steal that one , esp with growing season coming up!!
Oh! This is hard. But I'll go with the "top tip" I give new plant parents.
How to not Over-Water: AKA The #1 Plant Un-Aliver.
Learn the signs of when your plant is thirsty over EVERYTHING else. Don't trust Greg (sorry....) Don't trust ya mama. Don't trust google.
How to do that:
Pick up your pots regularly. Feel how heavy it is, notice how heavy it is when freshly watered vs fully dry. Feel the leaves, feel how firm they are when freshly watered vs fully dry. Stick a finger in the soil and see how wet or dry it is. The better you know your plant, the better you'll be able to "read" it.
Leaves will go limp when the soil is completely dry and the plant starts using the water in its tissues (stems/leaves) before finally kicking the bucket. I don't suggest letting your plants get this dry too often (although I'm a firm believer in doing it every few waterings, let it dry a few days longer. I typically see a growth boost after doing so.) Although if they do, most plants will bounce back quickly with a thorough soaking.
I've had houseplants in my home regularly since I was a teenager and I'm near 40. The one thing I STILL do is use a clean and dry wooden skewer to test the soil. Wet dirt will stick to the dry wood. Stick the skewer all the way to the bottom of the pot, put your finger where the top of the soil is, then pull it back out. You'll be able to clearly see how much of the soil is still damp vs dry. If it comes out clean, then like baking a cake, it's done. Give it a thorough watering.
Note: This is if you are using most common soils and mixes. This is not as accurate of a measure if using a low organic matter/soil mix, extra chunky mix, or other growing medium.

@MadforPlants, if I can add to your post: microfiber or cotton GLOVES!! I've used them to easily clean plants leaves. (:
My #TipsandTricks would be to invest in a little $20 grow light from Amazon. It had made such a huge difference this winter for my babies. Also thank you so much for this opportunity! Good luck to everyone! π€
@jaysjungle Totally agree with watching your plants! They will tell you most of the time!
I agree with @Hilly99. I bottom water my Mezoo Trailing Red succulents as well as top watering. I have never experienced gnats on any of my plants over the years. I have delt with mealy bugs on a petunia plant I had last year. It did not survive. Speaking of plant diseases, I recommend Captain Jackβs Copper Fungicide for plants with fungal diseases. This has worked really well for my hydrangea bushes, when they had some issues.
I normally keep my succulents in my North-facing, sunny family-room window with 6-8 hours of sunlight per day. My other plants are outdoors and they receive the same amount of light as well.

@selphietrabia yeah exactly why it's so smart! Thanks for sharing.
Welcome @RedheadKat !
Aquarium water mixed with pothos water for watering my plants. I read about the fish tank water in a group Iβm in and thought Iβd try it. Along with proper lighting and grouping to create humidity, they are loving the combo water! Also, for fungus gnats, I invested in some small carnivorous plants. Those little pings really do their jobs!!!

@MissBrittney π€¦πΏββοΈ I was on a mass tagging kick so everyone enters! Thanks for entering! π
My favorite time of the week is when I put on a movie and go around to all of my houseplants with a bowl of neem oil, or captain jacks, etc and use a makeup brush to dip into the pest prevention liquid. I then wipe off all the dust thatβs accumulated with the wet makeup brush, while also preventing pests! Two birds with one stone π #TipsandTricks
@RJG Awesome was procrastinating homework due tonight! π€¦πΏββοΈ
@JCPlantProper Hi Janai! I have not seen you on Greg for a long time! I hope you are ok! Are you still the person taking in and keeping the plants and plant parts that are given out for the giveaways? Eventually when it is warmer I have some spider plant babies and croton seeds to send you. I will need advice on sending the babies cause I have never done that before.
Spaghnum moss works amazing for propagating cuttings and rehab plants! I have never had much luck with water, but I do recommend moist spaghnum. I mist mine once a day and will sometimes keep a plastic bag over it for more humidity.
Clear pots are another tip! It allows you to see the roots and also how much moisture is in your pot. It takes the guesswork out of watering! You can buy cheap ones on Amazon or make your own out of clear plastic containers! Just be sure to add drainage holes!!

Good luck everyone!!

When we were married and got our house, my husband and I decided to get a reverse osmosis filter for our kitchen. It takes βeverythingβ out of the water. We use the βgood waterβ to drink and cook with. I had not used it for plants before I really got into Greg last year, but now I do. I am sure they appreciate it, though I have not seen a big difference. Now this may sound contradictory, but in the summer when a lot of my plants are outside, I turn the garden hose on them to water, once a week, and they seem to love it. Besides being easier for me! All of them really thrive outside and hate to return inside, where they have to wait for the next spring to go back out! Poor things! Ha!
#OhioGang Any new Ohio people pleas join! #PainintheWordGang @TruthfulApricot @IndyMary
@sarahsalith you're totally right! I totally forgot to add microfiber and I actually didn't know about cotton gloves- I'll be sure to try those out in the future! Thank you for the additional information!

I don't think it's a tip or trick but I must have my moisture meter! I'm getting better at just feeling my pots(that sounded fresh) but I do double check with my moisture meter or a skewer to make sure I'm not over watering. @LatiTish84

@Propa Iβm going to try that! Thanks!
@WickedValkyrie Is that a 1 gallon container?
@LauraLynne GORGEOUS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I definitely fell in love with grow lights for my plants (especially during the winter months since Iβm in Canada!), sticky traps and bottom watering have also been a life saver for me! My first year of plant keeping fungus gnats were the bane of my existenceπ I also recommend moisture meters or the chopstick trick to check how damp my soil isβΊοΈ Iβve also learned that pushing your luck with watering less frequently in the winter for cacti and succulents especially will cause you waaay less painπ
also pots with drainage are a must for me!!
@GrandmaLori Welcome! Donβt worry about the water running out. Thatβs what itβs supposed to do. π
The best thing, though, is to bottom water. Sit your plant pot in a tray of water and let it soak up what it will for 20 minutes or so. Take it out and let it drain thoroughly. Set it back on its saucer, but check back several minutes later to make sure there is no water in the saucer.
You can also repeatedly fill the plantβs saucer with water until the plant wonβt soak up any more. Drain the saucer of any water that it contains. 5 minutes later check and drain the saucers one more time. After that, the plant has every bit of water it needs and if you wait until itβs dry before watering again, itβll love you! β€οΈβ€οΈβ€οΈ

Youβve all missed the ABSOLUTE, TOP, GREATEST, MOST ESSENTIAL tip of all!!!!! (But @SassyHan was SUPER close!) Top Tip: Making use of all of the expert, top-notch, priceless free advice from all of the Greggers here! β€οΈπβ€οΈπβ€οΈπβ€οΈπβ€οΈπβ€οΈ
I don't have a lot of advice to offer, but something I've noticed in recent memory is that while I'm good about not overwatering in general, I still struggle with mammillaria cacti. They seem to me to be reeeeaaally susceptible for me. I waited 5 weeks to give one even a sip and it was rotting by the next morning. The harder, denser mams seem to be less prone than the softer, thicker tubercled species. They're very difficult to just "squish to check," as they're soft all the time and you don't want to break their spines in the process. Do you have the same experience @SirLiquorice? I guess would say, during dormancy period you might not want to water your mams at all.
I'm still quite the noob growing and caring for plants but a trick I learned starting seedlings is to use plastic wrap to create a humid environment without the need of buying actual humidity domes which can be expensive! Don't forget to poke holes in the top or lift the plastic wrap once in a while to allow some airflow!
Bottom watering! I started watering my succulents from the bottom. This helps fully hydrate the soil and prevents water-logging the top layer. No more fungus gnats! Itβs also fun to watch them slowly soak up what they need. I re-use the leftover water on less picky plants to avoid wasting it. #TipsandTricks
@TruthfulApricot it is indeed 1 gallon (:
@Superkma75 did you enter?!π
SUPERthrive is great for helping build and establish a healthy, STRONG root system and is part of my miracle juice that I make for my plants and itβs simple to make. A gallon of water with a tbsp of 3% hydrogen peroxide, a tbsp of epsom salt, your favorite fertilizer at half strength, and of course a couple drops of SUPERthrive! Simple right?! I KNOW! ππ Canβt go wrong with that! As for my shiny leaves I use warm soapy water (just a little bit of soap) and a microfiber towel to gently wipe away the dust and debris, then I use my sprayer to mist the leaves to rinse any soap residue left behind after wiping. I also use my sprayer to mist my plants once or twice a day everyday. Sprayer is from tractor supply if you have one in your area. #TipsandTricks #HappyPlants #oklahomagardeners
Thanks @AwesomePlants! I will now.
My tip for this February #giveaway is get in the habit of using a moisture meter!! Itβs a cheep and easy solution to stop you from over/under watering! When I was young and first started getting into home horticulture, οΏΌI can not even count how many plants Iβve kill by using the βstick your finger in the soilβ method. I used to water Everything (except for cacti) once a week, regardless of what plant type it was. I thought, all plants like a water schedule so Fridays my water day! Itβs was so frustrating and was getting expensive to watch a plant die, not knowing what I was doing wrong. But then I started research more of what each of my plants like. Watering to their needs and the ones I wasnβt sure about, Iβd use my moisture meter before each time I watered. It really changed the game for me. Hope my tip is helpful to anyone else struggling with over or under watering. And as always, good luck! π @AwesomePlants @Keyandre87 @DavidEstrada @JudiciousPeanut @JessDickie @CarrieP4plants @leesgreenhouse @RootedPinay @MelissaF @AC73LoveCats @PlantMom @plantjuice @awilder0814 @Hypsie
@BossChayote Rachel! I've been looking for you! I hope you've been doing well. I wanted to let you know that some of us in the tri-state area are going to plan an outing, hopefully when the weather evens out (this wind is ridiculous!)οΏΌ. π #MidSouthMeetUp is where a few of us are keeping up with each other.
I recently noticed mold on a few of my plants soil, a few different people mentioned spraying with hydrogen peroxide and I got a good fizz and havnt seen any fuzzies since!
I was worried about using it on certain plants but so far all have survived! Yay for not having to repot the whole herd! #TipsandTricks

Also bottom watering my basil plant has been a GAME CHANGER it drinks so much so fast and it really is happier! #TipsandTricks
@Beeps that's genius!
I use chopsticks to repot delicate plant or succulents. I place 2 up and down about inch in . Pull up while spreading them apart. Once out, place the other 2 crisscrossed horizontally all the way through plant. Set gently into prepared new pot. #TipsandTricks
@GrandmaLori welcome to Greg! Sorry your question got buried in this post. So the chopstick is just a way to see how dry your soil is. For example if you typically water a tropical plant when the top soil is dry you can check by sticking a chopstick in it. If the chopstick doesnβt have soil on it the soil is dry if it does then itβs still moist. Water running out when your watering is good that means your deeply watering and the excess is properly draining! If you have any more questions feel free to post β€οΈ
My all-time favorite tips & tricks I love to tell people is how to clean their leaves! NO NEED FOR MAYO or all these fancy chemicals to get shiny, clean leaves!
In a 16oz spray bottle, I mix a pump of dish soap, a squirt of isopropyl alcohol (no more than 70%), a squirt or two of Natria and fill the rest with water.
I shake vigorously and with a soft microfiber cloth, I gently wipe my plantsβ leaves! Not only are you generally cleaning, but you also get a chance to see your leaves up close! Perfect opportunity to do a quick pest check/wellness check ππͺ΄ππ½

@EducatedBeech I just reported a string of hearts and buried the nodes in soil! Lol! Wish I wouldβve seen this before hand!
@gAnderson I especially love bottom watering my echeveria because that way the foliage doesnβt get wet! Also distilled water is your plantsβ (particularly calatheas) best friend.
@FreshWidow i do just use tap buuuut it sits for at least 24 hrs or more to evaporate!
That's smart, @gAnderson οΏΌ
I keep fish tank, chemicals on hand also! I figure if it's safe for fish, it's safe for my plants! οΏΌ

Stay tuned for #GregGiveawayWinners! We'll announce three lucky winners this afternoon!!
@sarahsalith hmmm....smart. i mite hafta borrow idea an try out. U ben using awhile or just start trying?
@gAnderson I've been using it for years. Especially if I don't have the patience to wait for the chemicals to evaporate.
@Stall54Jo nice!! AND inexpensive!!
Some of those succulent watering bottles are NOT cheap.

@sarahsalith awesome to kno!!! That way i can prep more up in advance to have ready to go!!! Thk u!
@sarahsalith now I gotta look up clear pots!! π
@WickedValkyrie hey I saw you posted your formula you use for pests and leaf shining. I am new to all of this and was wondering when you are treating for pests do you wipe it off after you spray it all over, or do you just soak the leaves and let them dry in their own? Thanks for any information you can provide me!
@ErinRose depends on the pest but usually I thoroughly spray the plant and then let it dry. Depending on the weather/how humid it is that day I might also put in near a fan to help it dry faster. And if I'm using it on a succulent, I'll let it sit for a few minutes and then dry the succulent off with a qtip or something cuz they're more prone to rot than foliage plants. (:
As a leaf shine, I pump (I put it in an old shampoo bottle) it onto a piece of paper towel or soft cloth and wipe the leaves down (front and back). You can also just spray the leaves then wipe if you don't have a pump bottle around. Just make sure you shake vigorously before you use it. It separates over time. (:

@PinkWater could you send an Amazon link? Iβm interested in the self-watering pots. Thank you!
