Good morning☕️🌞to #TheThread WAKE UP🥱 Sleepy heads! Yo...

Good morning☕️🌞to #TheThread
WAKE UP🥱 Sleepy heads! Your missing the WEEKEND😱! Ive been up a couple hours drinking coffee on the porch. Its a littlke breezy for the fire but thats ok since its 69 degrees out this morning😍. Ive really just spent it googling and googling and goigling some MORE! About whats going on with these hoyas😤. When i went to bed last night my plan was start repotting all of the ones that are a year or less old this morning. But after sleeping in it and more research this morning i think ive decided that ill just repot the 4" ones but anything bigger im going to try giving a couple good flushes of clean tap water. So now the science/ thinking.... i started using distilled water for my hoyas about the time this happened. I dont think it was the water but my watering habits being a factor in this. When i started using distilled water i also started bottom watering plants to conserve water since it can be costly. That also meant that i wasnt changing my water each time i put new plants into the tub of distilled water. I actually did question this habit especially at first cause the water did get really dark and brown fast! Long story i know but basically i think ive got salt and mineral build up causing nutrient lockout. Ofc repotting is prob the best option and then i can just soak and flush all this old media for reuse. But thats alot of work if i do the bigger pots. 4" pots are super easy and fast with small roots easy to clean off etc. Bigger plants not so much🤷‍♂️! Ramble ramble😂😂 i know. Anyway ill keep you all posted ofc👍.

I loved ALL the great pics from yesterday😍. There were some great finds and awesome looking plants in there 🙌!

NOOB MISTAKE😂 i saved the pics to my ipad but typed this on my phone!😤 guess your going to get some reference pics this morning and ill add our #TheThread photos from yesteday to the tags. SORRY GUYS🙏
have a great day and STAY SAFE🥰!

From what ive read the optium ph water to flush with is 5.5-6 i dont think my tap waters that low but it said to use ph up@or down in the water to get it right. Also why its best to not use distilled since its 7ph. And its just a waste of alot of distilled if your going to add chemicals to adjust the ph of it.
More salts and minerals will break down and flush out with the lower ph water than a nuetral or high ph water i guess 🤷‍♂️
So many factors changed at 1x with these hoyas. Lighting water humidity media! Everything tbh! They went from flourescent grow lights in fluval to chunky media in my new tent under led lighting. Then i got the distiller a month later so water changed and humidity to. And even day and night temps. But i feel lije ive been patient waiting for them to acimate too! So now im just 🤯 maybe a bit in panic mode.
This was so helpful! Thank you so much!
Hello everyone! Exams are starting and man i CAN wait!

Anyways, i found this plant, but i dunno what it is? Kinda like a Tradescantia pallida, but the flowers [a deep indigo-violet] look more like a miniature Blue Passionflower. Anyone know what it is?
Hey ho, quick shoutout to all the nice people yesterday. I keep getting great news rg the fusarium, the longer I research. Apparently I shouldn't be angry with myself for not disinfecting the prop box more thoroughly with isoprop before using it. Did you know that according to some studies, isopropyl no matter how efficient against fungi themselves isn't sporicidal (which was the main problem with the box?) Other studies say the opposite, so who am I to despair (I wiped my tools only with IPA, because I thought it was the strongest biocide I had). I guess this will be a research day. Maybe. Maybe I'll do a quick run to my "home depot" to see if they also carry HP, preferably in gallons (my pharmacy is closed for the weekend already).
Hoya flushing madness 😱
Just a few oddball size ones left that i coukdnt do in groups of 6
5 gallons of fresh water after each soak with 6 pots
@MusicalRedmint why not use bleach to disinfect then clean with water
Bleach kills mold so it must kill spores
Thats my basic regimen anyway tbh when im cleaning things that arent porous for plants. Bleach cleaner then soapy water then hot water rinse 🤷‍♂️
Porous i use clr but i dont know if that kills bacteria.
@TheConservator because I really really really don't want to put my dog and I through that and I don't have the energy. I would have to go buy some, use way more precautious regarding dog, ventilation etc. I do still have a good enough amount of HP and that is a very effective fungicide (and to a degree sporicide) as well. I was just planning to use that for treating the soil. I do have a way more effective HP based fungicide as well, but again, more aggressive, more prevention needed, fumes potentially damaging all the spiking, budding, blooming orchids, unless I carry them around.
It's not great but I will manage somehow, but the main problem was, me disinfecting everything with IPA *before* I got that particular tidbit.
Almost disinfected all the prop pots after immense amounts of efforts of discarding soil, decontaminating the pros themselves, etc. with IPA as well (don't have enough small ones until next week). Which would have made *all* of my efforts worth nothing.
My main concern seldom is bacterial growth. Nothing better against that than IPA in my mind. Relatively cheap and safe and multipurpose. Which is why I Alastair use it for my tools as well. I guess I'll just have a little dance of happiness that I've researched a bit more today and don't rely on it exclusively *after I cut directly into f-ing fusarium* grmbl.
Problem is, tomorrow everything is closed, so I'll have to wait until Monday if I need more. And even then, I can only order it and still have to wait (unless I buy a bottle of a size that would barely be enough to spray down 5 plants). No matter. For now I need to get going again. If I continue to rest and chat, I don't have to worry about missing cleaners at all.
I just... am not very motivated rn, I guess. It's a lot. Especially because at this point I don't even know if there *is* a real issue. Or conversely, if I'm even using the correct approach, if there is a big issue. I hate not knowing
Also, Mr Sleepy used my timeout to first just full body-contact press beside me and now it's lying sprawled all over my chest and belly, sooo... I guess I'm not getting up now. Seems the more appealing option anyway😉
Hey yall good morning. Didn’t sleep well, felt a lot of pain like a crotchety old lady, but got to stay in bed a bit and snuggle with the cat! Headed to Natural Bridge Caverns today, we’ve never been and it should be really cool! Then getting shots later today. So it’ll be a busy, out and about kind of day. Tomorrow I have a ton of propping and planting to do, going to do one more small purge next weekend I think.
Have fun with the fam🙌 @RealSimpleMama
Got my new mix hitting 6.1- 6.7 testing a bunch of depths and locals🙌
@Araceae there you are! Been thinking you must be very busy with studies.
@RealSimpleMama have so much fun at Natural Bridge Caverns. ❤️
I actually think it will go up to 6.5-7 after a few more hrs. Let these last amendments cook togethor some
Good morning planty people 🫶🌿 @TheConservator #TheThread It’s 7am and I’m getting ready to go be a friendly neighborhood brunch server. (Which, at my job, is not hard to do, I love all my coworkers/owners, and I love all our regulars which makes up probably 90% of our business, lol. )

I got a soldering iron yesterday and burned a ton of holes into nursery pots. SO FUN. I also transferred a handful of plants into their new breathable pots, á la carefully holding the plant upside down, sliding old pot off and new pot on like a magician!! I got a Calathea cocinna‘Freddie’ yesterday and a Micans at the nursery.

Have a good day everyone! 🌧️ ☀️
@TheConservator Gooood Morniing 🪴🐥 #TheThread
Slept until 8:15 🤯 wish I could do that more often ❗️
Tks for including my new terrarium in lineup today. 😀
Fun fact: I don’t own a little sprayer/mister. Quite sure I used to … @MariansOasis 😍🤩 Hoya 😍🤩 stunning! @Prentyce your styling skills are 💯🤩 and your linearis looks awesome! 😍 @TheOddAsity more 👁️ 🍬 she’s running! @DreamMachine is that a bromeliad? My old eyes can’t see squat of little phone pics.
Good morning all!! Lots of plants to care for today. And must remedy a staghorn fern repotting gone haywire 😬🙈. Once I cut him out of the plastic pot I discovered the vanda basket isn’t deep enough. 😫 And that they get wider not deeper as you go up in size. Local nursery doesn’t have any alternatives so I put him into a plastic pot again until I can figure out what to do. 🤔 💭 😩. And doesn’t that Corningware dish take you back! 🤭😆
@TheConservator I like your reference pics 🙌. Very interesting. I’m super visual so they help a lot!
@DreamMachine these plants look soooo good. 😍
I drill (not burn) extra holes and it’s oddly satisfying 😄
Have a wonderful day spreading sunshine ☀️
@MariansOasis is it mounted?Could you use something like garden netting wrapped around sphagnum and stapled to a board, if you have it? (According to a plant book I read—let me see if I can find it)
@TheConservator can we see the Hoyas in question?!?!😭🤩😭 I think you’re onto something, have you calculated your media ph? Did you want me to send you the link? Idk this is over my head, but if needed haha I can memorize
@SunSoilLove yes!! It’s a cryptanthus ‘Absolute Zero.’ I really want it, but I didn’t get it yet. $40 is more than I’m willing to spend for one plant at the moment, but isn’t it pretty?? 😱
@DreamMachine it’s beautiful and half a tank of gas! ⛽️
@SunSoilLove ooh yes I also drilled sons holes before I got the soldering iron, so satisfying! Way better than the dinky tip of my plastic compass 🙄
@SunSoilLove 😂😂 yes. Have a wonderful day your self my dear 💕💚
@Prentyce calculated?
@MariansOasis look at net pots. They have deeper ones i bet
@Prentyce its these mainly but otgers keep yellowing leaves and dropping them. Mainly after watering.
@TheConservator yes!! Calculate😭🤩😭 https://unlikelygardener.com/soilless-porosity-calculator/?fbclid=IwVERDUANOEdpleHRuA2FlbQIxMQABHruT5uOsqzylh78W-U4WqO5WBIUetchd4QbbGrGSEGG77wVVeLWyrD55YGL0_aem_YFAQ3alSjlM7abHz4ZAGOQ
Those distorted leaves arent soft like youd think! Theyre really hard
Ive just been doing averages. I take 3-5 readings or more depending on pot and average the numbers to get the actual ph. @Prentyce
Thats pretty cool thank you !🤗 @Prentyce
Ive gotta assume that since i was getting readings from 3.5-8.5 and even drastic differences in 6" pots. That either i didnt get things mixed good enough the last time i made a mix. Or it was that beats the peat possibly not being buffered. Or i just messed up and put to much of sonething in it like lime
Lesson learned! Mix cook mix test! Not mix test use lol
Good morning/brunch/lunch to everyone here on #TheThread !

Watered all my succulents this morning and still have more to go. Another cool moring but love the warmer days.

Here are a few plants . Nothing special but happy to have and enjoy.
@CourtlyKingfern look like pretty nice echeveria to ne🤩 and that ROF is awesome too !
Good morning everyone! Sounds like a busy day for all y’all already. I slept in today which, I rarely can do, so that’s nice. Have a few more plants to deal with that were affected in the move. They’re not happy. Might post pics later to ask people for help/opinions.
@TheConservator since I haven’t been on here regularly, and if it’s not too much trouble… what’s going on with your hoyas that you’re explaining all this process? Are you having issues?
More useless info in all this. Carnosa like low ph5.5-6 publicalyx higher 7-7.5 even. That being said i cant do ph per plant. I think im going for a target range of 6.5-6.7 preferably
@TheOddAsity yes look at those pics up there after @Prentyce
It was a just to much change for me and the plants all at once or i just messed up my last mix baad!
🤷‍♂️ at a loss trying to figure it out! But man did i learn alot on nutrient uptakeand lockout, medi comps , cooking before using , etc etcetc lol
@TheConservator just saw the pics. Ok, can I ask some stupid questions? You haven’t changed sunlight locations have you? When was the last time the roots were checked? Because I just went through this with some of mine too, and I’m happy to offer what I learned.
With the drasticaky different ph im getting im really leaning towards i just screwed up my last mix
@RealSimpleMama Have fun today! I don't feel so bad now knowing that you've lived here most of your life and have never been. It's on my to-do list! That and the Japanese Garden! All I've been to so far is the River Walk and the Alamo. There are so many touristy things in the city and right outside of the city that I haven't explored. Now that the weather is cooling down a bit it will be more pleasurable than in triple digit heat! I'm looking forward to a trip to Rainbow Gardens with you next weekend!! Let me know later in the week if you still plan on going! I'm looking for a string of hearts for one of my pots and want to see if they have any. 🥰
Everything changed!😂 @TheOddAsity floursecent light and fluval to led in a grow tent in chunky mix
But they were still doung ok until i staryed bottom watering cause i bought a distiller
Then alot went downhill and even more just stoped growing altogethor
@CourtlyKingfern Ohh Evelyn! 😮 Your Ponytail Palm is BEAUTIFUL 😍 All that new growth on the top makes me so happy! Have a great weekend!!
Literally getting 3.5- 8.5 ranges lol @TheOddAsity
@TheConservator what are the avg ingredients in your potting mix? I may have some other thoughts that might help give information
I allso had another issue that i potted 6 of the biggest ones in 6" terra cotta pots. Well@the drain holes were tiny and they all got plugged by perlite . Theyd drain but not all the way. Thats why i didnt catch it until i decided to repot and see what was going on. Wet asf! Soggy even! But no rot thankfully. Small terra pots big roots so they survived that ! Lol
Well it a was about 2 parts cocopeat, 1 part coco chunk, 1 part chunky perlite, some castings , pumice, charcoal, myco @TheOddAsity
Which from everything ive found i dont have enough cocopeat or peat or sand. It needs less air space basically for nutrient uptake
Which it is lose trellis wont hardly stand in it
@TheConservator have you always used myco when potting Hoya?
@TheConservator hold please. Lots of thought on this. Gotta type them up 😂
No i actually added it to that mix was my first time
Its been craziness around here tbh 😂 nothings been able to stay in one place long lately
@TheOddAsity damn😱... writing a book over there !?😂😂😂 jk jk im sure you got pulled away! Lol
@TheConservator I did get pulled away! 😂

Ok, I’m gonna talk out loud so you can hear the thought process. First of all, the ingredients you use have an average of 7.0 on the pH scale. Because Hoya are epiphytic, their roots aren’t beefy, and science shows they are not the plant’s primary source for uptake for nutrients, and *my* experience is that myco chokes them. They can’t handle it, and it tends to burn them. They actually need *more* air pockets to be able to breathe, and that’s the reason they need high levels of humidity to absorb through their leaves (I’m in Utah and the lowest it can get in my home is 33% or they struggle).

Now, distilled water is technically 7 pH. BUT, it leeches CO2. It leans toward 5.5. Does it steal the CO2 from the plant, the soil or the air? I dunno. But plants need CO2 for photosynthesis, so could it be a problem if you’re only using this water? Again, I don’t know. Okay, now Hoya themselves need more calcium and magnesium to construct their leaves, and when this is removed it really shows up. And because distilled water has no nutrients and leeches CO2, that combination actually dissolves and removes base ions of calcium, magnesium and potassium.

All yellow leaves, and I mean ALL, show nutrient deficiency. Whether the nutrient is blocked by a fungal or bacterial issue, or lack of air (overwatering), or that the sun dehydrates them and they’re making too much energy, or if it’s root bound there’s not enough available energy… all of those are yellow leaves. So in this case, find your nutrient deficiency. Which I know, is what you’re doing. 😂
@TheOddAsity i just started supplementing with cal mag cause everything i found leaned towards that deficiency and it also cause high ph in coco if those arent present. But after finding so many different ph levels i decided to start this whole process of leaching and flushing pots to start with a somewhat clean slate. Ad i just happened to only have luke 1/2 gallon of that chunky mix left anyway. So i have been working on getting it right this time lol.
@TheOddAsity im still leaning towards cal mag defiecent but the cause im assuming was bottom watering with distilked water
Add in all the otger changes and plugged drain holes! Its just heen nothing growth wise lom
@TheConservator mineral buildup really isn’t possible with distilled water. So I don’t think you need a flush. I think they NEED nutrients.
@TheConservator and as for soil, mine is like this. 5 parts coco chips, 5 parts chunky perlite, 1 part charcoal, 1 part coco coir. It’s chunky and water just runs right through. There’s also no nutrients so I add 1/4 streng fert each watering
I mainly did the flush cause i found a little info saying it could help stabilize thpse drastic ph swings from 1 test and another test on opposite side of the pot
Some pots id check 1 side 7.6 the other side 4.1 lol @TheOddAsity
@TheOddAsity i think id die trying to keep up watering with that mix. Im sure if you can its great
@TheConservator I think that’s normal when using a really chunky mix. It happens to me all the time.
@TheConservator no? I water ever 2 weeks ish.
Everything got flushed this morning. Im letting em dry up just a bit and ill starg checking ph again to see if the swings are any better
Thats also been an issue lol trusting the readings are even right in chunky mix. @TheOddAsity
You can do slurry method but then its not giving you the pucture from one side to other.
@TheOddAsity i juat figured it would dry up pretty fast being so chunky.
Good afternoon just got done setting up for the big event tomorrow . The weather has been cooler so this weekend is welcome at 75 . Tomorrow I gotta do registration all day being the greater and registration table. So glad it will be over tomorrow it’s been a lot of work preparing. I’m still waiting on the Jewel orchid to bloom even though I hear they’re not that special either. @TheConservator Are you transplanting before fall ? And why flush the plants ? You’re starting to sound like Semore who had gorgeous plants as you do . @CourtlyKingfern Loving that money tree you always have such nice shows. All today’s pics are just beautiful. As always thank you Sonny for your dedication to us . Maybe they’ll start paying you to take over all the fallen features we use to have here 🤔 And I also want to tell you I’m sorry for not coming to your defense when that very ignorant statement was made comparing you too paid staff. I just thought best to not feed the fire .
@TheConservator well, perlite has capillary action and stores water in the tiny tunnels. And charcoal holds moisture, so does coco coir. Coco chips hold humidity. So I usually water to the point the drip tray fills up, and usually when I go the rounds I check them again, if no water remains in the drip tray, I add more. And that’s it. I don’t fuss over them.
@TheConservator thanks, flying by the seat of my pants and loving every minute of it. Bahaha 😂
@ILoveMyPlants read my convo right above with @TheOddAsity it explains why im goung through this
@ILoveMyPlants lol no need! It wasnt that big of deal! I just wanted her to see the big difference in me missing and paid staff lol
@ILoveMyPlants but THANK YOU !
@ILoveMyPlants hooe everything goes great tomorrow! Im sure ut will though your well prepared
Lol id say start a petition to get me on greg payroll!🙌😂 no jk jk .. im not convinced gregs making it
@TheOddAsity Hey you nice to see you. Thanks for the great info.
@CourtlyKingfern are you thinking of another job or you done?
@princesspitstop hey hey Heidi! Thank you very much. I am not sure if it’s even possible but as you can see it has several shoots from the main stem. I would like to take them off but not sure if I could actually do something either the cuts or not. Plus I definitely don’t want to harm main plant. Top looks happy not sure about bottom.
@ILoveMyPlants thanks! Good to see you too! Had a lot of life changes and had to step away for a bit!
@TheConservator who knows what I plan to do. 🤷🏼‍♀️
My brain was fried with that last job and I know it will be two yrs in Nov since my husband passed but it’s been a rough bit.

I need to be looking but it’s going to have to be one that does not work my poor screwed up brain at this moment in time.
So you are not getting an answer today.. 😂
@CourtlyKingfern Good question! I'd like to know myself. I'll definitely do some research on it in a bit! I'm working right now but I'll let you know what I find. 😁
@ILoveMyPlants hey 👋 Deb! Good luck with your event tomorrow. Cant wait to see your orchid bloom. I think they are tiny blooms but it means they are happy under your care! 🙌🏻💚
Have a great day!!
@DreamMachine thanks for the thoughts but it’s an indoor plant so I don’t want to mount it. Our walls are dry wall and I’m afraid of mold.
@TheConservator will check out net pots, thanks!
@MariansOasis my round shallow corningware for bottom watering large pots is from the same decade I am! 😆
@RealSimpleMama I feel your pain of not sleeping well due to pain! My left hip and top of left leg ached no matter what position I tried to sleep 🛌 in. Now I’m a crotchety old lady at work. Getting ready to caffeinate soon! At least I did get to attempt to sleep late this AM.
@TheConservator @CourtlyKingfern @princesspitstop Hey guys ashamed to say I didn’t use We The Wild or fertilizer this summer and all my bloomers suffered. I feel back on track now but can I use these products throughout the winter if I have grow lights or just wait till March when everything starts growing ?
@CourtlyKingfern I’m fortunate to be doing registration under a tent 🙌 But gotta collect money for entrance fee. I’m trying to get an outfit to match the vibe. Think I’m doing boho hippy as it works with the spiritual aspect of it all . I’m just so grateful to be of assistance my summer has been pretty home bound and I gotta push . Getting old and the fastest way to get there is sitting in my 💩 . I will say @TheConservator has helped me to realize I’m not alone and a gentle reminder that doing things helps with energy. Thanks for your candidness Sonny you’ve helped me to see what’s going on right now .
@CourtlyKingfern I remembered that next month is tough for you my moms going through same thing . And it doesn’t matter what people say to help because only you are feeling it . Hope you know I’m here if you need an open mind but I know you are blessed with a wonderful family and know that helps.
@ILoveMyPlants id still fertilize 1x a month atleast
Man i had my flurry of get it done this morning, then had lunch and crashed for a nice nap🤗
Gotta get back to it soon though
No prob. Welcome to #TheThread
@TheOddAsity also forgot to mention i went around 2 weeks ago with azomite trace element powder and dosed each plant with that. But its a sliw release powder so doubtful it hurt. Id still assume it will help longterm
I actually think that and the cal mag did make em look just a touch better but if it did it was minor
@CourtlyKingfern @princesspitstop i have already decided that with this disaster going on this weekend that ill take your guys cuttings monday after work and pack em up. Then ill send out tuesday morning 👍. Sorry just to much crap to get done now this weekend. .... DAMN ADHD 😤
Small@chance of rain now tomorrow eve so gotta move cacti and succs up too
@TheConservator I totally understand. Take your time! I'm in no big rush.
@TheConservator same here! I understand as well, and no problem. And no rush. 🙏🏻
@SunSoilLove right!!! And today at Costco I saw the “retro” Tupperware 👀. It’s the style I got as wedding present a kabillion years ago. I don’t use them for food storage anymore but do use them for watering 💦 😆
@TheConservator I got up at 4:30 this morning and piddled around house and then about 10:30 after with no breakfast I made myself some spaghetti I had been craving since late yesterday … I crashed after that as well. And I also split beef & Made taco meat for a salad later on.

Grandson came over and cleaned some of my flower beds out a bit. While I was asleep and then he woke me up.. 🫣. He is a good kid!
@CourtlyKingfern aww that was nice of him🥰 obviuosly loves hos gandma
@MariansOasis lol we had that set as a kid! But then again i think everyone did at one point lol
The 80s are back and im glad i hated 70s fashion! Lol
Its patachute pants jams and lighted boomboxes next in line! Bet i can still do the centipede 🙌😂
Better buy auqanet stock now!
@TheConservator oh please don’t get me started on colors of the old days. When my Mom built our house when I was 8 she had the latest greatest color trend! Avocado color everywhere. 🤢🤮 our hall guest bath was covered in that color TILES!!! 🙄
Master bath had that powder blue colors.

I said long ago if I ever build a house I would have white.. all appliances and bath crap. lol

That’s always available when something breaks. haha
@MariansOasis those will always be the best Tupperwares! All the other stuff can’t compare. 🌟
@TheConservator #TheThread Turned out to be murder death kill the spidey mites on Alocasias day.
Cuprea, Black Velvet don’t seem to get them like frydeks and Polly’s do.
@RefinedSandwort I hope we both sleep better tonight, my friend! Mine is hips and low back
@TheConservator @TheOddAsity Thank you both for the hoya ph/substrate/nutrients discussion! Definitely learned some things and appreciate your wisdom 🙌
@RealSimpleMama I hope the outing was good today! did you all have fun? Hope you sleep better tonight!
@SunSoilLove yeah some alocasua get em bad others not really
@TheConservator yeah, I don’t thinkk it will hurt since it just remineralizes the soil.
@RealSimpleMama yes! This is happening a bit too frequently for me.
