@PlantMompy Hello Rhubarb! π
Those things get so huge!
I'm going to go with the AVOCADO π₯
It is umami, it is creamy, fatty, straight up yummy! π
And, it's good with almost anything, or even just by itself. It is one of the weirdest things you can call a fruit.

@Lunatik4 on the topic of mango, here is a fascinating anecdote: imagine youβve been invited to brunch at Buckingham palace. You are deep conversation, so when fruit bowl arrives you reach blindly reaches for the bowl only to grab a mango. Well do you really want the queen of England to watch you make a mess all over yourself? Sending his anxiety, Prince Phillip says, well Iβll show you. I have read several accounts of this story and the Prince peels the mango as if it were a parlor trick, sparing the guest the indignity of embarrassing himself. The guest was actually an actor the event had such an impact on him it wsd incorporated into an Agatha Christie movie. Inbelejfe it was depicted on the crown too.
Horseradish!!
It looks good, smells great and the bugs and my (beloved) birds mostly leave it alone.
It also grows like a hot damn! I call it my confidence crop. ππ»π

π¬π₯΄ Well now! I do believe I misinterpreted the assignment!
I answered in the spirit of the veggie plant, itself; the growing of it, the beauty of it... not the taste or actual eating of it! Oopsie π»π.
I've been so in love with the joy of growing horseradish it's simply the first thing that sprang to mind π€ππ» with few needs, it quickly fills up my garden with its large, lush leaves. And, wow! Does it smell out of this world fantastic (spicy and dill-like. yummy!)!
Not typically grown for it's leaves, they're certainly edible and extremely nutritious.
They're a source of vitamin C, folate, calcium, magnesium, and potassium, as such, they help bone and muscle health and nerve function.
https://gardeningsoul.com/unlocking-the-power-of-horseradish-leaves-a-dual-guide-to-boosting-wellness-and-culinary-innovation/
The leaves have been used to treat respiratory conditions due to their expectorant properties, helping to clear congestion.
Additionally, the natural compounds found in horseradish leaves may possess antibacterial and antifungal activities, providing a natural means to fight off infections.'
Horseradish is considered a neglected and underutilized species that is also beneficial for improving biodiversity.
In a study published in June 2021 titled:
Horseradish: "A Neglected and Underutilized Plant Species for Improving Human Health", the author is clearly convinced of the importance of horseradish and advocates for marketing campaigns to improve consumption.

@TexanExpat interesting anecdote, John. I know they Agatha Christie wrote the book The Mirror Crackd based on an actual real life even that occurred to the actress Gene Tierney!

This is Cally, my Calamondin tree π and she's just the BEST fruit tree! π She had a hard start in life... Well, life with me! Lol her previous owner went to town with the snips (henceforth known as SPANKERS! @elisenavidad π«£ππ) to the point that I want sure how well she'd recover! But she's been just churning out new growth recently, and she bloomed for me last month (the blooms are GORGEOUS! they're small, almost leathery white flowers with an amazing, heady scent almost like jasmine! But they don't last long π₯°) so she's getting ready to give me FRUIT as well!! What a great girl she is!
I'll have to get @JesssJungle to give me tips on jam/ marmalade making because the fruit are SO bitter! Lmao π€£π€£ I can't think what else to use them for, but they're lovely looking, tiny little yellow orange-like fruit (like a cross between a lemon and a kumquat!!). I'm so proud of her! ππ₯°

@Seymour thank you for sharing that story. I know it was not intended by you but I had to give up my career and probably will have many mental health treatments that fluid have been more effective and helpful but for people donβt to have the issue within bandwidth on a given day. But just having had the stress of medical bills not be an issue for herβ¦I can you she had more peace and at least a better quality of life based on that fact alone. @Seymour I just took a peek at your profile and seeing your an Aussie and have Cyril Figgus among your plants is encouraging Iβll be in touch. I have never taken βhorticultural therapyβs as such but plants as a modality for treatment of various issues is something of an interest in an academic sense for me. Not that Iβm an academic. Favorite Fruit (Berry nice π) is the blueberry π«, considered a π¦Έ superfood and something I canβt get enough of in my life. And itβs good for you so idea for breakfast until the little late supper snack at night ! And I found a record breaking berry which is berry big !
But in case it is not eligible then I go with coriander or what Americans call cilantro! Ever wonder why the different name? @PlantMompy Ashley itβs hard to choose just one butβ¦ I have found a tomato seed called Holy Land tomato!! Wow what a plant and crop it puts out.. and of course my little cherry tomato too, salad to sandwich kinds.. β€οΈππ€©π₯³ I only have two plants this year as my daughter & son-in-law have planted their garden to share this year. Photos of course with the picked tomatoes are from past year! Crazy year for tomato crop for sure. I would pick like 5 - 5 gal buckets at a time!!
@UltraKoreanfir I love how versatile avocados are, too! I feel like I never use them to their full potential π
@Lunatik4 yessss, mango salsa, mango smoothies, mango on my sushi, all the time please!
@TexanExpat can't wait to hear about your naturalist training! It's next on my list π«
@CorvidFan I love the idea of a confidence crop! I'll have to think about what mine might be π€ personally, I'm not a big horseradish person but it's definitely one of my husband's favorite things!
@JenniB81 I've never heard of this tree but automatically LOVE any fruit tree that is willing to grow inside!
@Seymour of COURSE berries count π wasn't it Australia where the record was just set?
@CourtlyKingfern ohhh, I always need new tomato varieties to keep up with my kids' and husband's love for them. I like them, but they are on a whole other level. Definitely adding these to my gardening list!

@PlantMompy Yay for fruit and vegetable month . My garden is all from seed and I have a baby bunny so nothing is as it should be . Iβm going with mint and collard greens . Nothing will be mature enough for picking for a few weeks . Though my mint has filled out nicely . Iβm sure @stillsarrah will have some great stuff to share . ! @Seymour I just read a article on super fruits with high antioxidants to boot ! The blueberries are at the top of the list .
@PlantMompy Ashley, you obviously saw the photo and article in my comment ,πππππ«
@ILoveMyPlants Hey Deb, that doesn't surprise me and i often used frozen blueberries π« from Chile as they are significantly cheaper and I understand they still retain many of the nutrients. Only problem is that they are often sold out so that tells me something ππππ«
@Sassylimey wow, just putting the words curry and mango together makes my mouth salivate like Pavlov's dogs! I also like a mango lassi and i used to have mango pancakes at a Yum Cha place to cleanse the palate after a meal ! Mangos π₯π₯ rule !
@Seymour I love blueberries and usually make me a smoothie in the am to go to work on. Add yogurt sometimes as well. This is a favorite of mine. May not be the best choice but I like it! Add ice and go!! πβ€οΈ
@CourtlyKingfern Hey Evelyn π You seem to be living such a healthy life and i adore smoothies so a few blueberries π« are a lovely addition. If course so many lovely ingredients can be added. I make my own yoghurt at home, in fact i have a yoghurt maker that allows me to make up lovely pots where i can added a few blueberries π« to every little pot. It a lovely little treat and so healthy! Thanks for sharing Evelyn, so zen π«πππππ
MY π
TOMATO GARDEN! My husband and I love tomatoes. My love for them which is second toβ wellβ NOTHING, started with my appropriately nicknamed βTomato Momβ, who grew them in our yard while I was growing up. I have been growing them in my own yard now for 30+ years. I took all these pictures this morning, June 15. Planted the weekend before May 14, the first frost-free date in southern Ohio, zone 6. Second from right is closeup of a tomato flower. Far right is closeup of some of my marigolds, natural enemy of almost all tomato pests, planted encircling the tomato plants. Middle one shows the variety. All 12 are Beefmaster. Anyone interested in plant experimentation can read my following post for the explanation. I will also look for some pictures of the actual fruit in past years @SwiftMedeola #OhioGang #Zone6ers #OutdoorGrowing #TomatoPlant
Well, the first thing I thought of was my mangoes, but clearly those have been covered! π
BEHOLD! My chili pepper seedlings! The original plant was given to me years ago as a Mother's Day present and I have kept it going with the seeds. (: οΏΌ
Today I will be planting the seeds and moving them to the greenhouse.

@AC73LoveCats @SwiftMedeola #OhioGang #Zone6ers #OutdoorGrowing #TomatoPlant Grandson in the middle. He had carted the basketful from the garden to the porch. Couldnβt find that photo. So, here is how I decided to solely use Beefmaster variety. We have a problem in my area with tomato late blight. The marigolds tend to get rid of all other tomato problems for me, but the blight always comes, further in the season and always kills the plants eventually. Some varieties sooner than later. So a few years ago, instead of using a lot of varieties each year, I planted 2 of each of 6 varieties. The outcome was that Beefmaster and one other large fruited variety bested the other four. So the next year I planted six each of those two varieties. Beefmaster won. It wasnβt free of blight, but contracted it later in the season, and it wasnβt as virulent, and by the time it killed the plant the plant was done for the season anyway so we didnβt lose any of the plantβs fruit-producing time. So I always get that variety at my favorite nursery now in the spring. This experiment worked for southwest Ohio but I wouldnβt expect the same results for other regions.
@JCPlantProper lychee!! Those are so weird!! I think they have the consistency of what I imagine eyeballs would be. π
@AC73LoveCats that TOMATO!! DANG!! That almost makes me want to eat a tomato that isn't in a salsa or in the form of ketchup!!
OMG Sarah, why wouldnβt you? Itβs the best food ever. I love salsa as long as itβs not sweet, and canβt stand ketchup (not trying to make any enemies here), but there is nothing like a home grown tomato with a little salt. I emphasize the HOME GROWN. Storebought tomatoes taste like sand. We donβt buy them. @sarahsalith
@AC73LoveCats π I respectfully disagree about the βbest food everβ BUT without tomatoes, the best food EVER wouldnβt exist! πPIZZAπ π
So you bring your tomatoes and Iβll make the bread and bring cheese and pepperoni! Weβll be BFFs in the baking!
So you bring your tomatoes and Iβll make the bread and bring cheese and pepperoni! Weβll be BFFs in the baking!
@ILoveMyPlants I have a over-grown patch with a chicken cage over it (to keep out my egg-givers) but I have yet to attempt to garden. But you and @AC73LoveCats are pushing me to better myself! (That and one of my kiddos, @AdamBomb, is after me to grow our own food π) ONE DAY!!
But with all the changes in my life, it might as well be soon! Iβm not promised tomorrow!

I love this idea! I have to go with sunflowers! Every single part of this plant is edible! From the seeds, to the leaves, to the petals, to the stalks (kinda like celery!), to the roots! Itβs a versatile plant. I love that I can plant my seeds every spring and by July have towering, bright flowers attracting my favorite fuzzy bumblebees and butterflies. This was my tallest one last year, measuring in at over 7β tall! And these are some of my current cropβthe potted ones are about to go in the ground today (normally I would straight sow the seeds into the ground, but this year a little critter went around and dug up/beheaded all my sunflower seedlings, so I had to start more inside and transplant once theyβre big enough). This year I have three varietiesβMammoth, Russian, and Evening Sunβso Iβm really excited to see how they look when they bloom! π»π»π»π»π»π»π» #SunflowerSquad #greggivesback
@BabeVila your sunflowers look AMZING!!
@sarahsalith Thanks so much!! I credit them with getting me into plants! I always loved them for their looks, and successfully growing them made me realize I did not have a black thumb and gave me the confidence to keep adding plants to my garden and eventually keep houseplants. They kinda started it all for me, haha π
My favorite fruit plant so far is my California strawberry. Itβs my favorite because for years I was not good at gardening, but I decided to try again to help relieve some stress and this has been my first plant to work with me and help me through some tough times. @Girlygrenthumb
iβve been walking by this sea grape tree for months! itβs finally fruiting and i canβt wait to try one when theyβre ripe!! itβs a nice little thing to monitor a few times a week while walking to and from the bus stop. iβve found a bunch of cool recipes and iβm more than likely gonna bribe the owner of the yard it hangs over with the promise of jelly in order to harvest bc the species is protected in FL and cant be taken from public land
@CourtlyKingfern i also love tomatoes! this is one of my moms pieces that hangs in my kitchen hehe i thought youβd appreciate
@TomTom1130 YES! I love growing strawberries β¦ although I donβt get to harvest many. π
@FicusOnTheGood yes! Love that wall hanging.. πππ»β€οΈ
@sarahsalith you guys will be the first to know π€ππ»π§‘
and @CourtlyKingfern itβs in my kitchen with all my food art (at cat-eye-level thereβs art of things the cats would consider food. a salamander, butterfly, pumpkin and the like) ππ

My favorite Herb is Parsley !
Oh, how I LOVE this power herb! It's packed with antioxidants and bursting with vitamins A, K, and C.
This little green gem helps keep your blood sugar steady and is a true friend to your heart, kidneys, and bones.
Parsley isn't just a garnish; it's a star in any cuisine.
Add it to soups, salads, or fish dishes, and you'll instantly elevate the flavor to a whole new level!

@FicusOnTheGood Wow! That is amazing!! My mom had a tomato clock in her kitchen! A great memory, I donβt have it and I donβt think my brother does, but, I remember it exactly. BTW, Better Boy is an earlier version of Beefmaster. The original version of those was Big Boy. My mom grew the earlier two.
@sarahsalith Sounds good, Sarah (the pizza with my π
and your bread) But I wonder if you have tried a home grown tomato? Cause if you only have tried a storebought version they donβt even seem related except the way they look. So I challenge you to get one from a neighbor or someone that you can trust that the tomato came from their garden.Cut it up and add some salt, or, peel it back and sprinkle on some salt and really taste it. If you still donβt like it, I will throw in the towel!
@AC73LoveCats I will! You have my word.
My neighbor is always asking what he can do for me and I'll let him known that he can give me one of his homegrown tomatoes. (:

@AC73LoveCats @sarahsalith my mom would always complain about βtruck ripeningβ just as a catch-all phrase for chemically ripened tomatoes. the commercial ones need to stay good for longer so they can be bought and sold or stock restaurants and the like. what you donβt get is that slow, wonderful conversion of the sugars that you do on the vine and because they donβt make that conversion you get mealy tomatoes. sadly that is the only kind of tomato a ton of people will ever try but iβm a big proponent of eating those suckers right off the vine. they never used to make it into the house ππ
@FicusOnTheGood you had me at sugar!! I'll try one soon
PEARS!! π
Specifically the Peckham pear because itβs just so soft, sweet, and juicy! I donβt see many people ever mention pears, I feel like theyβre an underrated fruit. In elementary school we had this interesting program that would occur every month where weβd try random foods, simple foods like β5 different types of tomatoesβ or a collection of things a few things to get us out of our comfort zones, and one of the times we were introduced to pears, jicama, and honeydewβ¦ all of which I ended up liking!
So for me, pears are a good memory and theyβre truly just delicious! Donβt forget about them, eat a pear π π

@ILoveMyPlants oh no! Balancing wildlife and growing food is so tough! I hope the bunny has been fun to watch at least!
@JCPlantProper I haven't tried them either! I'll have to look for them next time I'm in FL!
@AC73LoveCats teach me everything!! I can never have enough tomatoes in my house! I love your use of marigolds, I use nasturtium with mine.
@sarahsalith I've tried seed collecting a few times, I love that you do it every year with your chilis!
@BabeVila edible flowers are so underrated! The bumblebees on sunflowers are π₯Ή and I can't help but watch them when the visit.
@TomTom1130 yes! I love how every strawberry gives you more plants, too!
@RenaissanceMan I love that you have a tomato hookup, they look like a forest!
@FicusOnTheGood (I LOVE your username) what are sea grapes?!
@BlueButtonSnack my mouth is watering! There really is nothing better in summer.
@PlantBeach it's so cute!!! I've heard of them but I haven't had the chance to try one. I am definitely going to see if they would grow in my zone!
@SuccCollector "come in a natural packaging" π, can we also talk about how portable/on the go friendly they are?
@HappyPlantBFF I didn't know adding parsley to my dishes was giving my family such a boost! Going to add even more now, thanks for the tip!
@oldplantlady I love that your peach tree doesn't take any crap! Give her an extra "you're awesome" from me, please!
@PricklyThumb tell me your mojito secrets, please!
@WarrantedMelon I'm pretty sure strawberries make everything better
@RousingSourwood do you have a favorite tomato and pepper combo for your salsa?
@itsjordan ah! You're right! We all forget about pears despite how great they are! When my dog was a puppy he taught himself to jump up and pick the pears off the pear trees. We have no idea why he started but it was (is) adorable, especially because our last name means "pear tree." I love your memory with them, too. Definitely putting that variety on my list!

@sarahsalith I so far have 7 growing
@FicusOnTheGood Thank you for explaining it, Eleanor. My husband and I canβt imagine how people can put men on the moon and yet have not figured out a way to allow tomatoes to ripen on the vine and be transported to stores all over. @sarahsalith Unless tomatoes ripen a lot sooner in Tennessee, you wonβt have one soon. At least here in Ohio, it takes a good part of the summer. If Ohioans are lucky we get them sometime in July but often not until August, depending on when they are planted and the weather in the summer. They are originally from Mexico and love heat and humidity. You see the tag I have in the ground next to one of my plants with the label of Beefmaster, states 80 days. 80 days from planting to harvest. Planting in mid-May, we have harvest in early August. Donβt try one til it is perfectly ripe but not beyond. Your neighbor will know when he has a ripe one to give you. And they are not sweet. But you do need salt.
My favorite edible thing I am growing right now is my black opal basil. It smells AMAZING!! She's in bloom, and I'm going to collect seeds from her when she's ready. π We love making pesto with basil as well as adding it to marinara sauce.
If it has to be a fruit or veg, I'd pick tomatoes! π We have some in a raised bed and a few in some pots. Tomatoes are so good in sauces and salsas, and they grow well here in Missouri. #gardening #edibleplants #basil #tomatoes
