@MariansOasis I have actually done a lot of reading about fillers for pots because I was apprehensive since there seems to be so much conflicting information. As for my planter, it is a Lechuza self watering planter; within the base there is an insert that goes half way down with a sub irrigation system. The whole insert comes out. I’ve attached a couple pics of what I’m talking about. As for what to fill the planter with—-I have yet to personally try Bloem’s Ups-Daisy, although I have many Bloem products. It’s an insider that creates a false bottom and it drainage holes. Otherwise, using any rocks or materials that aren’t porous can lead to root rot because they create an issue whether the roots are pulling up and the gravity as pulling water down and it’s just sits there. Perch water line I think it’s called. Porous rocks like pumice or lava rock or even perlite would be okay albeit perlite is so light. Jay Scott’s who makes high end fiberglass planters recommends packing peanuts just be sure to enclose them in a bag and seal them up. Crushed cans also need to be sealed as water will otherwise be trapped and house bacteria.
@TexanExpat very interesting. Not familiar with Lechuza products so will check them out more👍. I’ve seen the Ups a Daisy but so far the sizes haven’t fit into my collection. I’ve used Pearlite but then the roots of the plant grew down into the Pearlite. I tried packing peanuts but they collapsed! I figured maybe the fertilizer in the soil ate away at the styrofoam?? Idk 🤷♀️. Maybe I’ll try sealing in a bag. Most of my plants are not bigger than a 6” pot but I have a few that are bigger and I’d like to try a tall planter like yours.
@MariansOasis what was your concern with the roots growing into the perlite ? Perlite it itself a suitable substrate got growing plants. You can get landscape fabric and plant over pumice which bigger and more weigjt than perlite but also lightweight and porous. Also a suitable substrate itself. Depending on the plant I will sometimes fill the whole thing with substrate. It the roots can use the space and I’m not concerned about weight, I can achieve a bigger plant. If you search on Amazon I just saw this frame that clips on the sides and is a cradle for the planter with the taller planter becoming a cachepot
@TexanExpat ooh I like the idea of a cradle for the planter! Have to check that out 👍. The thing I didn’t like about the roots growing into the Pearlite was it got all over the place when I’d remove the plant to water it. Probably too I didn’t expect that to happen so I vetoed it as an option. Now I’ve had more experience I wouldn’t be as concerned.
@MariansOasis if you can’t find it lmk I might be able to find it in Amazon history
@TexanExpat searched around a bit on Amazon but couldn’t find. If you still have history that would be great 👍. I did find this one though, any experience with it?

@TexanExpat awesome! Thank you
