Fifty-two million years ago, one plant, in the Arctic Ocean, right near the North Pole, contributed the most towards pulling 3,000 parts per million CO2 out of the atmosphere, single-handedly, in 800,000 years.

Azolla is an aquatic fern that has a symbiotic relationship with the cyanobacterium that lives in the plant, and it produces omega-3 fatty acids and fixes nitrogen. Azolla can grow ten centimeters thick on the top of fresh water.
