@Amateurbotany gorgeous. Fun fact:
"Sempervivum" is derived from Latin, where "semper" means "always" and "vivum" means "living." Together, "sempervivum" translates to "always living" or "ever-living." This name reflects the plant's hardy nature and its ability to thrive in a wide range of conditions. βhen and chicks,β are known for their rosette-shaped growth and resilience. Given the name you might be signing up for a long duty. these plants propagate through offsets (commonly referred to as "chicks"), ensuring the continuation of the colony even as individual plants perish. This cycle of life and death within the species highlights the irony of their name. Good luck π

@Amateurbotany you mean they bloom! πππ€© I just bought my first ones this summer! ππ»π€π
@CourtlyKingfern they are my favorite succulents and this barrel has been growing strong for the last 4 years. I have offsets in there from different friends so this bunch is very special to me! Once they bloom, the parent plant does die off but fortunately for me this one has MANY offsets to leave as a legacy!!!
@TexanExpat once this parent plant started to bloom I dove in deep on the history and taxonomy of the sempervivum! They are by far my favorite succulents! I live in MI so being able to grow and succeed in healthy hens and chicks feels like a real accomplishment. They are winter hearty but only if the right conditions are met for their dormancy period. I just started another barrel and cannot wait to see if I can be as successful with my new plants! Iβll share the progress of this bloom because from what I understand it can be quite amazing to behold!!!
@Amateurbotany thatβs quite an accomplishment. I donβt know whether youβre familiar with Deborah Lee Baldwin, but if there were an OG succulent queen, itβs her. She has been doing books and YouTubing for years and you should check out her succulent garden. Wow. Anyways, she made a comment in one of her videos that it wasnβt until recent (when I saw the vid) that she had learned how to grow sempervicum. I have not had much success with succulents; it gets so hot here in SA, itβs not as fun for me to manage them as other plants. I do well with Kalanchoe, so they are my jam. I never did figure out sempervivum, but maybe we all have our own succulent match sorry sempervivum being yours.
