My nemesis: the Maidenhair fern saga

Have any of you ever had a plant that felt like your nemesis? That plant to me is my Maidenhair fernπŸ˜’ I find myself staring at her often wondering what she is thinking and why does she hate me. One day full and beautiful making you fall deep in love with the thought that she might actually thrive, and the next day she’s brown and her hair is dry and it’s all your fault because your time and dedication will never be enough for her …making me happy and unhappy simultaneously πŸ˜–πŸƒπŸŒ¬οΈπŸ€¦πŸ½β€β™€οΈ #maidenhairfern #HappyPlants #ferns #PlantAddict #PlantsMakePeopleHappy #PlantTherapy

Mine do this. F*€kers. Or at least they used to! Mostly it was not quite wet enough feet ad they seem to prefer a liquid seaweed fertiliser over the slow release pellets. I have standard maidenhairs and pacific maid maidenhairs. They get fertilised about once a month with a half strength seaweed fertiliser (that’s the β€œfern” instructions so I just follow those).

Stick him on a plate and don’t let the plate be dry more than a day or 2, and fertilise.

Also, don’t mist πŸ˜… I had one standard that legit browned every damned leaf when I tried misting. Thought the thing had up and died but I lit it on fire and it bounced back πŸ‘ŒπŸ½
YES MY #PeaceLily IS MY NEMESIS #frenemies
I have two plants like this that, no matter what I do, my care (even tried lack of care lol) is only enough to keep them surviving and never thriving πŸ€¦πŸΌβ€β™€οΈπŸ˜…
Yes, mine is any type of Peperomia caperata πŸ˜“
Yes! Mine is one particular Anthurium that just doesn’t like me! And that Anthurium was never a problem until I brought in a few hybrids! I think she’s snobby! Where is she now? In the landfill. 🀫🀣🀣🀣
@RealSimpleMama πŸ€£πŸ’―
@AnthuriumQueen yes snobby is definitely the word🀣
@PoisonIvys ok that sounds like a plan!
@GreatNinebark tag me in updates pretty please? I would love to see how it does!! Usually I had a new shoot (or 5!) on each plant about a week and a half - 2 weeks after fertilising. When they stopped sending out new ones is when I fertilise again. Initially it was every 2 weeks they were getting a light dose but that was end of spring/beginning of summer. Now it’s autumn they will probably start going longer until they’re at every 6 weeks getting dosed in midwinter
I had a Persian shield for 5 minutes that died INSTANTLY. I’m too scared to get another one. Like, I was shocked with how fast and dramatically that thing died. And yet I was eyeballing another one yesterday.πŸ™ˆ
My nemesis is ferns. No matter what I did to keep them alive, they hated me. A never again plant!!
Welcome to Greg Eve. Happy growing πŸƒπŸŒ±πŸŒΏπŸ₯°
I have an outside rule. I will do everything I possibly can to care for a plant but if I’ve tried everything and it’s still being an asshole, it goes outside and it can risk it with Mother Nature. Either it survives or it doesn’t.
@PoisonIvys yes!!ok will do tons of new shoots poking out she seems to love the fish tank water I shall never mist her again πŸ₯ΊπŸ€£πŸŒ¬οΈπŸƒπŸ’—
@GiftedRainbow Right I feel like screaming Off with your head!!!!
@Sassylimey thank you 😊 πŸ’—πŸŒ±
@GreatNinebark fish tank water is perfect!!! It’s already fertilised with fishy goodness and had the chlorine taken out πŸ‘Œ it should also be ph balanced.

There’s a point, my maidenhairs get the same water as my aroids and Philos. I honestly cheat and use fish tank water ager in my watering can 🀣🀣 but I didn’t think to ask about your ferns water source πŸ€¦β€β™€οΈ

You shouldn’t need to fertilise if you’re using the fish tank water exclusively 😊 a super interesting concept, majority of ferns can be grown on volcanic rock in a pebble tray, no soil, no pot. A fish tank would be perfect placement if you can place the rock so at least 2/3 of the roots are above the water line. Clip on (not suction cap) breeder tanks are excellent for this 😊 I want to set up a tank with a mix of the birds nest cultivars on rocks and guppies for the bright colours in the water so that when the reflection is just right it will look like the β€œfireworks” ferns have actual fireworks 😍
@PoisonIvys wow that is truly great information thank you 😊 πŸ’—πŸ’—πŸ‘πŸ½πŸ‘πŸ½it makes me want to do further research on my nemesis and perhaps write an article because it’s beyond interesting wow I really hope you set that tank up it’s going to be spectacular !!!!I want to see πŸ‘€!!!πŸŒ±πŸŒ±πŸŒ±πŸŒ±πŸ’—
@GreatNinebark the fern tank is probably a good 12 months of being started tbh πŸ˜… currently I’m working on a heated hydroponic set up for my alocasia to get them through winter without having to carry (and find room for) over 50 pots into the house πŸ˜…

I would be interested in reading your article if you write it!!! I have considered keeping a bit more of a journal than just sciencey notes. Your hands on experience with this will make for a great read I think.
Yes I get it wow that’s smart Alocasia’s are my favorites οΏΌ even though they can be a hard bunch to manage awesome πŸ’— I will tag you with the link when I get to it I just finished an article on Green therapy and the power of plants in boosting mental health as I get older IοΏΌ know for a fact I want to surround myself with plant life for the rest of my days lol they have become my best friends
@GreatNinebark thank you!! And thank you for the best comment too 😊 I think I forgot that earlier πŸ˜… I get all β€œfact focused” and forget my social graces πŸ€¦β€β™€οΈπŸ«£

Alocasia are glorious in water 😍 one of the most gorgeous root systems ever on a plant which I put down to the stunning white colour.

It’s an ambitious project that’s for sure!! Especially using DIY and whatever is laying around πŸ˜… I have enough fish tanks I collected for other things and didn’t end up using, even have a sump tank πŸ‘πŸ‘Œ that’s what kicked off the idea initially, looking for an efficient use for the sink tank without removing the dividers.

Feel free to tag me in any article you write, I’m always looking for info on just about every subject there is tbh πŸ˜…
I LOVE this post. This #MaidenHairFern group is quite the graveyard. I thought I was the only one who fell in love with my beloved Lady Di and felt the heartbreak of falling for a diva. I thought my calatheas were tough! Soooo…here’s to plant weirdos…
1) Everyone in my life thinks I’m crazy because I’m going to a fern show (San Diego) this month (am I joining the fern club? I just might)
2) My girl loves the shower humidity, so I often put her in after I shower and the hubby has been frightened more than once by the unexpected company 3) I repotted her with a few other fern friends to see if she would be happier (she isn’t) 4) I have decided to get a fish tank with real fish for the aquarium water and humidity. I thought I was crazy, but I think just this group gets me. πŸ₯°πŸ₯°πŸ₯° And of course course she still has brown leaves and tortures me with her subtle rejection of my love. #PlantAddict #FernFriends
