How to deal with Gnats - #PlantingOnABudget edition πŸ’Έ

Hey #GregGang πŸ‘‹πŸ½

✨ I thought I would share my β€œsecret sauce”, a cost-effective way to catch those darn gnats! Along with sticky traps and systemics (that can be quite expensive!), I like to use my homemade gnat trap recipe that works GREAT!

πŸ› I’ve realized shortly after getting into plants, that #NewPlants tend to come with infested or soggy soil that attracts buggies! I always either repot or quarantine my plant for at least a week, but sometimes even that won’t be enough, so I place my gnat traps!

βœ… Here’s my β€œSecret Sauce” and what you’ll need :

β€’ Dish or Hand Soap (I use scented because I’ve noticed gnats like sweet scents)
β€’ Distilled White Vinegar/Apple Cider Vinegar
β€’ 70% Isopropyl Alcohol
β€’ Water

❗️Instructions :
In a small dish or container (I use Powerade/Gatorade bottles)
- 3 pumps of dish/hand soap
- 2 teaspoons of Vinegar
- 2 teaspoons of Isopropyl
- Fill with Water

⭐️ I place these in between my props that like humidity (and are watered often) and they attract *most* gnats that fly around. I don’t have a gnat problem atm (thanks to my traps!!!), but I still have them just in case! 😌🌿

Thanks @kscape love this mix! Saw it on a post here in Gregland and it works so well....and I have all the stuff on hand bonus!!! Keeping this post to share later!!! πŸ₯°πŸ₯°
Do we put this in the plants?
I thought the Heinz bottle was baked beansπŸ˜‚
@PlantyPlanter noooo, in a dish/container!

πŸ’€πŸ’€ I haven’t had baked beans in 4+ years
@kscape so we just put it next to the pots?
@PlantyPlanter ily Noah but all info is in the post πŸ‘€πŸ’•πŸ’•πŸ’•
@kscape ohhhhh omg I forgot about that part😭 sorry
Greg needs a β€œsave” options for your tips πŸ˜‚
@alissang bahahaha I agree! @ForFoxSake and I shortly talked about a way to bookmark or use tags for informational posts like these in a post. @RJG any clue if anything like this is on #gregteam’s list? The ability to save/bookmark informational posts?
Def gonna try this!!! Also did I see on one of your last posts to water other plants with pothos water? Cause I have so many props of pothos going on and would love to try!
@Mrgncrch Yup yup! I indeed said that! Pothos cuttings already benefit other plants in water, so…why not water other plants WITH Pothos water! This is the post I made talking about this specifically and I’m trying it with my VSOH

https://greg.app/question/3bu8gj/save-your-pothos-water-this-is-an-announcement-from-the-founder-of-sciencewithgreg-to-save-your
@kscape Got some plants to water and some pothos water to change! I thought I saw you post it but couldn’t find it and didn’t wanna post and not give credit πŸ˜ŠπŸ’›
@Mrgncrch Aw that’s so sweet! Yes I’ve made tons and tons of posts of #PothosWater but if you wanna keep up, you can check either #ScienceWithGreg or my personal #kscapedream for all my experiments 😊✨
@ShinyBudew You are so sweet!! πŸ˜ŠπŸ’•
@kscape πŸ₯ΊπŸ’–πŸ₯Ί much love to you my anime plant friend
@ShinyBudew hope I got u closer to ur check mark! 🀞🏽✨
@kscape yah. In the mean time if you hit share > copy link > post in a note > click on it whenever you need!
That's a great idea, @RJG!
@alissang, you can also save it in your reading list or bookmark list on your phone. (:
This is right up my alley, I've used water, apple cider vinegar, a drop or two of honey, with a step or two of dish soap, for fruit flies, thankfully haven't had that problem this year! Thank you Dariana, I love home remedies πŸ₯°
@sarahsalith @RJG Thank you both so much! 😊
@Sassylimey I’m right there with you! I love home remedies, especially if I have the ingredients in my pantry! 😌
I don’t have a gnat problem no longer I do see the green flies hopefully it will work for my vegetables indoor garden
@Indoorgreens Please let me know if this works for your garden!
Thank u its indoor but hopefully it works lol
@Indoorgreens hahahah I just reread it 🀣🀣
Vinegar is such a dangerous game! I think you should add a warning to the post for those that might not know how bad vinegar can be for plants just in case they might misunderstand your directions... πŸ–€πŸ–€πŸ–€πŸ–€
@kscape QUESTION! πŸ™‹β€β™€οΈ does 91% isopropyl alcohol work πŸ€”
@WickedValkyrie edited. I’ve never had issues with the measurements and usually the other liquids dilute it, but thanks!
@ShinyBudew Personally think it’s too strong, which is why I use 70% 😊
@kscape noted thank you!!! I only had 91% lying around so I’ll get some 70% to use if the 91% doesn’t work!
@ShinyBudew You can use it, but I would suggest diluting it by A LOT or maybe using half a teaspoon to one just for the β€œkilling” effect.
Omg I literally have a gnat and fly problem at my house too! This is a blessingπŸ™πŸ»
@kscape , could I also use shampoo/conditioner or body wash? I mostly use Dawn in my houseπŸ˜…
@DazzlingOasis I wouldn’t recommend shampoo/conditioner as it has chemicals that can clog or harm your plant’s leaves, but I’ve not tried it. If you have Dawn Dish Soap, that would work just as good! 😊
All my little traps have caught gnats!! This is AMAZING
That’s the mix I’ve been using for years and it’s perfect around plants and if you have fresh fruits and veggies sitting out.
I used my pothos prop water the other day when I changed it out - it just seemed to be the smart thing to do since they have so much glorious growth hormones
@kscape mine doesn't seem to be workingπŸ€”
@DazzlingOasis Hmmm.. I was gonna make an update post on how mine has been catching a few! πŸ€”
@kscape maybe I should try using a sweeter smelling soap
I use this in the kitchen by my herbs, but without the alcohol. If you swish the mix around the sides the dish soap makes it impossible for the blighters to climb out of the mix. I also cover the jar with cling film/Saran wrap & pop 5mm holes in the lid, just in case any change their minds! My kids find the results repugnant but hard to argue with.
