It's an oncidium orchid. They are known for their many flowers. Most of the time the flowers are smaller than phals, but the spikes have several branches. Finding one in a flower shop is a stroke of luck. Sometimes you can find "Cambria" orchids (orchids that belong to the broader oncidium family, crossed with each other) but seldom a true dancing lady, i.e. oncidium like this. Many are known to be highly fragrant, filling whole rooms with their smell, one even smells like chocolate. Like RoseRed's they can grow very big, or they can remain rather small, but still with an abundance of flowers. If you really are interested, you can find them at specialized orchid nurseries.
@MusicalRedmint , very interesting. That explains why it would be difficult to find them in my small town. ๐Ÿ™‚
@Eelhsa I've heard you have really good orchid nurseries in the US though. But beware, they are highly addictive ๐Ÿ˜€
@MusicalRedmint, most likely! Iโ€™m in Canada though. ๐Ÿ˜†
@Eelhsa Ah. Sry, just assumed because almost everyone here seems to be from the US, and didn't look at your card๐Ÿ˜…
@MusicalRedmint, no worries! I think most people are. ๐Ÿ˜
@MusicalRedmint @Eelhsa if space is an issue, you can get tiny oncidiums too - my personal favourite is the Oncidium Twinkle. Her flowers are shaped like little stars and they are vanilla scented. They are a very good beginner oncidium as they are much more forgiving if you accidentally donโ€™t keep them moist enough and they are hardy. They can produce multiple flower spikes at a time too though the blooms donโ€™t last as long as phals, about 5-8 weeks max, I would say.
@MotherOfOrchids, beautiful! Iโ€™m not sure I could find one, but it looks lovely! โค๏ธ
@MotherOfOrchids they are great aren't they? Yours is very cute and looks so healthy. My own is really not doing well right now, though. It doesn't take well to higher temperatures and without an AC, I wasn't careful enough this summer and had no cooler place to put it. ๐Ÿ˜ž let's hope, it recovers, it's still tiny and so pink.

@Eelhsa The twinkle is iconic and easy to find, when you open yourself up to online nurseries. I really can recommend them if you are a fan of many many flowers and of fragrant blooms.
@Eelhsa @MusicalRedmint @MotherOfOrchids Iโ€™ve learned so much about orchids from following your conversationโ€”thank you! I actually bought my dancing lady orchid from Trader Joeโ€™s for maybe $15 US! It feels like a real bargain now, not to mention all the enjoyment Iโ€™m getting from watching this lovely plant bloom! ๐Ÿ˜
@LaSiguanaba , I donโ€™t know much orchid-wise, so Iโ€™m glad to read comments from knowledgeable people as well! ๐Ÿ™‚
@MusicalRedmint , I may search for Canadian growers at some point. I live in the middle-of-nowhere, so getting plants can be a challenge! Iโ€™ve found most of them online and started them from one or two leaf cuttings. ๐Ÿ˜†
Understandable. It really is very very beautiful. $15 feels little for this much joy. ๐Ÿ˜Š
@Eelhsa I know the struggle. I do live in a city, but I only have 1 (+1/2) real garden centers nearby, no real nurseries, nothing. The next orchid nursery is still across half of my country. But they are great with shipping and quality. With my hoyas I've lucked out and found a store that sells them, just 50-60km from my city. and for cuttings and less special orchids, you can find them on our Craigslist equivalent sometimes.
As for the rest... I am really hoping and searching for a rose ping and spoon leaved sundews, that I don't have to ship. I've been searching and searching, but I'm about to give up. And that even though I live not exactly in a small town.
Good luck hunting
@LaSiguanaba youโ€™re welcome
