How do I help save my little plant? I need help badly. Iβm a beginner to taking care of plants and a first timer to succulents. One picture is what my plant originally looked like and the sad looking one is what it looks like now. #helpneeded #help #beginnerplantparent #NewPlantMom #needhelp
12ft to light, indirect
4β pot without drainage

@LucidPinkcactus okay, it might be thirsty or it might be overwatered.. to be able to tell you, are you okay with uprooting it & seeing if the stem/roots are black or mushy? Because it looks like regular soil, the pot is big & you donβt have drainage I just want to make sure it wasnβt sitting in damp soil too long..
@LucidPinkcactus Hello! As I can see there is a really big pot for this tiny guy, a pot should be the same in size as the root system of the plant +2 cm in diameter. And also it looks like it lacks water. I'd recommend you to repot it and water after the repotting. All succs love water as any plant, so water it all the time as the soil feels dry inside the pot (you can use a toothpick). Hope your little buddy will be ok! π
@Artistic_Stoner I will up root it to check and send a picture as I am not sure what I am looking for.
@LucidPinkcactus yes please send a picture before you repot & water it.. the roots &/or stem will be a black or dark brown, mushy & almost fall apart if itβs rot
@Artistic_Stoner the roots did not look mushy
@LucidPinkcactus sorry the pictures are good but they did look like dark roots.
@LucidPinkcactus that is good then! My recommendation would to get a terracotta pot same size or smaller with a drainage hole. Your soil looks okay, but if you have any perlite on hand Iβd add some to make it a bit more breathable to dry out. Then give it a good drink! Just make sure the top soil doesnβt stay damp more than 3 days, could encourage rot. But yes looks like your little guy was just thirsty!
@LucidPinkcactus that's ok. Just water it and leave. It's better to make a small planthouse (just put it in a plastic bag and tie it). If you have an extra light lamp put it under in a warm place.
@Dariasgarden thank you!
@LucidPinkcactus if you are not sure about the roots & what you are looking for, hereβs a good video to show & explain what root rot is. Hope your baby bounces back π€ https://youtu.be/E1hKceBYr3w?si=jmL_r_gipD0OPchU
@LucidPinkcactus were all here to help π€
@Artistic_Stoner I will take a look at it thank you.
@WildNorth β€οΈthank you and I love the pun.
@LucidPinkcactus π couldnβt help myself
In the last picture is that water sitting in the bottom of it if it is dump it out I would change the soil get me some nice full of nutrients. I donβt use the black potting soil. I use a different one thatβs brown dark brown color no dirt. Itβs called soil Sunrise and itβs for tropical house plants. Yours is a succulent, so it should be more coarse and grainy. I would just set it on top of the new potting soil and let it see if the roots developed by itself and if you have any root grower dip in the soil. Hormex is the name. Put it in there then put it in the soil and see what happens within a week and then follow up with another report whatβs going on?
@clairsheart I will dump out the water, thanks for letting me know. It is a temporary pot for now but soon I will provide it with a better pot. I donβt understand everything you said about the soil, sorry.
@LucidPinkcactus You got great answers here, so I just wanted to mention that you should be able to still keep track of watering without upgrading. I donβt pay for the app and can keep track. If a plant pops up in your watering schedule section, you can swipe left or right to either mark it as watered or snooze the watering. You can also manually put in when you watered it by going to the specific plant and editing its information details by clicking the 3 circles at the top right of the screen when you click on a plant in your oasis.
Sadly I think it may be too lateβ¦ itβs rotted from over watering and probably lack of light. Echeveria need a lot of light to thrive. Also they require very little water. The pot may have also been too big considering itβs a very small plant. So that can leave room for extra moisture and that will lead to a rotted plant.
I noticed from your very first picture that your original soil it came in was dehydrated peat. That was your start to your problem. You can see in the picture the soul around the plant is dry but the rest the pot is wet. Any time you buy a new cacti and succulent there are steps to take depending how it came. You can read my post on this. I just did it last week.
I recommend bonsai jackβs succulent and cactus mix. I use it with all my succulents. I mix it half and half with potting soil. It drains away all extra water quickly. Most of mine are in plastic pots and I have no trouble. I just wait until the soil is dry and soak throughly. Iβm sure if you follow any of this great advice in the comments your baby will flourish. Best of luck β£οΈ
