So I’m not sure if my earlier post happened. I am so excited! I don’t like shipping once it starts snowing, so getting the last of my ‘I can’t live without plants,’ I feel proud for only getting three. Seriously, impulse control problems… with that being said, here they are! #HappyPlants #PlantsMakePeopleHappy #PlantAddict #NewGrowth #PlantTherapy #PlantCorner #RarePlants #PlantHaul #PlantShelfie
@Idplantthat 😱🙀😱😍 Oh MY. What are the alocasias names?
@TRose @DreamMachine First one is a Black Satun Pink Bone Alocasia. Second is a Yucatán Pink Princess and the third is a Pseudo Sanderiana Variegated Aurea! So excited for these corms!
Oh yeh i forgot, after you posted last Tuesday abt your Alocasias i went on Sat and got meself a pseudo sand aurea myself! Sold to me as a bull sand, which i think is nice enough already, but the label said P.sanderiana which i suppose is a pseudo sand. Which is even nicer coz i like the pseudo sand more than the bull sand!
@Araceae oh my goodness! It’s gorgeous, it’s already variegated, it’s going to be absolutely stunning! I can’t wait to see your veins and colors you get! With the different climates and lighting, I’m always so curious.. 🧐 I’m so excited for you! It’s magnificent color 🫶🏻
@Idplantthat those are stunning!!! I never heard of Black Satun before - better believe I am googling now!!
Actually now you have me thinking about the alocasia corms.. I would like to get your opinion on mine. I’m gonna tag Heidi too, and Nadia just because I know she’ll be interested in learning with me. 🤓 My Scalprum corms are beginning to sprout in regular garden soil and in a little non- draining pot. I was basically just seeing if I *could* get them to sprout with what I had available without really planning for what if they *did* sprout. Should I think about plopping these into a little 3.5 self self waterer with aroid soil (I have all available) now? Or wait til they’re bigger? I’m thinking if I wait for the roots to get more established, the soil change may do more damage. Also, the 4 inch self waterer would still fit under the cloche so I could still keep it in high humidity. @Idplantthat @DreamMachine @princesspitstop (Heidi I know you’re probably busy preparing for the move, dont feel like you need to reply right away!)
@Jho ooh! They are so cute and sprouting! So I wouldn’t move it yet and probably not till it’s a little bigger either of them. But in the future, you can also use straight volcanic substrate, semi-hydro, and/ or perlite. You can do a self-watering or one of the string-style ones… whatever is easiest for you. If you have some clear Solo cups, that is what I use and I literally keep them in what they are growing them in, flip my cup, and wait till they are a little bigger to transfer so they don’t lose their progress or get stressed. But honestly, just the Solo cup gives it enough space to grow but also enough humidity to allow it to grow freely. Does that make sense? I’m terrible at explaining things 🤣
@Idplantthat yeah, that makes sense. I just feel like I’m trading a shock now for a shock later, and it may be easier to minimize while it’s smaller. The bf would definitely have something to say if I start leaving solo cups of dirt around the apartment - he’d be so confused if I was growing or casting. 😂 I’m hesitant to do another semihydro the way my OG scalprum reacted, although I am gradually moving towards more wick-style so if the bug ever bites again, I’ll be ready. What do you think abooooouuuutttt… if I filled the pot with aroid soil, then carefully moved the corms with a thin layer of the mix they’re in and layer it on top? That way, they’ll grow into the proper mix, the top layer will gradually erode/mix in, and they won’t need to be disturbed for some time?
@Jho, I mean you could definitely try it? The only reason I don’t is because when plants are so young, they are more susceptible to trauma and stress. But if you are using the monosilicic acid for your plants, I bet they’d be less susceptible to diseases and trauma, and how much nutrients they can uptake. It can be too much or too little. But I mean definitely try. I feel like your plants are pretty healthy, and you are giving them what they need and want enough that you’ve got a higher success ratio.
@Idplantthat And we’re off. 🧑🔬 (I had just watered the old pot when I decided to do this, so that’s why it’s so wet.) TBH, I hadn’t really considered fertilizing them already. Maybe I’ll add some light fert in to the next water. Thank you for your expertise!
@Jho @Idplantthat ooh thanks Josh for tagging me 🤓 🙌🏼 That is EXACTLY the line of thought I’ve had before—shock now or shock later? I think all of us here on this thread do things without following the rules all the time, and I think that is the best way to learn! I will be following your progress with delight, and I’m excited to see how your corms do 🤗
@Idplantthat @DreamMachine thanks! They are scalprum corms. I grabbed them when I transferred my ailing scalprum to leca juuuuust in case. 😂 Nadia, I totally agree - my plant collection is like 70% for beauty, 30% for science. Hahaha I’ll keep yas posted! 🤓
@Jho @DreamMachine I couldn’t agree more with both of you! Not only do we all live in different environments and climates, but what the ‘rules’ are and are not, I think of as more suggestions rather than just has-to-be’s. Ohhh! Josh, I love 💕 the texture and patterns of these guys! I don’t know if you guys want to look at this link, but it’s helped me just figure a few things out over time 😉 https://www.aroidpedia.com/journal/alocasia-scalprum
@Idplantthat scalprum was my first alocasia. 😍 I haven’t seen this website before; i’ll be digging in. Thanks!
@Jho @Idplantthat ooh thank you for the alocasia page!! I will in turn share one of my favorites. It’s written in a way that makes it really easy for my brain to latch on to all the information, and they list sources at the end!

@Araceae your most-likely-pseudo-sand is BEAUTIFUL 🤩 I love all those markings on such a wee baby leaf!!
@DreamMachine ohhh! I’m excited. I’m going to start reading this one now! 😃🙌
@Jho @Idplantthat This all just me me think of these videos with a teeny tiny itsy bitsy alocasia 😱
