Happy Thursday again everyone! Today's the day to start our little experiment restricting light to those Holiday Cactus to ensure blooms by Thanksgiving! If you're not into it that's perfectly fine because we're going to need some that aren't to determine if all the hassle covering and uncovering for the next 6-8 weeks is even going to be worthwhile. Starting tonight at 6 pm either cover them with a box large enough to completely cover the entire plant without damage or move it inside to a dark closet until 8 am. Time can be adjusted to fit work schedules just as long as they remain in complete darkness for 14 hours a day. So set an alarm on your phone so you don't forget. ππ I've got some new growth happening over here! I know it's going to slow down soon so I'm milking it for all it's worth lol
I didn't plan this but it looks like it's Philodendron day! Olivia my Philo Xanadu, Clementine the Prince of Orange and McColley's Finale!
Have a fantastic rest of your day guys! Show me some of your Star πPupils!
**Remember everyone is invited over for Brunch! If you want to join the group let me know and I'll happily add your name to the list so you'll be notified or click on the # hashtags to join the group that way! ππͺ΄ #philodendron #princeoforange #mccolleysfinale #happyplants #plantsmakepeoplehappy #thanksgivingcactus #falsechristmascactus #christmascactus

@princesspitstop your philos are gorgeous!! I wonβt participate because we will be gone for part of the month. Iβll be the βdo nothingβ part of the experiment π¬ ππ
@DreamMachine Counting back 6-8 weeks from December 25th would put it around the 1st of November. I forgot to add that cooler weather also plays a part in blooming. Given the weather conditions where you are you have a better chance than I will of getting blooms on time without having to do anything. But we'll see! You might naturally get some even before Christmas that last through the first of the year! It will be cool to find out! Pun intended π
@MariansOasis lol See there's a part for everyone to play! π
Love this reminder! Iβll probably stay in the control group with @MariansOasis, but canβt wait to see the results! Maybe it will motivate me to partake next year π€
@debbiedo go Control Group!! π
#brunchataudreys @princesspitstop Good Afternoon! π Here are some of my Show Stoppers, who I am proud of! My Croton Petra and my Tortum. π
@princesspitstop Good Afternoon! π Gorgeous plant oasis, your plants are simply stunning π€©
@SweetAzurebluet Hi Harriet! Your Croton is gorgeous and doing much better than mine is! I've heard people talking about Tortum lately. Now I know what they look like! I love the look of it! π
@SweetAzurebluet Awe thank you Harriet! π
@princesspitstop Your Philodendrons are to die for ππ€©ππ€© Absolut perfection! Btw does that reducing light also work for Christmas cacti? I guess I could look it up, but since you already into the experiment I figured you might know?? Well actually Iβm just being lazy π€·πΌββοΈ! Thanks in advance!
@Ms.Persnickety Awe thank you for the compliment. π I'm pretty sure it does and 6-8 weeks before Christmas would be around the 1st of November. I was going to say that if you already live in an area that has started getting chilly it will more than likely do it on its own but I see you're in Florida. π Along with imitating shorter days there needs to be a temperature drop as well. Not a significant drop just cooler temps. Which is what I read so nobody come for me! Lol I'm very curious to see if it's going to make a difference at all. Being consistent with covering it and uncovering it twice a day for 42-56 days without missing a single day is going to be a challenge. Doable but still a challenge π
@princesspitstop Thank you for the info. I think this might work rather well. My Bedroom is the βcoldest β room in my apartment. So if I take the cacti in there since they normally are near a West facing window during the day. Well I believe itβs going to be an exciting experiment. I wish everyone participating good luck and Happy Blooming come the holidays!π€π€
@Ms.Persnickety Yay! I can't wait! Good Luck to you madam! π€π While I'm thinking about it I'm going to set my alarm to remind me. π
@princesspitstop beautiful Philodendronsβ£οΈIs pic 2 a P. Giganteum schott? I have one and it is getting crazy big. Thank you about the holiday cactus reminder. Will 12 hours be enough? Iβm lucky if I remember to cover itβ¦even for 12 hrs. I will set an alarm and π€π½.
@princesspitstop Thank you again! Thatβs too funny, cause I just set my alarm for November first, cause I would certainly forget about completely. Old scatterbrain over here!!
@Arid_oasis Yes ma'am I sure know what you mean! Schedules are not my thing!Ha! 12-14 hours will do it! Pic #2 is a McColley's Finale Philodendron π€·ββοΈ I had never even heard of them before I was gifted this one last March. It looks a lot like a Prince of Orange. I've got both and I can hardly tell the difference.
@Ms.Persnickety I'm with you. Brain fog and myself are in a tumultuous relationship.The struggle is real. π
@princesspitstop Youβre right and getting/being old doesnβt help any! I hope that I at least inherited my dadβs genes π§¬. He was still ordering clothes online at 90 ! Not that Iβm thinking that I will need new clothes at that age. His only problem was he couldnβt remember where he put his wallet, he lived in an assisted living place. And died in 2019. Iβm ever so grateful that he didnβt have to go through that Covid mess! I think Iβm going to have to start drawing clocks to tell the time. Iβve heard itβs some kind of test to determine if dementia has set in??
@Ms.Persnickety My mother had dementia near the end of her life but didn't die from that. She died from Sepsis. In 2018 and yes I agree I'm so glad that she missed all of that as well. My brain fog is due to me being 51 and my hormone levels dropping into the abyss. π It's horrible. My short term memory is shot.
@princesspitstop
Hi everyone!
Since my apartment is so small, the only place I have available for my Thanksgiving Cactus is in my utility closet.
But...that's where the hot water is so...I guess I'll leave him where he is...

@Ms.Persnickety I'm pretty sure I can draw the clock without issues. But I'm wondering what tests they're going to give kids nowadays when they get to be senior citizens? They don't know how to tell time on a real clock now!!
@princesspitstop
I volunteer for the "do nothing" part of the experiment π
I volunteer for the "do nothing" part of the experiment π
@GracedStrapwort π€£π€£π€£ Ok ππ Only 1 request, Let me know when yours starts to bloom ππͺ΄
@princesspitstop Youβre welcome! βΊοΈ
@princesspitstop I had a Thanksgiving Cactus, and the same instructions for mine to bloom was given to me by @PoisedAlbo. It definitely did bloom, but I repotted mine inside to big of a planter and it went to plant heaven. This happened last year
@SweetAzurebluet oooh you got a tortum as well!! I just love them, so unlike any other plant in my collection. And your croton is looking fabulous as well!
@princesspitstop Thanks much, you must get a Tortum. They are very unique and they are great to have. I repotted my Croton, so far no lost leaves. He gets plenty of direct sun and water.
@DreamMachine Thanks much, my dear! I have read about membersβ Crotons loosing leaves, but so far all is good. I make sure he gets plenty of sun and a moist soil. Isnβt the Tortum fabulous! π
@BabyChia44 You are so welcome! I can't wait to see if this really works! π
@DreamMachine #brunchataudreys Has been going on a little over a year. The founder unfortunately left Greg about six months ago and thanks and Joy kept it going after most of the members left . Sorry Joy couldnβt find your user name. Itβs great because we now have a new gang though I miss the crew . @princesspitstop How in the world is my Christmas cactus going to breath ? Iβm down on trying and love your display of plants. Iβm still waiting for my Jewel orchids to bloom but theyβre just not ready. Plus itβs 7:00 and dust here the only other person I know is @CourtlyKingfern whoβs in the same boat .
@BabyChia44 Would you look at that! Yes a false Christmas Cactus is the same as a Thanksgiving Cactus. Same plant different name. Red blooms too!! When I got mine last year they didn't have red which is strange because they were sold during the Holidays. You'd think that there would be some. Only hot pink and white.
@Ms.Persnickety Oh you better practice on those clocks I remember how offended people got when I worked for doctor when they had too. So to avoid all that stress I tell myself at least once a week how it goes π€·ββοΈ
Good evening #brunchataudreys !! I canβt wait to see how the Thanksgiving cactus experiment turns out. Iβll remain in the control group. Life is a little too crazy right now for me to keep up with with trying to remember to cover and uncover everyday. I donβt get home at the same time every night, so Iβll just adjust the timers on the grow lights.
@BabyChia44 Shorter days and cooler temperatures are what normally triggers them to set buds. I have one that just put out more new leaves. I fertilized mine 1 last time in September. Hopefully mine will follow their usual routine and bloom close to Thanksgiving!
@BabyChia44 That's so cool how that happened! I love propagating. It's so satisfying when they grow after you rescued them and then they bloom so soon? I got mine last year and as soon as I brought it home they dropped their blooms and never bloomed again! That's the main reason I wanted to try this to see if it was going to work for me. π
@SweetAzurebluet Mine neither second year but itβs going outside next year . Forgot Croton itβs ticking me off indoors π€¬
@ILoveMyPlants π whatβs your Croton, not doing, thatβs make you angry!?
@BabyChia44 That's awesome! π
@BabyChia44 Good for you Iβve been feeling old lately to do props π€·ββοΈ I feel like might not make it to see any come to fruit which may just be stupidity on my part at 58 . @Sweeta
@SweetAzurebluet Hi Harriet my croton is doing okay after a year itβs producing a few leaves. I just have so many others to tend to I want to put Petra outside and see what she does. Hubby works with a contractor who gets the cream of the crop and really likes him so Iβm getting some bigger guys to tend to now . And thereβs the other 54 in an east only window house. Petra will be happy there.
@ILoveMyPlants I love your Fairy garden ππ I'm 51 so I've only got 7 years before I have to stop propagating?!?! NOOO βΊοΈ I understand not having the energy but have never heard of being too old! Besides 58 is the new 48!
@princesspitstop Ha I feel older than old dirt and have started a notebook on my plants for my daughter. I started living hard core at 12 due too lifeβs circumstances so I can only pray she will follow through I have so many plants that need attention every 3 to 4 days. Iβve been trying to propagate my brasil for her for 2 months no roots π€·ββοΈ . I just pray she doesnβt let them die. Thanks for the positive vibes π
@ILoveMyPlants Deb I'm so sorry. You were so young to deal with anything life could have thrown at you.These days I'm too old to live like I ain't got the common sense God gave me. π I'm at peace these days. I'm sure your daughter will take good care of your plants knowing how much they mean to you.
@princesspitstop
I promise to let you know! Thanks for doing the experiment. I have always wondered if it worked. My grandmother swore by it, putting her cacti in the Cole bin for complete darkness and cooler Temps. Her cacti were always beautiful π

@GracedStrapwort I'm going to have to find a new spot for it I just realized. My husband got up to get his clothes out of the closet and turned the light on. Turned it off then forgot something and went back in there and turned it on again. LOL Come on dude! The cactus is sleeping in there! Hahaha Oh good it worked for your grandma! I can't wait to see what my guy does! π₯°
@ILoveMyPlants You are a spring chicken! and @BabyChia44 as well! Talk to me after you turn 70!! Btw Iβm in FL as well. And I am in on the experiment with my Christmas cactus starting in November!! Oops, I forgot to add @princesspitstop to the list of spring chickens π
π€£π
@BabyChia44 Wow, yard work in Florida, Naahh not so much for me, no matter how βyoungβ I feel. But I agree with you age is actually just a number. However Iβve never been this old before and life didnβt come with instructions. Even if I ever had a manual I would have misplaced it a long, long time ago!
@BabyChia44 You could just as well have recycled it??π€£π
π€£π€£π
π
@Ms.Persnickety @BabyChia44 The power of life is in the tongue! If you say "I'm sick and it's getting worse" you surely will. Or "I'm old and my body is breaking down" guess what? Lol It's all how we speak to ourselves! Now take up your mat and walk! ππ It's so easy to speak negative things onto myself but much harder to speak life. Weird right?
@BabyChia44 Anytime βΊοΈπ
@planthoe40 My place isn't much bigger than yours! I know what you mean about the grow lights. In the morning I'll turn them on and where one of them is set up it shines directly into the bedroom right on my husband like AND ACTION! π€£ He's all please turn that off it's shining directly in my eyes! So my props always get a later start than the rest of the crew. βΊοΈ
@ILoveMyPlants Oh my, is that a Dracaena!! Such a beauty, I have one too! I see great minds, think alike as I always tell @princesspitstop, we love the same plants too. Here is my Dracaena!
@SweetAzurebluet I love Dracaena so much. The shape and color and their stalk! I want to try to propagate one of mine but I don't want to risk anything happening to my first rescue Dracaena.
@princesspitstop I donβt blame you! Is there any plant, that you and I donβt have together! ππ Maybe looking at a YouTube video will ease your mind. I didnβt know you could propagate them! I didnβt know mine, was going to grow so large. I donβt have space for another one
@SweetAzurebluet A Tortum! πI'm running out of space too. While out there feelin' free buying plants all year I forgot that they were going to grow. Lol It's supposed to be pretty easy. That's what scares me lol you just cut down the stem a few nodes and put it in water. And the other part grows new leaves! Crazy right?
@princesspitstop Are you saying, you have a Tortum or maybe buying one? If not, itβs time to get on board! π
@SweetAzurebluet I'm saying I don't! They are so cool looking! π I need to get my act together! Ha!
@planthoe40 Your plants look happy though! π There were times in my life that I didn't even have that! We're both blessed that we have a roof and a locked door right? You've got it decorated cute π₯° it looks homey ππ
@princesspitstop π
@GrowMyPretties I swear I thought I messaged you back last night! I'm glad you're joining in on the experiment! When my alarm went off early this morning I was confused until I realized that it was my reminder to take it out of the closet lol How cute you got little buds already!! I've heard that some people are already getting them! I can't tell the difference on mine if some of them are blooms or new segments growing. Time will tell! π
@princesspitstop Haha!! I added a little message to my alarm so Iβd remember. My Thanksgiving cactus only grew (and grew like crazy) for only a month ish. Is that different with yours? Anyway, the flowers buds should be pointy looking, like soft triangles at first. Hope this helps! And thank you for the lovely comment!
@GrowMyPretties My alarm went off on my way home from the grocery store. I got home, put the food up, sat down, checked my phone and went "Oh π©!!" Lol I forgot to bring mine inside Haha! My goodness. What's it going to take? π€£π€£π€£
@GrowMyPretties Thank you for the explanation! I tried to Google it but wasn't getting a good picture. I'm not sure about growth. I had them planted in 2 separate pots and neither one was growing so I replanted them and put them outside under my patio where there was bright indirect light but no sun on their leaves and they started growing segments. I think might have had them in soil that was too chunky. Too much chunk and not enough soil. They were surviving and they looked fine just weren't growing. Strange right?
@princesspitstop That is so interesting. Itβs amazing how the same type of plant can be so different for other people. I think mine gained 11ish segments in early summer. Grew faster than my pothos for a month. Anyway, I am so excited for flowers!! π
@GrowMyPretties is this the beginning of a bloom???? π€― It looks different than the segments or maybe I'm wanting some so bad. I circled it since it's so tiny π€£ it's the little green ball. π
@princesspitstop Itβs a little hard to tell because itβs so smoll, but it looks like one because itβs decently circular!!β
@GrowMyPretties I'll keep my eye on it. ππ
