Helloooo planty people 🌿💕 It’s Wednesday morning at #TheWateringHole here at #brunchataudreys , I’ve knocked over three plants and walked into a wall once, BUT ITS OKAY. I’ve found a new podcast that I’m really enjoying, so while I’m cleaning up after myself I get to nerd out listening to a nerd talk about plant care. @princesspitstop recommended this one to me: The Houseplant Coach by Veronica Oh Happy. And that got me thinking, do you all have any favorite plant podcasts, or online resources that you go to for plant care? It’s such a fine line between misinformation, basic care, expert knowledge. The host of the podcast I recommended kind of reminds me of @SuperbRaspfern , not with AS much experience as Shannon, but she’s very curious about the whys and digs deep into the science.

I got a surprise day off today so I am puttering around my plants and excited about some mycorrhizae inoculant I have coming today. Here’s some of my babies getting a drink this morning!

1️⃣ this beast calathea fasciata
2️⃣ tradescantia nanouk
3️⃣ calathea makoyana
4️⃣ calathea ‘Freddie’
5️⃣ podcast recommendation

How are you all doing today? 🫶🏼🌈 Anything new in your oases? Anything flourishing and thriving or are they settling down for the winter?

@DreamMachine

Hi Brunchers!
Just a quick hello...
Hope you're having a swell day 😊
@DreamMachine

Speaking of Shannon @SuperbRaspfern...
The last I heard is that she's off social media for a month because her family is moving.
Has anyone heard the latest??
We miss her! 😢 ❤️
@CutePolypremum good morning Joanie ☀️ I hope you have a lovely day 🌈 🌿
@CutePolypremum That's the last I heard from her too. Maybe her ears will be ringing and she'll be notified that we're talking about her. Lol
@CutePolypremum I saw that she got a “best answer” sometime this week or last, so I know she’s there, but I can only imagine how much work she is doing moving and setting up her plants in the new place. I think she said she would most likely not be around much, if at all, during November!
@TidyTigerpear I was listening to an episode of this podcast (The Houseplant Coach) and came across this part in ep #296 and it totally made me think of you with your Hoya with the one stem completely white. 🥹🥲🥰
#brunchataudreys Hello everyone! My Schultz’s Cactus 🌵 Plus Liquid plant food arrived yesterday, so I hope to take care of some of those fertilizer reminders in the next few days. No time for plant chores this AM. I am attaching a picture of my new baby snake 🐍 popping out from Esther , my work bird’s nest snake plant. Who doesn’t love (plant) baby pictures!
Hello All @DreamMachine Nadia I get my expert advice from you guys. I do watch some plant people on TikTok. @SweetAzurebluet my plant mail came today and it looks better in person
@DreamMachine Listening to podcasts while piddling around my plants is my jam!! I piddle you putter 🤣
Podcast - Plant School Podcast is more beginner friendly. I like how she picks a house plant per episode and tells you EVERYTHING you ever wanted to know about it.
Growing Joy with Maria- is another. She's also on Instagram. She talks about everything from pests to hydroponic gardening. Nadia, you are the Calathea Queen!! 👑💖 Tell me again what soil you use for them because I'm seriously about to change the game. Loving the Tradescantia!! I have a Spider Wort and a Zebrina oh and the purple wandering dude or whatever it's called. Lol The Zebrina's stems are so fragile. I had it in a hanging pot over the sink in the kitchen because I was watering it. A little later my husband said oh did you see the stems that I broke off of your plant? Of course I had! Lol he's lucky they root so quick! Haha seriously though it's always my fault I put the plants in the line of fire! 🔥😜 Okey dokey I don't know what order these pics are going to come out. So any questions let me know. OMG UPDATE!! My Thanksgiving Cactus has little blooms ALL OVER IT!! 🎉🎉🥰
@RefinedSandwort Joy brought up fertilizer. What kind of fertilizer do you use and with 200➕ plants how you fertilize monthly.
@FitBrowallia Jonchel!! Your watch chain is AMAZING! 😍 Over the next few days he'll start to stretch out. Put him in a sunny window and don't let it dry out all the way 🥰 I love him!!
@FitBrowallia love that watch chain! You are the plant mail queen!🫅
@princesspitstop me tooooo
@RefinedSandwort no you are - everyone gives me so much great advice to keep theses babies alive
@RefinedSandwort Oh Joy look at that precious little guy!! 🤩 I finally separated my Birds Nest but didn't plant them in separate pots. I will once I move. I've got a lot of plants to move so the more I can consolidate the better!
@FitBrowallia Good Afternoon! 🌞 WOW! Your Watch Chain is gorgeous!! Congratulations 👏🏾 my dear! Now make “Baesil” and myself proud! We are rooted on you and your beautiful Watch Chain!! 🥰
@SweetAzurebluet thanks Harriet
@FitBrowallia You’re welcome!
@RefinedSandwort oh my goodness that is the cutest 🐍 pup I have ever seen 🤩🙀
@FitBrowallia WOW, what a watch chain!! Can’t to see him stretching 🙆 up 🙀😍
@princesspitstop tradescantia ARE such fragile stems. I literally did the same thing last week repotting this purple zebrina that I don’t know the name of (can you imagine I had it in a 2” pot before? 🤪I’m sure it’s thinking AHHHHHHH) But they sure do root lightening fast!

My mix for calatheas and a lot of my plants is 1/3 coco, 1/3 perlite, 1/3 orchid bark. BUT I’m currently researching perlite right now and I might be switching to something else. I’m curious is perlite really does have lots of fluoride and is also a fluoride magnet, and then hangs out near my calatheas roots? And calatheas are rather well known for not liking fluoride! Hmmmn. I’ll update if I make any decisions on that. I might be switching to vermiculite.

Here’s a pic of my substrate so you can see that it’s really chunky and airy, but that coca is great at moisture retention.
@FitBrowallia I was using Miracle Grow Succulent food (liquid) but have almost used it up. I will be transitioning to the Schultz’s I ordered. We have some old regular Miracle Gro concentrate We use on non succulent/cactus plants such as our peace lilies. I don’t fertilize anything monthly except my Thanksgiving cacti from about April through September. I have been using regular Miracle Gro for them. I think my hubby might stage an intervention if I get any where near 200 plants!
@RefinedSandwort my kids keep saying that one day they will walk in the house and it will be like walking through the forest 🌳. That could be true, I’m trying not to do it. Thanks
@DreamMachine what kind of orchid bark is that. I either get it and it’s too small or it’s to big for the plant roots.
@DreamMachine I can’t wait either. It’s so different
@FitBrowallia I get this kind. It’s orchid potting mix so it’s pine bark mixed with perlite already in it https://a.co/d/bXbf1OB
@DreamMachine I’m getting this one https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B005AWXHVM?psc=1&ref=ppx_pop_mob_b_asin_image because it has charcoal. It’s had big pieces of bark
@FitBrowallia I use that brand! I mix it with succulent soil and use it on all of my plants.
@DreamMachine ok check it out. All I have is this. What do you think about me mixing some of this in with the Orchid Bark, Perlite, charcoal and succulent soil for more water retention? For my Calathea and Green Prayer plant.
@RefinedSandwort oh my goodness that 👶🏻 🐍 🪴 is sooooo cute! 🥰 I love seeing the new growth pop up like that 🙌🎉
@FitBrowallia Jonchel!! That is one handsome plant!!! So full and healthy looking 🙌👍👏
@princesspitstop yay 🎉 for little buds on your Thanksgiving cactus!!! All 3 of your plants look wonderful! 🥰
@princesspitstop ok false alarm on the perlite! LOL. I just read a scientific study that showed even if perlite had high levels of fluoride in it, they would drop quickly to non toxic levels within the first few waterings, [if the first few waterings you do are top waterings that is, so it gets flushed out.]

That succulent soil doesn’t look too bad! and omg I forgot I put like 5-10% charcoal in mine too whoops!! 😬 🤣
Forgot my study pics
@DreamMachine so when you use that Mulctun orchid mix, do you add more perlite? And you add coco coir to it as well? Just want to make sure I’ve got it right 🫡
@DreamMachine interesting regarding fluoride. I checked with our water district and they do not add fluoride 😮‍💨
@FitBrowallia that one looks great! Lol it looks pretty much exactly the same as my diy mix! Just a note for @princesspitstop and anyone else who might be in a drier place—you might need more of the coco or peat in yours than I do
@MariansOasis I use it like it’s already half and half! So as I’m making my mix I use a quart container and scoop one quart of coco for every two quarts of that bark-and-perlite orchid mix!
@princesspitstop @MariansOasis I forgot that once I had made about 9 quarts of mix I remembered I wanted to finish a bag of charcoal so I put one quart of horticultural charcoal in too
Good afternoon all at #TheWateringHole I kinda like that name for our gathering and may even prefer it since Audrey isn’t hosting brunch any longer. I think the Watering Hole is more accessible, especially for newcomers. So I joined 👍 #TheWateringHole 👍. 2 members so far lol 🙌. @DreamMachine I too started the day knocking over a plant 🙈. I thought I hung the Krimson Princess OVER the rod but evidently not, as it came crashing down onto the wayetii below 😩😱🙈. Regarding my go-to for plant care, I deep dive Google plus have a couple of old fashioned books 📖 that I will refer to as well. My mom was a great resource, a real expert on African violets, ferns, ivy, Christmas cactus, and just about any outdoor plant there is! Sadly she passed a few years ago at the ripe old age of 99 yo! And she was still gardening 👩‍🌾 up until about 6 months before she died. Tbh I’ve never listened to a podcast only because none have been recommended to me. So now that’s changed and I’ll tune into The Houseplant Coach🙌
@DreamMachine got it, thanks. 🤗
@DreamMachine @MariansOasis Make that 3 members!! 🥰
@princesspitstop @MariansOasis I’m glad you feel the same way! I like #TheWateringHole too as it seems like it better describes what we do these days!! It’s a laid back hangout chat spot!
@DreamMachine That Succulent potting mix is totally different than Succulent soil. It feels pulverized. The regular succulent soil that I use is a lot chunkier. So I don't know I guess I wouldn't hurt to add some into the mix.
@DreamMachine @MariansOasis @RefinedSandwort I like that it's a Joy-ism 💚😁
@princesspitstop it looks like mostly peat? If so it should work like the coco in my mix 🙌🏼
@MariansOasis I love hearing about your mom 💕 She sounds similar to my mom’s mom 🤗 What a 👸👩‍🌾
@princesspitstop yay! Up to 3 🤪 🤣
@princesspitstop I’ve joined #TheWateringHole, too. Like the name. I guess I’m sort of showing my age, but I tend to prefer reading articles on plant care. If I forget something, it’s easy to go back and review. I have utilized you tube videos to see how to propagate. I often go online to look up information on my plants or to answer questions.
@RefinedSandwort Woohoo 4 members!! 🥰🙌🏼🌿

I might listen to podcasts, but I LOVE reading articles too. I can’t believe I forgot to include this one, but have you ever read articles at https://www.foliage-factory.com/plant-care ? I love them because they break things down into easily readable points, give you an estimated reading time at the top, link other articles, AND site their usually scientific or education based sources at the end!
@DreamMachine will have to check it out!
@RefinedSandwort really in-depth care guides for tons of different plants too. They sell plants, so whatever plant they’ve ever sold they have a care guide for. I just randomly found it and use it often more!
Your Nanouk is beautiful! Mine suddenly started to get sick last month, no idea why. I’m currently trying to prop the few stems I was able to save.
@BabeVila thank you 😊 But oh noooo poor baby! 😭 I’m glad you were able to save some and they root so fast but that sucks!! 🥺 Were there any visual clues?
