Beware unscrupulous plant sellers!
#unscrupuloussellers
It's so sad that there are sellers who sell unrooted cuttings in 2" pots, claiming it's a plant. Shipping plants in poor conditions, i.e. soaking wet, improperly secured plants and soil. Etc,etc. I feel this could help, especially planty newbies so they don't purchase half dead plants!
We've all had bad experiences, so I hope it's ok if I created this hashtag so others can be aware of unscrupulous sellers. @RJG #happyplants #plantsmakepeoplehappy #plantaddict #newplants #greggang #greggers

I feel this. In the fall, I ordered a 2" String of Dolphins from the Succulents Box through Amazon. It came beautifully packaged and it was a gorgeous little plant. It started to rapidly decline though, and I was taking care of it properly. It was even in a terracotta pot. I pulled it out and noticed it barely had any roots, if at all! I really expected more from a bigger seller like that, especially when the description said it was fully rooted. Here's a picture of the SOD in question 😪
Absolutely! I agree with you (and #gregteam feel free to take this comment down ifbits against guidelines!)
Here's the my most recent #plantsellerblacklist story.
@Sassylimey - I used that hashtag cause yours is hard to spell when I haven't finished my coffee 😂
HERE'S MY STORY:
I received on Tuesday a BIG plant order of from an Etsy seller in San Diego. (Over $100 of plants!)
Why they shipped ALL my herbs, plants, & succulents completely soaked in water on a Friday with 2-day priority shipping, so that I got them 4 days later in Los Angeles still totally saturated in water is beyond me! 🙄 😖
While they did do a decent job of wrapping the individual plants they didn't do a good job of packing them neatly with cushoning in between each.. BUT the biggest blunder was the package was NOT marked fragile and there weren't "this side up" arrows on the box. 😡
As a result my RARE Aeonium Noblie is very scarred, my Nanouk has a torn leaf, and my Echeveria red plush plant was badly bruised. 😢
Surprisingly the verigated string of buttons was okay. 🤷🏽♀️
After unpacking and emergency removing the succulents plants from their drenched pots, I inspected all the plants and realized they had mislabeled or mis-identified the
Pachyphytum Oviferum ( one of my favorite wish list plants I have yet to collect).
What they sold me was a Graptopetalum amathystium - this is a common error with amateur or careless sellers.
However, the picture they showed on the listing was indeed the Pachyphytum Oviferum aka 'Lavender pebbles.'
Total negligence! 🤬
Do NOT order plants from "Dose of Succulents" on Etsy (link below) unless you want to get incorrectly ID's plants, that honestly don't look that great , many have misshapen leaves, plus there's a chance you'll need to do emergency root rot repotting on arrival! 😑 🚫

I'm lucky I know how to save plants, but beginner plant people need to know who NOT to buy from!

@KillerTofu It’s sure looks healthy
@clairsheart I know! That's why I was so shocked!
@roxyvivien it was your post earlier that inspired me.. it infuriates me when sellers pull these kind of underhanded practices.
You're an expert @sarahsalith 😉
It's difficult to have to "bad mouth" anyone, but I just can't stand for injustice and unscrupulous people taking advantage of others, all to make a buck 🥺

Also got the #plantshopreview too to help let others know of the good, the bad, and the ugly sellers out there.
I’m glad y’all started this thread, its definitely useful! I’m sitting over here about to open an Etsy case tomorrrow on a seller because she wouldn’t ever respond to messages, she finally said she was shipping Monday, she uploaded a pre shipment tracking number, said it’ll be here by Thursday (yesterday) . Well post office doesn’t show they ever received the package, and she closed her Etsy shop down. So now I’m like, what is going on? I don’t think my Albo is ever arriving🤦♀️
Oh no @Propa that's really awful. I hope you can at least get a refund. Ugh people can be so evil. You don't deserve to be treated that way Jessica. 🥺😍
@Sassylimey thank you 🥺 I’m about to throw my hands up at trying to even buy this plant. I got one for Xmas, and I knew it just wasn’t going to make it. Seller refunded half the money. Now this one isn’t even going to arrive I don’t think. I haven’t ever seen it locally, which forces you to try to buy online, but I’m so fed up with online sellers I could scream😤
@Propa Sorry to hear your struggles 😔 I hope you find your wishlist plant!
@roxyvivien thanks girl me too! 💚 Maybe for my birthday next month I’ll try again 😂
@Sassylimey I see that comment now!
I just finally caught up on all Greg notifications now - I've been so busy with new plant potting/rescuing catching up on home cleaning since I can move better now post surgery ...
And just my luck, we're getting a heavy dose of rain tonight, so I have to move all my outdoor plants under the deck awning and finish all my repots tonight so they don't get super moldy or rot from the humidity.
Fun times! 😬😕
I gotta post a pic of the state of the mint plant I got... It's ridiculous!
I'm thinking of just throwing it away. it's yellow/browning on mutiple stems/ leaves and it had mealybugs and other pests all over it!
They might have been dead bugs from a pesticide, but it was still gross... I quarantined it and sprayed it down with alcohol - I don't know if it's worth saving.
I could just buy another mint?!🤷🏽♀️
Thoughts?

@Propa What plant is it? I'll keep an eye out! And if you see a cute (and REAL) Pachyphytum Oviferum let me know!
@roxyvivien thank you!🥰 Monstera Albo 💚 it’s so hard to find a decent plant that’s not damaged or going to cost an arm and a leg 😂 and I will absolutely keep an eye out for your Pach Ovi!

Thank you for this thread. I currently get most of my babies from Etsy but it’s scary. I look for a 4.8+ star rating.
I say that… and I was the VERY FIRST BUYER on a new Etsy shop a few months ago. She tried really hard but most of my propagations died in the freeze even though I paid for a heat pack. No refund. Sigh.

This is why I check every new plant. I do the "tug test" to see if it comes out of the soil easily. If it even feels loose, I'll unpot and inspect the roots to determine if it needs to be rooted out more or is ready for my preferred medium/substrate.
I've found my loss % or problems are way lower than doing nothing and letting the plant acclimate for a month, only to shock it again by repotting and it have to reacclimate.
Unless it's a trusted seller, I immediately unpot and handle the plant as necessary, every plant, every time. At most it may wait a month if it appears healthy and in good soil.

@Propa what was the name of the shop? I’ve been seeing a lot of Albos on Etsy with absolutely no reviews but it says they have sold a bunch in the past few days. Total scam.
@Megongreg I searched for months. They were TheHappyPlace46 but I’m not sure if they have anymore at the moment or not 🤔
@Propa wow I’m surprised Etsy hasn’t done more to stop this type of stuff from happening
@Megongreg sorry I gave you the wrong name. TheHappyPlace46 was where I got my great Albo they were AMAZING sellers! GlassBeadDaisy was the bad seller that shut down her shop and ghosted 😑 I’m surprised Etsy doesn’t do more to stop this practice too
Yes I saw glassbeaddaisy that’s the exact account I saw. She had a few reviews for beads and bracelets and all of a sudden was selling a ton of albos and had no reviews for those I knew something was up but I can’t believe Etsy slowed that to happen. She probably made so much money she was selling a lot of them @Propa
@Megongreg yes!!! I thought well maybe they’re getting into the plant business, we all start somewhere. So I really knew something was up when she didn’t reply to messages. After 3, she said ok I’m sending it Monday then allow 3 days for shipping. She uploaded a tracking number but it never made it to the post office. So I filed a claim with Etsy and they immediately refunded it. I’m sure they did that with the hundreds of purchases she scammed people out of. Can’t believe it🤦♀️
@Propa thats terrible at least Etsy gave you your money back I’m glad to hear that
@Megongreg thanks me too🙂 I think I’m probably going to stop shopping on Etsy for awhile. There’s got to be a better place for plants out there
