Save money on plant ties with stockings
Spring is coming, new growth is happening and those climbing plants will need staking.
I know a lot of us live on fairly tight budgets, so anything that helps save πͺ and recycles is a good thing. π€
Recycling your stockings/pantyhose, ladies, share them with your guys. π§¦
Cut into strips stockings make great ties to attach plants to poles etc. The stretchiness of the stocking makes it safe and pliable as a tie and won't damage your plant. You can also use them to tie plants in your yard to stakes! #tipsandtricks #plantingonabudget #happyplants #plantsmakepeoplehappy #plantaddict #greggang #greggers #gregcommunity #wearegregory #sarahsgrove

Hi Stacey, they came in yesterday. I did make a post but here's some pics. H. Burtonaie, H. Krohniana Snow Caps/ Silver; and H. Rosita π₯° I'm up to 14 different Hoyas now ππ @FirstCanna β€οΈ
Oh wow I'm jelly lol @FirstCanna β€οΈ
@CorvidFan yes I did make that trellis. I used a wire coat hanger and bent it into shape. Then I took rope (I bought a ball of rope at Home Depot) and hot glued it to the wire. It was difficult to bend. I'm now using 12ga copper wire and bending it into various shapes for my Hoyas!!
Neither have I Rosie π€ͺ but I had a pair of knee highs that I cut down into strips!! π @FormidableCacto π₯°
Yes Leslie they sure do, used them on my tomatoes plants for years @SwiftMedeola π₯°
@Sassylimey , me too. I suppose I can blame my NOT growing tomatoes this year, on NOT having any more tights! Lol, although I did throw (literally) some lettuce seeds out yesterday. Similar to Jack in the beanstalkβ¦. old fabric pot, old soil, and old seeds. Kind of late to be starting, but I thought I need to get rid of this stuff! π Fingers crossed, I can still get some micro greens.
@SwiftMedeola it's still too cold up here to try and start a garden, hopefully the end of next month!!
@SwiftMedeola @Sassylimey Leslie, why are you not growing tomatoes this year? To both of you, we are all in zone 6 as you know. When I lived in Toledo it was 6a and I couldnβt plant until May 23. When I moved to Dayton area I was pleased to have a first frost-free date of May 15 (6b). I follow that every year. The week before I get what I will plant at my favorite nursery (Stockslagers in New Lebanon) and let the plants harden outside on the patio for a week. Then the closest weekend to May 15 I start by planting the tomatoes and peppers and marigolds in the raised bed. Subsequent weekends I plant the annual flowers, mostly vinca, and seed the zinnia bed. This has worked since 1985 when I got married and moved here to Brookville. Last year I also planted garlic and asparagus that my brother started in Toledo.
Jane, I start getting ready for my garden at the end of April, this will be year 8 that I have done straw bales for growing my veggies. https://strawbalegardens.com/store/balebuster-five-bale-box-with-100-organic-formulation/ @AC73LoveCats β€οΈπ₯°π
@AC73LoveCats , wishing more than anything, I could grow more, (esp. tomatoes and peppers) but simply, my right hip should have been replaced last year, and my left not much better. I inherited extreme osteoarthritis from my mom, and I now know how she felt all these years π. I walk, exercise, and push myself amap, especially gardening. None the less, my yard and all it encompasses is my sanctuary. All my established perennials take up most of my time. My hydrangeas need to be deadheaded, my Caryopteris, nursed back to health, my roses surveyed, (and thatβs just today) πand oh my goshβ¦..the weeds! My summer seedlings need to put planted in their baskets, but I have no where to put them. (Although I have been putting sone of my pots and baskets on my daughters bedβ¦,,she would be livid, but she is away at school) . Iβve got Dahlberg daisy, Felicia sky blue, carnation clove drop, Lavatera, Angelonia, and scabiosa seedlings, that all need to be planted in their respective homes. Now, Iβm not sure if I should have started germinating so earlyβ¦..just waiting on the warmer weather to catch up. Attached, some of the tomatoes I planted in previous years. Found some zinnia seeds. I order primarily from Summerhill seeds, and they always send me some freebies. If you would like, I would be happy to share these zinnias with you, as I honestly have no room. I took a couple of the Luminosa, and might throw them in a pot. Your zinnias were beautiful and full, so you may not want or need anymore. If so, just let me know. πΈ and thenβ¦β¦..there are my houseplants π. PS. I need to plant some garlic. Is it easy? Can I do it in a pot? L
@Sassylimey Hi Sarah, now I remember you shared last year about planting with bales. I get it, preparing to plant, at end of April. My husband does a lot before I actually plant. He rents a rotitiller, or finds someone who rotitills, and turns over the dirt in the tomato garden and the side of the house where I plant zinnias. He tills fertilizer into both beds. He puts a biodegradable black tarp kind of sheeting over the tomato garden to keep the weeds out. Wow, is that ever necessarily! Fortunately when the zinnias come up, as long as I plant them the first weekend I plant, they stay ahead of the weeds there and block out the sun for them. (I have waited too long and the weeds try to take over.). I didnβt mean to try to tell you and @SwiftMedeola what to do! Just to emphasize how well the first frost-free date has worked for me throughout my planting career.
I didnβt take that as you trying to tell us what to do, π and I hate to reference my medical issues, itβs just thatβs the sole reason I canβt plant/do anymore than I do now. I fret over my daily duties (gardening +++), now. If only I could get my husband out thereππ. Good luck to me, with that one. Anotherβ¦.π.
Have a good olβ homegrown tomato on me!

@SwiftMedeola Hi Leslie, as far as the garlic, I must admit I just do what my brother tells me. He grew the garlic cloves, gave me a bunch of different kinds and basically i just stuck them in the ground a few inches apart in the fall. Greenery has been coming up since February. I am not sure what to do next or what to wait for, and I await his instructions. I just emailed him with your questions. I can tell you it is easy to plant, but I donβt know about potting it. Also I think you will have to wait til fall to plant it. Like with tulip or hyacinth bulbs.
I would be happy to plant any zinnia seeds you wonβt be planting. I havenβt bought my seeds yet, I can plant yours along with them. My email is on my oasis. Let me know on Greg when you email me because with my new phone for some reason I donβt receive all emails. On the email if you give me a number to text, that works best for me, if it is ok with you, and I will send my address. I guess the best way to tell me you have emailed is to put it in this kind of a comment section and put in my username.
So are you now living somewhere with little outside room? It sounds like you have to downsize quite a bit in the garden area you have. You mentioned perennials, are they where you are now? I am so sorry to hear about your difficulty with gardening due to pain. I have a friend who has had a knee and a shoulder replacement and feels much better. Are you going to do that? I know the physicians encourage people to wait. I encourage the opposite because you are better able to tolerate surgery at a younger age as opposed to an older age. My mother in law waited and waited and had many years with a lot of pain that could have been helped had she had the surgery earlier. Then the complications of the surgery at about age 80 ended up contributing to her death. I donβt mean to be morbid! But I would say to think about it sooner than later. Not meaning to be bossy.
Later toward planting season here, I will be describing the experimentation I did over several years to determine which variety of tomato plants are most resistant to blight here. Blight has been most troublesome for me in keeping tomato plants healthy all summer @Sassylimey #OhioGang #Zone6ers

@SwiftMedeola Hi Leslie, I just sent and received an email from my brother, so maybe my new phone finally settled into its tasks. Just go ahead and email me and I will do so back with my address. Put something in the subject or address so I know itβs from you.
My brother said that garlic should work well in a pot because the roots are only a few inches tall. Great! I do think it is only a fall-planting type of plant, though.

@AC73LoveCats , just sent an e-mail. Uggghh, I have to wait until the fall to plant some garlic??!! I guess that means I still have to go to the grocery every week! π Thanks for all the info, concerning everything. π
@SwiftMedeola I will ask Tom (brother) about that to make sure. You must eat a lot of garlic! I love it too. I just saw your email and will answer it.
@AC73LoveCats , yes, we do β€οΈ garlic. Thanks!
@SwiftMedeola I sent you my address and phone. I am thinking of what I could send you in return. I have some croton seeds from my sister in law. I have bunches of baby spider plants, which I havenβt figured out how to send but will find out. I could also send a pothos cutting: neon, satin, or snow queen/marble queen (I donβt know which it is). Peperomia ferryrae, or philo Brasil. Silver squill. I havenβt sent any of them but will find out how. Let me know if any appeals to you.
I got your email/address. I promise u do not have to send anything in return. I offered the seeds because I saw how pretty your zinnias were, and just thought you might want to add even more!! To be perfectly honest, I donβt know much about all the plants you just mentioned. Again, my sorta greenish thumb lends itself mostly to outdoor perennials.Regardless, any and everything green appeals to me!! (indoor and out) lol
@SwiftMedeola OK, how about if I take a look at my perennials as they come up this year and see what you might like. I have a large perennial bed in front and a new small one in back. Plus a small bed of black eyed Susans and a trellis with some different clematis vines.
Thank you @GreatNinebark I'm all about repurposing and saving money π€π
Jasmine I live using old cut up stockings because they make great flexible ties and don't harm the plant
