Brownie is splitting! #lithops

This is my very first lithops. I know that this is normal, but I'm curious. How can you tell if they are making a flower or just creating a pup? Again, this is a first, and I still don't know too much about lithops.

Looking inside, I see something that looks like it could be a baby lithops.

If it was a bloom you’d probably already see it . Looks like it’s going to split for new babies.
Congratulations on your first lithops split!! I love these little babies and have a whole shelf of them. I also wear one around my neck in a little plastic dome. I agree this is splitting, not flowering. It does take a few years for most to be mature enough to bloom, not sure how old this one is
@Blueberrypie how big is it
@Hoyaobsessed @Blueberrypie thank you! Right now, I'm on vacation, so I'll have to check back on Brownie on Monday or so.
@Plants_Galore here’s the best picture I could achieve!it’s about as big as the tip of my pinky finger, and it has split once in the couple months I’ve been wearing it. He seems pretty happy about his digs so I plan to keep him until he outgrows this vessel!! Hopefully not for a while. I water him once a month #LithopsArmy #Lithops #PlantAddict #PlantsMakePeopleHappy #HappyPlants #NewGrowth #
@Catplantaddict your lithops should be fine and dandy in your absence as they require less frequent watering during winter months
You'd know if you're about to have a flower. It's different from the splitting, which is what it seems you have. The stem for a flower is narrow and would appear before the growth, the splitting phase begins.
When the flower forms, a narrow stem appears at the dividing line about 2 mm wide and about 1 mm thick. Once ready a gorgeous yellow, single danderlion-like opens. It will stay open for a few days, before it starts to wilter.
Even after the flower is gone the stem would be still there to remind you of a bloom as in some cases it requires two splitting cycles for a safe removal without pulling. Pulling can hurting your fragile plant.
@Catplantaddict Generally, Lithops need to be at least a few years old before they start flowering.
@Hoyaobsessed @Blueberrypie @Plants_Galore @Floristsdaisy @Ms.Persnickety I'm back home! The gap seemed to expand slightly, but not much else.
@Catplantaddict you can see the new one inside!!! How exciting!! 🀩
Just wait and enjoy. The opening and protruding of the new set of leaflets can take from 2 weeks to a month and then about the same time for the new set of leaves to increase in size and height.
