#PlantLimerick
In a pot lived Philodendron Dean,
A terrestrial, yet with a dream so keen.
Though meant for the ground,
In climbing, he found,
His joy, like a sailor's ship seen.
With happiness, he pushed out a bloom,
His tendrils reaching, dispelling the gloom.
In his upward quest,
He felt truly blessed,
With each petal, his heart found its room.
His shape, like a figurehead grand,
On a seafaring vessel, he'd stand.
As he grew and he swelled,
His pot almost felled,
His climbing desires, now unplanned!
In his planter, he'd soon overflow,
His dreams, like his roots, they would grow.
As he reached for the light,
His joy took to flight,
A climbing philodendron, aglow!

@UltraKoreanfir I think one of my favorite parts of Greg is we see these random posts from impromptu Home Depot runs with a bounty of with 4” exotic angel plants or the post about #motherload from a #Plantstavaganza @Boymom-plantmom online or that really stressful week someone @BabeVila indulged on some #wishlistplants or one of those times it was love at first sight for @GaryPoopins #philodendton I had never heard of but will just refer to it as a #showroomphilodendron, or marveling at a new leaf from one of @AnthuriumQueen ‘s impeccable anthuriums, or the inspirational post from @TwistedThreads when, following an uncharacteristic absence from Greg she posted again on Greg, revealing that l behind the friendly and sweet #Gregger is a soul as #toughasnails: like a steel sword that must first be forged in fire she emerged from a period of darkness galvanized, resilient and tenacious with her lone superhero sidekick Micans her courage strength and resiliency—how could you not be inspired and while today we may be posting the pictures of the of the beauty that small McDowell that we nurtured into something that would stop traffic (well me at least) in time @TwistedThreads will have nurtured the plants we gifted her, or the cuttings that are in various stages of propogation presently. Yes my favorite part of Greg is the journey we share. Sometimes it is not so much the achievement of large fenestrated leaves themselves that makes for the journey; for me it is the fact i can post an update on a plant and while some may see in the picture the fruits of of my labor, what I see is a survival mechanism. A plant that perhaps took more care of me than I did of it; for despite the uncertainty of the darkest of times, my monstera is an artifact of the time. I often think about how it cannot be a coincidence that despite all the suffering of 2023 for example, the Monstera, as an artificact is proof that I can be strong; that when the world gives me darkeness and despair, that I am strong enough to pay it back, not with darkness and despair, but with beauty and life. I lost someone who meant everything to me because the downside to loving someone and being there to catch them can perversity result in one’s self becoming an artifact for a pain that must be left behind. For whine you know someone’s truth, it’s no longer something abstract confined to their thoughts, it becomes real —too real—that now you have become collateral damage left in its wake. I was going through some of my old photos today and I realized that when we share our plants and our stories on here —.its not like it’s a fantasy football league or Reddit nonsense. When I was looking at my plants today and compared them to the old pictures I thought “I did that.” When survival becomes something that is not a fotrgone conclusion, each plant one nurtures , is like a soldier working enlisted in the cause; for if I can make this plant look so full of vigor, vitality, and beauty, well then perhaps I can endure. When you guys comment on my pictures, you make it real. And the plant has a story.. For me sharing my plants stories and progress of whatever little triumph I may have is restorative; your interested and kind comments fortify the bullwark against hopelessness when each day no longer feels like a blessing. Thank you all
@TexanExpat I'm sorry about becoming collateral damage, but am really happy for you that you are able to realize it is something that affects you profoundly and that you've found creative ways to deal with and express yourself. And, that the collective that is "Greg" can help to validate and provide the restorative part of the puzzle that helps you to heal. You are a gem!
The limerick was beautiful, the photos are amazing, the plants are a direct reflection of your soul. I know what it’s like to have your entire life crumble slowly, and also to have it blown apart abruptly, and I always think that while these crushing events could have made me bitter, hateful, and that would be understandable, I’m so grateful that they didn’t, and that I had the fortitude to choose to use my grief as a ladder to climb instead of an abyss to plunge into. You’ve done the same, and it’s inspiring me to keep moving forward through my current life struggles. Though they are nowhere near as difficult as I’ve endured in the past, it does get exhausting at times, to feel like you’re struggling to keep your head above water more than you’re floating on your back in the sun…so thank you. And I hope your journey gets easier this year. 💚
@TexanExpat Such a thoughtful reflection. Thank you for sharing and inspiring us all! Lovely plant and beautiful sentiments that I know I have felt as well. 🪴💚
@TexanExpat He is a pillowy stunner figurehead & and your poetry is inspirational. Thank you for sharing with us ❤️
But found plants and gardening one thing that helps and I had a dog with ptsd who was a rescue. We hiked the woods for hours everyday to shake the stress. He passed away about 6 months ago. He lived to be sixteen and had a good quiet life and played with as many dogs we could find in the woods everyday. I’m lucky to live near a big university with wooded trails that I can get to from my land. With lots of dog people using those trails. Plants and animals are the best healers in the world and I’m so lucky to have made that discovery for myself. Thanks for your sharing because it only confirms my belief in the healing aspect of plants and animals.
@SportyWhiskfern 🥰❤️🌱😵💫🥴🙏🪴
@SportyWhiskfern thank you for sharing. I usually keep this sentiment to myself because it can be understandably offensive to many but personally when you consider the lack of resources and support with the stigma associated with ptsd and mental health issues, cancer can be a favorable diagnosis. Everyone has to find their own way. PTSD is a lot of prolonged suffering, but I have found solace in finding meaning out of my experience. Our next door neighbor survived an attempted murder and we took in his frenchie given he was in the hospital and his recovery doesn’t really allow him to care for the dog. I am keenly aware of how traumatized the dog is and I like to think it means everything to those we encounter who are similarly afflicted when they don’t feel invisible anymore. To have so much suffering in plain sight go unseen is a compounding factor. I recently enrolled in my local master naturalism program because I have found that connecting with nature is a form of salvation. the program covers a lot of areas but I am particularly interested in learning how to teach people to take the land around their homesteads and make wildlife habitat—-bringing life, songbirds, the beauty of wildflowers and the mischief of squirrels and toads into their world. Learning how to find beauty in a world thar otherwise offers suffering I think is better than any program worth a waitlist. Not to discourage you. Whatever works. You might check out a book called the Biophyllia hypotheses and see whether turning your interests and life experience into a gift for the benefit of others might bring you peace as well.
@BabeVila thank you. I will come back to this to read again and again
@TexanExpat Ditto to your poem; I took a screenshot because I just loved it.
Wow !!!! I got every word of that and have experienced it all (the feelings I mean) and I thank you for that ! There’s so much hate everywhere this has become my haven. Tired of hate. Thanks for sharing your voice and the beautiful work you do with your plants. My son is a beautiful writer and has an amazing voice when he writes. You too have an amazing voice ! Never stop sharing. I don’t have that gift but I recognize it. 💕🤪🥰❤️🌱
@SportyWhiskfern the picture of the “figurehead” on the boat is not one that I took —I included it because I knew what a figurehead was but I didn’t know it was called a figurehead and I wanted to show how the plant, to me, looked like a figurehead. I was an English major and when I read literature the writing style or voice is certainly something I pay attention to. So thank you. Off the top of my head I really enjoyed Tom Wolfe’s books, especially A Man in Full in particular because I really like his writing style and the voice it gives. I think being authentic has a lot to do with it—/being comfortable in one’s skin through the written word so to say. The technology for dictation on our phones is so good now you might give dictation a try and see if that gives you a better voice in any writing
