🤦🏻‍♀️ I have a feeling that this will get me shamed out of the club 🫣 So one year my daughter in law gave me an air plant she made herself. It was so pretty in a nice glass ball with a pretty opening in front. You could hang it too! Well... here goes nothing... sigh... I would mist my little air plant every week making sure she was happy, I would tell her how beautiful she was, dust off her glass and such. One day the kids were over and she saw me misting my precious plant that I managed to keep so beautifully!!! That's when my son turned to my and said, " Mother, you know that's a fake plant don't you?" Needless to say my husband literally rolled on the floor laughing and crying at me! And I was the butt of some jokes for quite some time!!! 😂😂😂🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️
🙋🏿‍♀️ Hiya Plant Friend! Don't miss out on your chance to win a #PlantyBoxofGoodies in the #GregGivesBackGiveaway !!

@AwesomePlants ooh, I’m excited to read every body’s entries! This might not surprise those who know I’m not the best with succulents, but when I was repotting my lace aloes and read that you could add “sand” to the soil, I did! Potted up a bunch of babies and repotted my other aloes too. Then I read it was supposed to be large grain “horticultural sand,” not “playground sand.” Guess which kind I used? 🤦🏼‍♀️ They got so water logged poor babies 😂😭
@AwesomePlants Does, when I was a new plant parent, I shined my leaves with Olive oil count as funny! Because it really wasn't. Then years later I converted my sister over to the dark side and she did the same thing but with Coconut oil. Yes, before you ask, it runs in the family!! 😂💚
PRUNING PROBLEMS :
I don’t know if this is the funniest thing but I know that it’s the weirdest thing that happened to me. We had a big fiddle leaf fig in the solarium. It had been there for years and was climbing up into the rafters, so I decided it was about time to cut it back maybe even figure out how to repot it because the soil is very old. Because I’m a procrastinator I didn’t get around to it until I had to. The reason is that we had this infestation of rats. My house was built in the 1960s has a lot of little holes here and there and it had been raining a lot so the rats had decided to come in and get dry. Of course, we put out rat traps and my little terrier dog told me where to put them and killed as many rats as he could. We finally got rid of the rats and I thought everything was just fine until I noticed that all the leaves on my ficus were turning yellow and falling off. I panicked because I had been putting off the pruning and now the plant was in real trouble. It had been a central eye catcher in the house for years and my parents had loved it and cared for it and left it to me when they passed on. Thus I was especially feeling guilty for killing it. So I thought well I better do something quickly, and when I looked closer at the plant, I noticed it had no bark. Apparently the rats had decided that fig bark was good to eat, and they had pruned the plant down to one little stalk right in the center of the clump. So I don’t know if this is a failure on my part or just the luck of the lazy, but I got my ficus pruned by rats and it sits in the solarium today better off for the pruning.
I’ve had lots of plant parenting fails but none were funny. Either my kittens ate plants or dumped them or I was just a crappy parent 🤣
@AwesomePlants my funny plant failure was when my late snake plant down to 1 pup.
I’m not sure that any of them are funny…any of them (lol) haven’t had many! Nonetheless they hurt my heart if I fail them 😔 I left one out to freeze one night…it slowly faded away like the Wicked Witch of the West.
When I was younger (12 maybe?) I got this cute little succulent (Echeveria) during the summer and I forgot to water it for a while. I was like “Oh! I should water it!” So I did. It still looked sad so I was “Plants like being outside, I’ll put it outside!” I put said succulent outside. And forgot about it. The next day I discovered it had rained and I brought my plant inside and left it on my windowsill thinking extra water wouldn’t hurt. Spoiler, it would. My pot had no drainage and was now chock full of rainwater. With a succulent. I bet you can imagine where this went. The succulent died. Instantly 🥲
@DreamMachine oh no! I've killed my share of succulents as a new plant mom too! Thanks for sharing.
@princesspitstop I wonder if your plants were like, you're shining us with a "pressed" cousin??! 🫥😳🤣
@SucculentBE that is one determined FLF!! 🫶🏿 Thanks for sharing!
@PricklyThumb does this sum up your cat and plants?! 🤣 Thanks for sharing.
@Preciousplants1 whew! Been there as well. I was like, how do I have over 200 thriving plants and I almost un-alive a snake plant?! 🫣 Thanks for sharing.
@ProductiveRye27 I've done that as well, don't feel bad. These are the moments that make us better plant parents! Thank you for sharing.
@GrowMyPretties oh no, but it was a teaching moment. Thank you for sharing.
@AwesomePlants yes!!! He recently dumped my variegated Rhaphidophora tetrasperma breaking the pot. Luckily it is pretty established into its moss pole so I could get it in another pot. Man I love that plant and it looks like crap thanks to Bean kitty.
@AwesomePlants Now that you put it like that... Gross 🤢 Oops! 😂
@AwesomePlants I couldn’t believe that I actually killed it 🙏🏽🤷🏽‍♀️
@princesspitstop 🤣🤣🤣 if only our plants could talk!
@AwesomePlants I love my plants and I love to feed pigeons. My funny fail is I didn't think about them accidentally morphing. Came out one time to find a few of my pots had fallen off the porch, turns out, they like to come up on my little porch and they are super clumsy! Between people and the birds, I now know not to attempt to put anything on the back steps. 😐
@AwesomePlants One Failure that comes to mind was when I was about 9 or 10 years old, my aunt gave me a succulent... Well I didn't know how to care for succulents, so I watered it EVERY day!🥴Poor plant!😂 Needless to say, that poor plant died... No wonder!🫣
My dad told me that there was fertilizer in the backyard and the shed and I was begging him to get it so he told me to be good so I was good and he got it for me. I gave it to my bamboo and then two days later my bamboo died. I guess it just doesn’t like fertilizer I will not be trying again.
@AwesomePlants I’m new to the plant world this year, started 2 coleus plants from seeds this spring. Home “Marilyn” is very dramatic, but thriving- full, large leaves, taller than my table lamp, and I’m proud! But Work “Marilyn” is a different story- she’s got 2 or 3 bigger twisty branches reaching in separate directions. The pic actually makes her look better than reality. She reminds me of Angelica’s doll from the 90s show Rugrats.
For my first plant that I went out and intentionally purchased; I bought a BOP with a fake flower and went the longest time thinking it was real 🤦🏼‍♀️ I still laugh when I see them at the garden center!
@ZappyLilac84 the BEST cared for "air" plant!! 🤣 love it!!
@AwesomePlants Hey that air plant was just as beautiful as the day I got it!!! 😂🤦🏻‍♀️🫣
@ZappyLilac84 hahahahahahahahahahahaah 😂💀
@SucculentBE ❤️
@AwesomePlants This is going to be short and sweet- I made the terrible mistake of buying a plant on Amazon, not any plant but a dwarf cavendish banana tree, which are warm tropical plants and I live in Spokane Wa where it gets snowy in the winter, yes I ordered a tropical plant to myself in the middle of winter, i honestly don’t know what I was thinking🤦‍♂️
@AwesomePlants this has been happening since I got the app- I go to reply in a comment, hit send, and it does nothing. I have to hit Undo, then copy/paste after backing all the way out to my own profile. This time, twice. Is this a known bug?

On to the fun stuff. This isn't My biggest fail, but it is my plant (now) so I'll count it.

My father loved exotic plants and his crown jewel was the boojum tree. Google it if you're overly curious, but imagine the ugliest, angriest shrub possible and that's our guy. When my little sister and I were young, we were tasked to mowing the jungle back during the monsoon. Well, it was her turn to take on the waist-high grass and after the fact, I watch my usually stalwart father nearly cry when he discovers she'd accidentally mowed down his little baby tree, fully concealed (and unbeknownst to us at the time, she was legally blind).

Well, the very next year, that tree had quadrupled in size and become impervious to (admittedly rare) freezing conditions as well as severe drought. I don't have any 'before' pictures but here it is ~15 years later.
@LuxuryRedvein33 pfft! You're not alone! I wish they had more black friday like sales when the weather is warmer.

I just ordered like 30 hoyas because I couldn't pass up black friday plant sales and I'm hoping they arrive safely in this weather! 🫣🤦🏿‍♀️
@CactusAdjacent did that get y'all excused from yard chores after that? 😁
@ZappyLilac84 same thing, not only have I thought that my intended agava plant was a pineapple plant but I only realised that it was 100% plastic after 3 months 😑
@AwesomePlants This is a very interesting topic. Unfortunately I have had tons of plant failures, but none were funny. Except for the one time were I put a nice sized BoP on my not so wide windowsill hoping that it would enjoy better, 😱🥴😮more light. It was precariously leaning away from the window/light. And I of course was thinking that with time the plant would start leaning back towards the window. The plant however had other plans and a few days later it had leapt off the windowsill onto the floor and it along with most of the soil had made an attempt to elude me. It only took a few days more for me to realize that the plant had actually perished.
@ZappyLilac84 @Azplantchic @ToMuchPlants @AwesomePlants that is absolutely hilarious, but the bright side is none of them died 🤣😂🤣 to be fair I see live plants all the time that I have to touch because they LOOK plastic 😉 here's another fail- I thought the lemon lime dracneas in my local life-support mall had to be fake, but then my kid dropped her toy in the planter, I went in head first after it and came back with that and a broken branch that I may or may not have stuffed in my purse and is now propagating in a coffee mug 🥴
I just started collecting house plants and the funniest thing about this is is I have no clue in what I'm doing so I joined this site to get help.
Many (many) years ago my family had a beautiful rubber plant in our living room. It was gorgeous and healthy, and we’d had it for years. We started to notice a smell that we couldn’t identify. This was late spring, the weather was beautiful, the windows were open. We finally zeroed in on the location and it was the rubber plant. We never moved this plant and always watered it in place. Because of the smell, however, we decided maybe it had developed root rot and needed to be repotted. When we lifted the plant from its stand we found an Easter egg that had been sitting there for several weeks. Clearly the Easter Bunny thought he was being very clever hiding it in the planter. 🥴 From that point on our parents counted the eggs as they hid them!
@CactusAdjacent rhe worst part? I was hoping for fruits! Never trusting grocery store plants ever again!
@LegitChisme12 welcome!!! This is what Greg is all about! I killed sooooooo many plants 🤦🏿‍♀️ before Greg.
I had just started my new life as a plant parent and adopted about 5/6 snake plants. I have always loved plants, both inside and outside plants, but have struggled to find my green thumb. I was doing awesome with my new plant babies! I even brought a 2ft money tree. They were all beautiful. I found myself talking to them, even singing to them, while caring for them! It was a whole new world for me. My kids were grown & these were my way to express motherly love. Well…. One day my oldest son called me and due to unavoidable and unforeseen circumstances I had to take in HIS new babies, two kittens. I had NO idea what putting indoor plants and animals will do! I tried absolutely everything the both save my plants from the cats and cats from the plants (I was unsure if they could get sick from digging in the soil or eating on the leaves). Slowly but surely…. The cats won. 😔 Two years later and only 1 left of my original 8, cats are re-homed and I am starting over! I am starting slow, because these can be expensive when factoring in all that is needed for proper love and care. I am excited to do it though. The one I am most excited to replace, when I am finally able to do so, is my money tree! 🌴 ❤️
Today watering my baby Xmas tree and showing students. Jumping spider flies out the kids scream…. I got startled and my reflex I threw the plant across the room :(

It was the students freak out not the spider!!

I protected spider from the kids wanting to fight it and threatened detention if they tried to kill it..
My funniest plant fail was not understanding that each plant has a different watering schedule. I was a young plant parent then. I bought this BEAUTIFUL monstera from Lowe’s and thought “Surely you water this each week! ☺️” I was wrong. Soooo wrong! Only one piece made it out alive 🥲😅 anyway Monty is doing well now 🤣
My worst plant fail is on Gregg for all to see. I have a Red Veined Prayer plant Ms big Leaf Smalls, that is renamed Ms. After she started sprouting small purple flowers everywhere. SO..I had just put my Monsteras on moss Poles from cuttings and so excited and knowing nothing apparently about how red Veined Prayer plants grow horizontal, but again I plow ahead and put my Beautiful Prayer Plant on a frigging MOSS POLE TOOK PICTURES 📸 AND POSTED ON GREGG ALL LOUD AND PROUD FOR ALL TO SEE! Needless to say iam sure some of you here remember that debacle and some of you i know were laughing your asses off, but very tactfully, a few of you very tactfully to preserve as much DIGNITY as i had left and explained to me basically I was torturing my plant and posting pics 📸 of the torturing.. I PLEDGED to keep the post and pics up to this day for all to see as payback which Ms Bigleaf Smalls said was fair to remind me to at least read first before the next plant 🪴 ends up tortured and on Camera!
I should get a gift 🎁 bag for just re telling this horror story of embarrassment ALONE!
@ProudRanunculus rofl 🤣 only 1 piece made it out alive.see sometimes they survive the torture we put on them!
Iam weak.
Lol
@PricklyThumb hahahahaha 🤣💀
@DaringColtsfoot Yes, he didn’t give up on me somehow 😅 I’m glad to know Ms. Big Leaf Smalls hung in there too. I’ve been having sooo many close calls lately it’s not even funny 🤣
Heh, I'm thinking about what I've gotten a fail on... this one isn't exactly funny though. I accidentally unalived ALL the plants I got from you guys 😭 It makes me sad to think you went to all that trouble to get me those plants and then they all ended up dying. I haven't planted the seeds yet, they're in the fridge... I'm hoping they'll stay viable until I plant them, cuz I have time now with winter break to take care of them instead of worrying about college.

I'd say a funny one would be that two cats now find Magpie to be a nice snack. I don't get how they haven't gotten the hint that she'll make them sick. And a cat attacked some of my cuttings while I was away at my dorm the other week ヽ(´A`)ノ
@Ms.Persnickety but somehow hearing you tell it, I bet even not funny is funny, but thank u for sharing 😘 your pain.
That's crazy..Fritz won't go near a plant unless is smells like Salmon!
Checking my finger for salmon smell
these are hilarious! the funniest failure i've ever had was one time i bought my first plant. jaw dropping i know. the plant i bought was a succulent so my dumb butt brought it in my car, put it in a mug i conveniently had in the car, put the mug in the front seat cup holder, and forgot about it. now i use the car a lot but i do not drive. a lot of other people i know use that car but for two weeks they were just not minding it untill one of my friends texted a gc saying, whos plant is this? and i said idk maybe somone put it thete for fun to avoid embarrassment. during maybe like 2 am i run back down there and take my plant. only then do i realise. there was still bananna milk i left in there for like 2 weeks. and that was before i moved to seoul. so it was really cold in that car. uh safe to say it survived two days after i took it out. heh. good thing that money didnt come out of my wallet :D
I thought that I could save a plant, even when it was dry and crispy down to the root lol 😂
@Forbes57 ahahahaha!!! We had an egg like that too one year before my parents made sure they counted before hiding them 🤣🤣
@DaringColtsfoot ooooomg 🤣🤣 I’m sorry for your pain but that is freaking HILARIOUS. 😭😂 I really love that you kept it up too, good character building!! 🥰❤️😂
@DreamMachine that was Ms Big Leaf Smalls Idea 💡
@SucculentBE your ficus is beautiful!! Mine is slowly dropping leaves. I wonder if I should just trim back to the stalk and try to start from scratch. 😳
@LegitChisme12 Welcome! And none of us ever need help! HA!!!!
Amazing ability to kill ALL plants... not a natural talent. Finally ended up with one that I was really doing well with. Not growing, but not dying... yay!!!
Time to move... realized it was fake in foam so it was absorbing the water well and I never realized. 😳😳😳
@hungryowl771 That has to be just about the funniest story I have ever heard.
@GrowMyPretties omg! 🤣 and you turned your Life around and your name even Shows ...From Plant Killer to "PLANT OVERLORD" 🪴 ❤️ 💙
