Calls to ban invasive plant making Australia's backyards 'ticking time bombs'
Residents are expected to have 'botany degrees' to know what they should and should not plant, according to the Invasive Species Council.
"English Ivy is growing over fences and walls and is choking and smothering trees and taking over ground covering bushland," Invasive Species Council acting CEO Jack Gough told Yahoo News Australia
"It's disappointing to walk down to my local Bunnings and pick up a whole variety of English ivy and then only have to walk 100m down the road and see it taking over bushland.
"I think most Australians would be horrified to know that the plants that they could go and pick up [from the local nursery] could actually be an environmental disaster."
Much as I like English Ivy and have it as a great indoor plant, itβs good to appreciate it can be an invasive species, along with other plants for sale, if left to grow wildly outside.

Yikes! I had no idea. My Ivy is one of my most favorite plants, but is actually an invasive weed in Australia.
There exist in America and the UK, some ivy covered houses, which people admire, possibly without understanding that, over time, it will ruin their homes.
Thanks Seymour!

@CutePolypremum Hey Joanie, I guess my overall message is we need to be responsible plant owners and suppliers.
I guess it's hard to argue English Ivy is an invasive species in England ?!? Ivy covered houses, ok..ivy covered bushland, not good π’
I actually know of areas of Australian native bush that is being overrun with ivy, maybe I should take photos of it π€
But if you're interested, prickly pear became a real pest and invasive species in Australia then a little caterpillar/moth was introduced to help control it. Blackberries can also be an issue and don't get me start on thistles and other introduced weeds in Australia. Anyway thanks for taking the time to look at the article and comment ππ

Same in FL - Brazilian Pepper tree, ornamental holly and so much more. In CA the ice plant used for decades to prevent soil erosion, eucalyptus trees, ivy, mustard, fennel, pampus grass, castor beanβ¦. We have to be responsible for what we plant, how we dispose of our unwanted plants and support the native plant growers. Of course thereβs a lot more to do too!! Thanks for posting. It helps with awareness.
@Seymour thank you for sharing
@MariansOasis A similar thing happened in Australia with cane toads πΈ from Hawaii to control nettles, now itβs a major pest !
