🪴PSA: Dish soap could harm your plants!! FYI
Good morning planty friends 🌿 I just want to make a quick info post on my way into work today, after seeing one of the daily “insights” on the Greg app recommending a mixture of neem, dish soap, and water as a pest treatment.
I’m not here to tell you what to do but I want to give you more information about dish soap, and then you can decide for yourself whether it is safe for your plants. Dish soaps are primarily detergents. Detergents are designed to powerfully clean oils and other lipids off of human made products, among other things. If the bottle does not say that it was made for garden 🪴 or pesticide use 🐛 , it was not designed to do so. Dish soap/detergents can quite easily strip the outer waxy cuticle from plant leaves, leaving them damaged and unprotected which often makes it much easier for pests to gain access. Since the waxy cuticle also works to prevent water escaping, 💦 using a detergent can cause extreme water loss and dehydration. Many dish detergents also contain harsh chemicals, such as sodium hydroxide, that can quite literally burn the leaves.
Plain and gentle castile soap, or using a good insecticidal soap would be a much better alternative in that pest treatment recipe. I hope this was helpful and that no one has accidentally burned their plants! 🌿

@DreamMachine Please add me 😊
@debbiedo absolutely Debbie! 🩶
Good info! Thanks Nadia! @DreamMachine
@DreamMachine thanks Nadia! I do love your post, it’s helpful and insightful. Keep up the amazing 😻 information you put out there! You’re a gem, I really appreciate it. I’m sure a lot of us do 🤭
@MariansOasis thanks Marian!! I saw this “Greg insight” this morning, and went what the HAY!! Hopefully they take it down but I’m not holding my breath 🙃
@Idplantthat aww, you are such a sweetie Rachel, thank you ☺️ Note that holidays are mostly on the other side I can get back to making some good planty 101 posts! This was a quick announcement because I saw this “Greg insight” this morning! 😲
@DreamMachine those are great notes! I know it’s so bloody frustrating to have infections and/ or bugs. 🐜 I wish I could say I never have them. But… 🤣 🫠
@Idplantthat it’s inevitable!!
@DreamMachine I've never seen this insight come up on my page before. Thank you for potentially saving plants from destruction!
@princesspitstop Absolutely! ☺️ I don’t always read the insights but I’m glad I caught this one ☝🏼
@DreamMachine yes please
@Luckeecharm1 added!
@AwesomePlants I use Dr Bronners peppermint Castile soap as well, have for years! It’s the best! I also put a teeeeny amount (3 drops of tea tree per quart of water) in there for the antifungal properties too. 👍🏼
Thank you @DreamMachine Nadia great information as always
@DreamMachine Please add me, thanks for the info!
@UberCoccoon22 will do! 😁
@Ada3 Truth! And it seems to just be continuously passed around. Added!
@Araceae yep, I feel that! It’s the same with me and isopropyl alcohol, alcohol works as a solvent on wax so while a swab of iso on a mealy can be okay, if you spray your entire plant you can also destroy the waxy cuticle. Ask me how I learned that 😭
https://youtu.be/bGr8Ls1h1dk so I’ve been watching this girl, and personally I think she’s pretty correct in her opinions of things. I have a few of the “hype” plants, I have a type two philo she talks about and I noticed the same things she’s been saying, as far as leaves and such. I think she’s worth watching…
@Idplantthat thanks for the video! I don’t often watch things like this but it’s pretty interesting!! 🫶🏼
I normally don’t either, but this girl I like. I think she touched on some good subjects, especially with Alocasia, tissue culture vs. corm. I’d be curious to see how you like doing tissue cultures. I liked that one Green World Nursery up in Oregon for the same reasons you liked that other one. Family-owned, cares about the quality and the life of the plants.
@Idplantthat I like her too!
And oh right!! Thank you for the reminder! I should go check them out first, before getting little plants shipped to me across country in winter!

@DreamMachine I try to read them all and most are good! Especially when that are about one of the plants in my oasis that I don’t see often posted about! I agree with you though, I have never thought about actually doing the dish soap thing, it makes zero sense to me! I’m glad you are on here! Thank you Nadia! Be safe this New Year! 🪴🌺
@Ponytailmom Yes, most of them have been good, this was the first one I ever saw that I thought was ill advised. And aww, thank you! I aim to be helpful 🥰 I’m glad you’re on here too!
Hope your New Years is fun and safe. 🌿🫶🏼

@ZappyLilac84 I’m happy to add you, and to hear that you like my info 🥳 ☺️
