My lucky bamboo is turning yellow. How can I save it? : r ...
Your lucky bamboo stem is turning yellow primarily due to poor water quality (chlorine/fluoride), over-fertilizing, too much direct sun, or cold drafts/temperature stress, which stresses the plant and can lead to root issues or shock. Yellowing from the bottom up often signals over-fertilization or chemical buildup, while a mushy stalk means root rot from overwatering or stagnant water is likely occurring, often requiring you to switch to distilled/filtered water and reduce feeding.
Common Causes & Solutions:
Water Quality Issues: Tap water chemicals (chlorine, fluoride) harm the plant.
Fix: Use distilled, filtered, or bottled water; let tap water sit out overnight to let chemicals dissipate.
Over-Fertilizing: Too much fertilizer burns roots and causes yellowing.
Fix: Fertilize sparingly (once or twice a year) or use a very diluted solution (1/4 strength).
Too Much Light: Direct sun burns leaves/stalks.
Fix: Move to bright, indirect light; avoid harsh afternoon sun.
Temperature Stress: Cold drafts or rapid changes shock the plant.
Fix: Keep it between 65-95ยฐF (18-35ยฐC) and away from vents/drafty windows.
Overwatering/Stagnant Water: Blocks oxygen, causes root rot.
Fix: Ensure good water circulation, change water frequently, especially in soil.
Natural Aging: Lower leaves yellowing with new growth is normal.
Fix: Trim off old yellow leaves to redirect energy.
What to Do If Stalk is Yellowing:
Is it mushy? This indicates rot; trim the yellow part and change water immediately, possibly propagate a healthy cutting.
Is it just discolored? Rinse roots, switch to pure water, and stop fertilizing for a while.
