I love columbines. I have some that came from my mother in law and she had them for many many years. They are the same color as yours and have spread to all of my gardens on their own. How did you get yours?
@AC73LoveCats that's so cool I'm assuming that means they are super durable and come back after winter is over? I started mine from seeds a bit before winter last year and I brought them in cause I had them in a pot but this year they were already getting root bound so I transplanted all 3 into the ground
They are perennials. Mine come up in late spring to early summer and are my first summer flowers. They come up at that time every year. They produce a lot of seeds too, and will spread over time even if you don’t plant the seeds yourself.
@AC73LoveCats thats wonderful news I love collecting seeds from my plants. Is there anything I should do to prepare them for upcoming winter
The flowers die back after they have produced seeds. You can cut them down then. The leaves sometimes die and then come back later in the summer, or just die back entirely, or remain after the flowers have died. Whichever way, the leaves will eventually die when it gets colder. The plant will come back next spring to early summer, produce a flower, and keep on in this pattern every year. It grows back from the roots, which stay alive underground. You could put some mulch over them for the winter if you want, like fallen leaves and such.
