โ˜€๏ธ Good morning Tuesday #brunchataudreys ๐ŸŒฟ planty people...

โ˜€๏ธ Good morning Tuesday #brunchataudreys ๐ŸŒฟ planty people!! Howโ€™s everyone doing today? I had restaurant dreams last night UGH (pages of waitlist not seated, sending tickets to the kitchen incorrectly, and tables empty but dirty) so I practically leaped๐Ÿƒ๐Ÿผโ€โ™€๏ธโ€โžก๏ธout of bed relieved that was not real life. Letโ€™s talk PLANTS ๐ŸŒฟ

Iโ€™ve made the big switch to just using rainwater ๐ŸŒง๏ธ on all my plants. I live in an area with really good tap water, itโ€™s from Bull Run reservoir and naturally soft, so ALL my ๐Ÿชด were getting tapโ€ฆand, of course, two calatheaโ€™s were ๐Ÿค’ suffering from something that I was pretending must be something else. Since I didnโ€™t want to use rainwater for two plants only (with my brain I would get confusedโ€”I much prefer finding/using one thing/method รก la Three Musketeers ALL FOR ONE AND ONE FOR ALL ๐Ÿคบ) I made the change. Itโ€™s only been a couple weeks but 1๏ธโƒฃ my pinstripe calathea has put out new growth!! ๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿผ 2๏ธโƒฃ Look at this lil baby shoot! ๐Ÿ‘€ 3๏ธโƒฃ My roseopicta โ€œDottieโ€ was the worst (probably because her leaves are the biggest and most noticeable) and since the change Iโ€™ve had no new crispy leaf tips ๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿผ

My wonderful husband hooked up our rain barrels, put in a spigot and hose, and 4๏ธโƒฃ&5๏ธโƒฃ just look at our weather forecast for this weekโ€ฆ ๐Ÿ’ฏ rain โ˜”๏ธ And Iโ€™m excited for it! rain rain donโ€™t go away, fill up my barrels, the live long day ๐ŸŽถ ๐ŸŒง๏ธ

๐ŸŒฟ Thats it for me, now I want to hear about YOU. ๐Ÿซถ๐Ÿผ Anything you are particularly proud of or having struggles with? Any over the top things you do to spoil your plants, like I found myself the other day, heating up rainwater on my stove to lukewarm temps? ๐Ÿ˜ I wanna hear it all!!

@DreamMachine Oh no girl you've been working too hard! I am so excited about the noticeable change since switching to rainwater!! I knew that it rained a lot in Seattle but never really thought about the Pacific Northwest. Heidi, Duh! Where do you think Portland is? Any old way! I've got a buttload of plants to water today which I feel like I just watered them!! By the way a buttload is an actual real unit of measurement and is equal to 126 gallons of liquid. The more you know ๐ŸŒˆ๐Ÿ˜‚ Once again, like yesterday, I'll take some pictures as I water. ๐Ÿ’ž The live long day...LMAO
@princesspitstop LOL yah, we get lots of rain too ๐Ÿคฃ Approxinately 1.5 butt loads per hour ๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿ˜‚

And I donโ€™t always remember to mark that Iโ€™ve watered right away so thereโ€™s a few plants today that Iโ€™m like, really? ๐Ÿคจ Itโ€™s been two weeks since Iโ€™ve watered you? ๐Ÿง Definitely a chopstick day!! ๐Ÿ’ฆ
We donโ€™t get a ton of consistent rain in Colorado, but when we do, itโ€™s in buckets. Do you know if itโ€™s okay to store it long term for use through the year? Iโ€™ve been thinking of getting rain barrels!
I did some rearranging of plants today along with my watering. Trying out this towel rack idea (it rotates!) to get the most use out of this huge east facing window ๐ŸŒž. I also found a new spot for my air plants ๐Ÿ’€and got some props potted up! ๐ŸŒฑ. Enjoying my blooming thanksgiving cactus as well- itโ€™s the first year Iโ€™ve gotten two blooms per leaf! ๐ŸŒบ
@MamaLinne You can store rain water for plants for up to a year. Just make sure you have some kind of lid on it to keep bugs out and of course to keep mosquitoes from breeding in there but since you're both in colder climates storage and mosquitoes shouldn't be a problem. Mosquitos go dormant during the winter and cold water doesn't grow bacteria like heat would. I usually collect up to 10 gallons of water per rain event in Texas which doesn't last me very long at all unfortunately. It doesn't rain here much.
@MamaLinne Iโ€™m not an expert, but im pretty as long as youโ€™re not using the water on edible plants, then itโ€™s usually fine. Storing it long term just increases the risk of contaminants like e.coli or something. Make sure to put a screen filter on top or wherever the water comes in to filter out larger particles, leaves etc.
@MamaLinne also OMG I love the towel rack idea and your airplants in the skull eyes ๐Ÿ˜ฑ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿคฉ Very creative!!
@DreamMachine I love rain water for my plants.
@MamaLinne as long as itโ€™s not over 110 gallons at a time! ๐Ÿคฃ otherwise the Colorado Division of Water Resources gets pissy! Like when has it ever rained enough to collect 110 gallons? Except that one time in Fort Collins when it flooded (back in the 90s) ๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿซฃ
You are going to love your results with rainwater! We switched over to just rainwater about a year ago, and got a water permit to collect more water. Iโ€™m not sure how many plants you have (I guess I could just look, ha ha), but we set up a little pump to help water! We collect 500 gallons of water for our plants. (But I have a lot of plants. ๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™€๏ธ) Shhh, ๐Ÿคซ itโ€™s not an addiction if I donโ€™t awkwardly acknowledge it. ๐Ÿซถ๐Ÿป๐Ÿฅธ
@Idplantthat whoa!!! I thought I was seeing things, over 700? That is next level impressive!!
@Idplantthat whoops, I mean . . . Thereโ€™s nothing to see here folks! Just a glitch or something. . . Ummm, do you think that worked?
@IWantThatPlant ha ha ha not a glitch! You are correct, Iโ€™ve got a boatload of plants. I have a hard time doing anything on a smaller scale. ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™€๏ธ I blame my dad; he was always a lot like this, getting a project and just kept getting bigger. ๐Ÿคฃ
@Idplantthat yep. Thatโ€™s a project alright. Iโ€™m pretty sure my local nursery is under 700 plants.๐Ÿคฉ
@DreamMachine the Calatheas can be so dramatic ๐Ÿ˜†
I have a pinstripe that despised me for 2 years. Untill it suddenly realized it should be happy. And now it is a monster in a tiny pot๐Ÿ˜… I don't know what is going on with the leaf that is 130cm (4,2 feet) tall๐Ÿ™ˆ
@MockingJay WOW ๐Ÿคฉ Thats amazing!! That leaf is taller than my daughter ๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿ˜‚ I hope my lil baby pinstripe grows up to be like yours!!
@MockingJay also what kind of substrate is it in? I zoomed in but can tell
@DreamMachine It is standing in Lechuza Pon, in a self-watering pot. I transfered it to this pot from ordinary soil about 2 years ago, after doing a rage-splitting in hopes of figuring out what the matter was๐Ÿ˜…
It has a smaller sister from the split that is also in pon, but not self-watering. They seem to be comfortable in it.

I still haven't figured out what the real matter was, they both kept giving me crispy new leaves that I could only avoid by putting them in a plastic bag and spraying them down with water every day untill the new leaves unfolded. Untill suddenly one day last year they both figured out they could produce normal leaves all on their own๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ๐Ÿ˜…. They always seemed perfectly healty otherwise though. ๐Ÿชด
@MockingJay ah, that makes sense. I havenโ€™t used that yet!

ugh the crispy new leaves are the WORST!! Stories like yours keep solidifying the idea I have that individual plants have their own personalities! ๐Ÿคท๐Ÿผโ€โ™€๏ธ ๐Ÿ˜‚
@DreamMachine indeed they do๐Ÿ˜‚
@Idplantthat Your comment of โ€œyou are going to love the results with rain water. Iโ€™m not sure what that is. I asked the internet what the average of rainwater in Sun City, AZ and the answerโ€ฆ.wait for itโ€ฆ.8.62 inches! They then gave a range of 8-10 inches.
@TooUnique1 oh my goodness, that is DRY. Is that average rainfall for a year?? We get 42+ inches a year
@DreamMachine I did try pon for some of my other plants too. Including the yellow fusion calathea, but they didn't like it as well. It was alright, but they grew better in soil. I think it might have to do with regulating the nutrients and how wet they like to be๐Ÿ˜… My gasteraloe thought it was too wet after watering. One of my snake-plants on the other hand does well in pon. So it really is a individual preference๐Ÿ˜…
Hahaha! I used to get those restraint dreams too. In the weeds, dirty tables, taking forever to ring up order, kitchen slooooooooow, & DIRTY TABLES! ๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿคฃ One thing I had one where I was walking to a bar guest & my legs were like lead. I couldnโ€™t get to him. It was insane!
@DreamMachine Yep! That was the year not dayโ€ฆI only have 20+ plants and thatโ€™s not enough to water them for a year!
@TooUnique1 holy cow! Youโ€™re not too far away from Utah, but I knew AZ could be dry, but that dry, Iโ€™m flabbergasted! ๐Ÿ˜ฏ Thatโ€™s crazy. ๐Ÿคช Iโ€™m sure you have a great system though for your plants! Itโ€™s impressive to be able to grow anything in a desert ๐Ÿœ๏ธ environment like you are in. ๐Ÿ˜‰๐Ÿซถ๐Ÿป
@IWantThatPlant oh gosh! I know itโ€™s a little next level in here. I gotta get down in my numbers for sure. Itโ€™s a little overwhelming ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿซถ๐Ÿป
@WittyWavycap45 Lol, you know whatโ€™s up!! The slow moving canโ€™t get to the people! Mine last night involved ringing in a 16-topโ€™s order and chef was mad and told me to resend it, but split the ticket into two and I could not figure out the computer and ended up sending in one extra long double 16-topโ€™s order ๐Ÿคฃ Mine always involve food I donโ€™t recognize as well ๐Ÿคช
Omg I have flashbacks of restaurant dreams!! I waited tables for 15ish years and those dreams were so stressful! So glad you got your rain barrels! I wish I could do that, but Iโ€™m in a tiny second floor apartment. Your calatheas are gorgeous ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿค—๐Ÿชด
@DreamMachine Those leaves are gorgeous! I can relate to having work dreams. I have awakened many times feeling like I shouldnโ€™t have to go to work because Iโ€™ve already been !
@MamaLinne I LOVE your towel rack hack!! Did you have to stabilize it to keep it from falling over? Some hanging pots get heavy ๐Ÿ‹๏ธ
@MockingJay whoa ๐Ÿ˜ณ that is a monster calathea in a tiny pot! Good job!๐Ÿ‘
@DreamMachine ugh I hate work dreams!! I used to be in outside sales. Weโ€™d have to record who we saw each day & before iPads, the info went snail mail to the company. My recurring dream was that I wasnโ€™t making calls or sending any info for like a year and my boss didnโ€™t seem to notice! ๐Ÿคช๐Ÿ˜œ๐Ÿ˜† Iโ€™m like ๐Ÿ˜ฎโ€๐Ÿ’จ well theyโ€™re not firing me, maybe I can catch up! ๐Ÿคช๐Ÿ˜œ๐Ÿ˜. You know blame it on snail mail!! Anyhooo, yes plants!!๐Ÿชด. Rainwater would be lovely but like @TooUnique1 it doesnโ€™t rain ๐ŸŒง๏ธ here for months at a time! San Diego averages 10โ€ per year. I wish I could use it. Iโ€™m sure Calatheas and my begonias would be happier. Iโ€™ll be very interested in what you observe the next few months! ๐Ÿ™Œ
@MariansOasis itโ€™s got a very heavy base, and I hung the heavier ones closer to the center!
@MariansOasis oh my goodness begonias! I completely spaced it my apologies! ๐Ÿ˜†

I was going to say that since you have similar humidity to mine, the main things I would check for your begonias would be how much drainage/aeration is in your soil and watering ryhthm. I feel like the recommended level of โ€œmoisture retainingโ€ is too much for our high humidity levels. My soil is 2/3 orchid bark and perlite (combined). And they say to keep the soil consistently moist but I do NOT. I let my begonias get bone dry before I water again!
@mockingjay the tall leaf looks like it's giving you the middle finger ๐Ÿคฃ
