Ok all you budding botanists 🌱, entomologists🦗, mycologists 🍄🟫 and more, what IS this? Under an outside plastic pot on redwood plank after 3 days of heavy rainfall 🌧️ Never seen this before😳. Friend, enemy or neutral? Location is coastal So California. @MariansOasis @MamaLinne do they move? There are Mealybug Destroyer larvae that look similar but are larger and move faster. I just don’t know if this if it though.
@DreamMachine they didn’t move. I tried giving a little push but nothing 🤷♀️. It’s a 12” plastic pot with drainage 🕳️ that holds a 2’ ficus tineke. Before the storm ⛈️ I moved the plant from under an overhang where it was elevated on 2 pavers, to out in the open for a good rain bath. To keep good drainage I put her on 2 boards with slight separation so 💦 could drain out. Here’s a pic of whatever these are, next to the usual lichen we get on the north side of our roof that gets washed off in heavy rains 🌧️
@SucculentBE I did squish it. It was dry inside. Now I’m really wondering if it was some kind of lichen or moss?
I have no clue! But I agree with @MamaLinne. They look like little mops, or even fuzzy slippers! 🥿 🤣 It’s terrible. I think they are kinda cute. ☺️
@Idplantthat me too!! I’m just wondering if it’s some kind of mealy bug super house/RV/armored 🚚 or something. Whatever it is it’s gone. But I’ll be checking under that pot religiously!!!!😅
@MariansOasis the tiny web-like attachments make me think it’s a cocoon. If the critter is not in there it may have metamorphed into its adult form. But not being able to see it in person I can only guess that it’s some phase of insect life, moth or wasp.
@SucculentBE yes it’s so curious (tiny weblike protrusions). There wasn’t anything inside any of them, and they weren’t empty shells either. They were full but not with anything wet, plump or squishy. So I suspect whatever it is dried up and died.

@DreamMachine @MariansOasis I have never seen anything that looks like those here in Alberta. Only thing I have to worry about getting on my balcony is the damn dirty poplar. Oh and a ton of snow.
@Araceae I’ve wondered that too, mealy bug nest. But I don’t see any pics on internet that are similar. Pics show fuzzy nests or sacs. These aren’t fuzzy and I’m curious about the little hairlike projections??🧐🤨🤷. I put a pic on Reddit. See if that community comes up with something.
