This morning, I went out and did a mini photoshoot with my plants! It's one of my favorite things to do ๐Ÿ“ท๐Ÿชฐ
I was trying to get more close-up photos this time - mainly trying to capture the mucilage on my Pinguicula primuliflora's leaves & the dew on my Drosera! They were practically sparkling this morning from the sun. โœจ๏ธโœจ๏ธ
Also snapped a few pics of my Sarracenia psittacina & another Sarracenia that I had received without an ID. Im guessing it's some sort of hybrid. Don't really want to call it a species w/o proper identification ! The psittacina are so adorable. They look like little hooks. I can't wait for later this growing season when the psittacina, leucophylla, & rubras get going! ๐Ÿฉท
Bonus pic of my pup, Howie, because he was super excited this morning ๐Ÿ˜„๐Ÿซถ
I would love to see anyone else's temperate carnivores if they've got any (vfts, sarracenia, temperate drosera, temperate/warm-temperate pinguicula) or anyone's pets!

They look awesome! I flooded the trays of those purpurpea last night after the dome blew off. Atleast half were floating in the water. Plus i learned it was a 3 year process prob to get a mature pitcher! So i was already thinking about trashing them. But after the flood it was a no brainer ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ๐Ÿ˜ค!
@TheConservator oh no!! Well, atleast you know the process for growing them if you want to in the future.
I have done a lot of research on Sarracenia seedlings, and people have actually had success fertilizing them to get them to grow faster. But, from my understanding the only safe fertilizer is MaxSea (16-16-16 seaweed based). And, its a specific amount per gallon of water. I forgot how much, I know I have it written down somewhere though.
Fertilizing them, plus skipping the first year or two of dormancy, seems to have them close to fully grown in 2 years instead of 3. Either way the process seems super rewarding! My seedlings are still doing good thankfully. Im just growing them outdoors w/o fertilizers, so mine will definitely take a whileeeee to reach maturity. Im sure the seedlings would've made it though! Different plant, but my venus fly trap seedlings had water up to the very top of the pot almost a few weeks ago. It was raining basically non-stop, and no matter how much I emptied the tray it would fill up again. But, they ended up being totally fine. Same thing basically happened with my Sarracenia too, and they're all good. Im thinking that they would've been fine if you'd put them back in the soil.
@Merranda i agree it maybe very rewarding and ill mist likely donit again. The big issue with mine was they were 25$ flr all those seeds! Just wild open pollinayed from different regions. Fl, NH,PA, and somewhere else. But they prob werent worth the effort for those. I coukdve got lucky and ended up with sone awesome hybrid strain??? But thsts a big maybe lol
And yes ive seen the max sea use for them. I believe uts 1/4 tsp per gallon. But im not pos either. I do use maxsea on other thjngs though. I give it to my heliamophora and nepenthes in their pitchers occasionally. Id have to check that mix but i believe it was 1/8 tsp per gallon in the pitchers only!
Oh and lesson learned! Never put your cp in a dish higher than the pot lol
I use a spray bottle to shoot it in the pitchers. Easy to control amount and direction.
@TheConservator $25 is a lot for seeds! My Sarracenia seeds were like $10 for ~25 seeds. Open pollinated seeds definitely sounds cool, though. If they're from wild plants, though, it makes me wonder if it was legal as I thought seed collecting on wild plants, such as Sarracenia, was only legal with specific permitting/permission. I think it just depends on the plants' conservation status in the state (and probably nationwide as well).
Thanks for the info about the Maxsea! I dont have any yet, but whenever I do have some I will definitely be trying it on my heliamphora & sarracenia seedlings first. About the trays, mine dont go quite up to the top of the pots but more so roughly halfway up the pot. I think before hurricane season I'm gonna poke holes in the trays so they can't fill up all the way just to prevent anything major happening.
@Merranda i actually asked him about the poaching thing. He emailed me credentials showig he was part of some sarracenia dock rescue organization and was authorized to collect and sell.
I couldve saved quite a few but im awefully plant busy! 2 years skipping dormancy is alot if time and effort for me i felt right now.
These photos are incredible
@Merranda I love your pix!
