Have you ever been so mad at a genus of plants that it became your obsession out of spite? No? Just me? 🀣

I killed a Poly. And then a Regal Shields. And then that reverse psychology set in and I was like, β€œDamn it, I’m gonna figure these #Alocasia out!”

I did my research. I nervously got an #AlocasiaBambino since they stay small, and I wanted to be able to keep my newest pet project at eye level on my desk so I could monitor any changes. πŸ‘€

A few weeks later, I think I’ve finally figured it out! No more brown spots! No more yellowing! No more crispy tips! No more drooping! πŸ₯³

For anyone else struggling with Alocasia (I FEEL YOU), here’s what I changed that ended up helping me:
β€’ I moved it farther away from the light. It’s now about 5ft away from a southeast facing window, so it doesn’t recieve any direct light.
β€’ Instead of a ceramic pot like before, I switched to a terracotta pot to increase breathability.
β€’ I switched to exclusively bottom watering, 20 minutes seems to do the trick.

I’m so excited! I was getting so discouraged, and starting to believe that I would never be able to keep an Alocasia alive. Turns out, all I needed was to make a few simple changes. #WednesdayWins

TL;DR β€” Struggling with a particular genus of plants? Don’t give up. Treat it like an experiment!

Yay!!!!! So happy to hear you mastered your plant nemesis! What a great reminder to keep going and learning when faced with struggle.
Way to go....you got this alocasia thing!!!! πŸ₯³πŸ₯³πŸ€―πŸ₯°
@PlantEsteem thanks Mary! Fingers crossed 😩🀞
Get an Alocasia zebrina. I got one and was hesitant but it’s been pretty easy…I even have a new leaf pushing out!
I have more experience growing these jokers from corms and props than I do caring for whole plants because the leaves always rot on me or dry up.

I've changed how I water them and that seems to have helped so maybe I'm getting the hang of it?

Your bambino looks great!
@TJphilobsessed ahh new leaves are so exciting! Good luck! You’ll have to share with us the grand reveal when it finally unfurls πŸ˜…
@tmbryant37 they can definitely be finicky 😩 I think philos are the dogs of the plant world, and Alocasias are cats πŸ˜‚
@lazyplantparent Well... I don't know about that. I think Calatheas are more dramatic and picky than Alocasia. At least they accept tap water 🀣
@lazyplantparent Can you send me an email please? Have a project I need your help with. Tabetha.bryant@gmail.com
@tmbryant37 sure thing! Will do now!
Bless your experience and experimenting. I've just started caring for alocasias and they are so frustrating. I killed 2 and another is yellowing but prior to reading this I also suspected too close to the window (sun patterns just changed enough to put more light through the window too so I'm hoping the move will help. I will cry if I kill another. πŸ˜‚
