New plant babies and naming joy

#PlantsMakePeopleHappy #HappyPlants #PlantAddict #NewPlants #NYCGregGang #GregGang #NewPlantMom Two new plant babies for me today. The #DracaenaFloridaBeauty (thanks @ManyLime) I named Chan after my homegirl who lives in Florida and she’s one of the beauties in my life. The #Coleus ….is yet unnamed. Very happy with the additions to the family πŸ’šπŸ’›πŸ’œ Two down and 4 more coming my way… πŸ’‰πŸ’ŠπŸŒ±πŸͺ΄ Oh!! And the 4🌡 from my #PlantGirlfriend down I-95 πŸ₯°

@MrsSmith I would suggest keeping them away from your other plants for a few weeks though and spraying with Natria. Wipe down leaves and inspect closely so you know if there are any crawlers.
Ooh! That's good light! Those are so pretty! Great picks!
@AwesomePlants Thanks Awesome!!! ☺️☺️ Never know what you get once you meet up with a private seller. I would’ve just said β€œNo thank you β€œ and turned around had the pictures been a catfish. But these 2 were on point. I’m very happy with them both πŸ’šπŸ’šπŸ’š
@AwesomePlants Thank you. That makes perfect sense. I’ll inspect the leaves now. Do I wipe them down with water, alcohol….? And I don’t have any Natria but I can pick some up tomorrow πŸ‘πŸΎ
@MrsSmith You don't have to spray with alcohol. I do because I have so many plants. You can just wet a cloth and wipe down leaves. And you can use Natria any time as it's gentle enough to use. I added the gallon size of Natria into my monthly plant budget cuz I'm a little trigger happy spraying my babies down.

Ohhhh those are gorgeous!
@ManyLime Thank youuuuu!! I was hoping it wasn’t a catfish. And I would’ve politely walked away with my money in my pocket if it was. But thankfully they were as vibrant and gorgeous in person as they were in their posts. Hopefully I can maintain and enhance their natural beauty πŸ™πŸΎπŸ’š
@AwesomePlants Done and done βœ… No critters thank God πŸ™πŸΎπŸ‘πŸΎ Thanks for the Natria link. Amazon always comes through. I’ll probably get the smaller bottle.
I have a bunch of Coleus on my balcony. You're gonna need a bigger pot for it soon if it keeps getting nice light in that window.

Forgive the slight wilt; it's been rather hot here the last few days and I didn't get out to water them as often as I should have πŸ€¦β€β™€οΈ
@tmbryant37 I’m excited about the idea of growth and a bigger pot!! ☺️☺️☺️
@tmbryant37 My friend just sent me this and I was like 🀀 She’s the one who got me turned on fully to this planting life.
@tmbryant37 So she’ll do well in that direct afternoon sun (west facing window)?
@tmbryant37 And your philodendron moonlight is πŸ€€πŸ˜πŸ’šπŸ’› dreamy!!
@tmbryant37 And your Homalomena Selby πŸ’–πŸ’š
Absolutely. My balcony is south facing and my coleus are on the the end that is NOT shaded by the tree off to thr side so they get lots and lots of sun. And well, you see how tall they got this year πŸ˜‚

I bought them all as little guys from my local nursery in those 6 packs like you get other annuals. I never fertilized them (I can only imagine thr forest I'd have if I did) so that's all the result of sun, rain, and waterings in between. They are potted in Miracle-Gro potting soil so I guess they were fed to some extent.
Aww, thank you! That moonlight is even bigger now than it was when I got it.
@tmbryant37 All of that in a year?!?!!! 😳 Am I understanding you right? Ok ok. Great. That’s helpful and encouraging. I’m not sure what soil it’s in right now since it was a Marketplace purchase but I use Miracle Gro as well so it’ll be repotted in that eventually.
@tmbryant37 #PlantFast #PlantFast #PlantFast πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚ I’ve gotta keep reminding myself when I look at that Moonlight πŸŒ™ πŸ’š
Yep, all of that this year, so get ready! Since it's later into the growing season now you may not end up a Jack and Giant Beanstalk, lol, but I would expect it to grow out of its pot before it goes dormant.

Mine have slowed down quite a bit at this point, but they grew quickly when I first got them. A lot of them have gone to flower now so I have to figure out how the seeding works. I think I'll try to harvest the seeds for next year. These are technically annuals if I recall, and there is no way these big devils are comics in the house over the winter to be saved 🀣
@tmbryant37 Two questions…What do mean when you say that it’ll go dormant? When does that happen? Ok three questions…what does it mean that they’ve β€œgone to flower”?
These plants are annuals, so in nature they will die off at the end of the growing season. Since you are growing it indoors it shouldn't do this since there will be no environmental triggers telling it to do so.

That being said, many plants will go dormant in the late fall and winter when they more or less stop growing and just have enough energy to survive until the spring. This is not just for coleus but many of our houseplants will go through this period of non-growth where they just maintain themselves until its time to grow again. This is because in nature there would not be enormous rain or sun in the winter months to do any growing, and the plant knows this even if it's growing indoors, so it slows down progress ot stops altogether until it's time to get going again.

When annual plants are close to the end of their lives they will flower (if that's how it produces seeds). In this case flowering is how coleus produce seeds, so once they begin to flower you should expect the plant to die shortly after the flower completes its life cycle.

If you want to prolong the life of the plant, and also to encourage it to stay compact and bushy, you can pinch the flower spikes off as soon as they appear. I chose not to do this so mine are tall and lanky, and should all die off sometime this fall. I plan to collect the seeds once the fruit pods appear and try my hand at growing them from seed next spring.
@tmbryant37 Got it πŸ‘πŸΎ So helpful. Thank you. Truly.
Sorry that answer was so long. Maybe it was more ingo than you needed but hopefully it helps!
@tmbryant37 Nooooo!!! I’m a knowledge junkie and this is super helpful. I love attaining new information. I’m just that kind of person. That was detailed and I understood it all. Felt like I was drinking it in and didn’t know I was thirsty. It was perfect. No need for an apology.
Absolutely! I've had lots of folks impart knowledge to me and I enjoy passing it along to others who are interested in learning like I am.

You'll have to keep us updated on what you name it and how it grows. I'm very curious to see how it overwinters since it is an annual growing indoors
@tmbryant37 Screenshotting it so I have it to refer to later on πŸ‘πŸΎ

@tmbryant37 I feel the same when I have info to share. Always happy to share the wealth. Especially when someone has a genuine desire to learn. I will definitely keep you posted. I hope I do well with it. I’m confident that I will πŸ™πŸΎπŸ’ͺ🏾
You got this!
@LatiTish84 Thank you friend!! πŸ’–πŸ’šπŸ’–πŸ’š So happy they weren’t a catfish girl.
@SoothingBogbean isn't coleus what you have?
@MrsSmith so for philos, I recommend this philo soil mix:

Put a little leca at the bottom of the pot to help with drainage.

Miracle Grow Tropical soil
Orchid Bark
Coco Coir
Worm Castings
Perlite

I learned from the best aroid #PlantSis @FitSedum πŸ’–
@AwesomePlants I don’t have any philodendrons yet. My first will be the prince of orange. Might name her Eve in honor of that ☺️ And I ordered her on Sunday from Gabriella. Still no shipping notification but the site said it usually ships within 2-5 days so I’m trying to be patient. Thanks for the soil tips. Eve may be my first Philo but I know she won’t be my last 🍊 πŸ’š
@AwesomePlants I mix all of these for the soil? Equal parts?
@MrsSmith you won't need to repot right away and maybe wait till you get more aroids to dive in to the soil mix. The mix is like our grandmas giving us recipes, πŸ€·πŸΏβ€β™€οΈ measurements. Facetime me when you're ready. I mix some of all of those in a 2 gallon ziploc as my ready made mix.
