Pica is the most floweringingingest cactus I have ever had. It has been constantly blooming after resting for the winter. I did not expect this because last year it was a little ball and only got one flower. Ever since winter dormancy it’s turned into a blob of pups with never ending flowers. I probably should start selling pups off of it soon. Especially since all the pups already keep getting a million flowers also. Such a crazy cactus. Got lucky to find this cactus. Had no idea it would be this awesome. #HappyPlants #PlantsMakePeopleHappy #PlantAddict #NewGrowth #SucculentLove #CactusClique #Cactus #flowerpower #FloweringPlants #WeirdPlants #Weirdos

Love their little flower crowns. I can stare at your cacti all day. πŸ’–πŸŒ΅ if you ever give/sell pups, I’ll gladly take a mystery box and pay shipping 😁
This is how it looked exactly about one year ago last September
So beautiful 😍 the difference is so dramatic
Amazing amount of growth πŸ™Œ in one year @SirLiquorice you should be very πŸ‘. What is your secret. Sun, water and soil.
@SirLiquorice my new one!
@FirstCanna that’s awesome I’ve been wanting a rainbow hedgehog. They have big awesome flowers once they get big enough
Are they white @SirLiquorice
@Stall54Jo this one is actually in thunderhead potting mix which doesn’t have enough drainage for my liking for cacti normally. I would normally want to add more rocks or perlite. Luckily this one hasn’t had rot issues. But I am very careful not to over water and I wait a long time in between watering. I always use reverse osmosis or distilled water and sometimes I mix vinegar to make it more acidic so the cactus absorbs the nutrients better. I also will mix cactus fertilizer in when I do that and I add safer brand insecticidal soap to kill any root bugs that may be hiding as a preventative measure. I may start using the liquid bonide systemic poison in the water as a preventative. It gets sun only in the morning. From 8am until almost 1 then the sun goes behind the building and it gets shade the rest of the day. So it may be a combination of the nutrients in the soil that thunderhead has like bat guano and then also the fertilizer and vinegar seems to help. But mainly it was in the cold weather and got to go dormant and rest for the winter. After resting the growth and flowering exploded
@SirLiquorice imma gonna πŸ’• this cactus… πŸ₯°πŸ₯°πŸ₯°
@FirstCanna yeah that’s why I have wanted one for at least a year now. I almost ordered one from planet desert but I didn’t have enough to get it also. I was already buying too many weird euphorbias. But that’s still one of the only ones that I still have on my wish list.
@mysugaredlife yeah I didn’t expect that. My girlfriend was disappointed at first that it didn’t stay the way it was. She wanted it to stay in the same ball shape and just get larger. But it started going all weird and started growing babies all over it. I’m much more happy with it now the way it came out. She still says she prefers the old look but I know she still loves it the way it is now. She was even out there taking pics of it before I was today since it had the ring of flowers again. And her mom wants one now
@FirstCanna is the red flower still being stubborn and not wanting to open?
@kscape this is how is looks when the flowers are starting to close for the night. They close completely and open again the next morning as long as the flowers aren’t completely done. There’s at least one that won’t open again
@SirLiquorice those are so precious. How long does a flower last?
@kscape seems like they last at least 3-4 days approximately. They open a close more times than a lot of my other cacti it seems. Some only last a day. Some only bloom once at night so you can easily miss it. This one only blooms once at night. I missed the first flower because I didn’t know I had to watch it all night. By the morning it’s long gone
@SirLiquorice I gave up on the red flower it’s not ever going to open😩πŸ₯ΊπŸ˜’
@FirstCanna when was it watered last? Sometimes the flowers open right after they get rain. They bloom quickly after to attract pollinators before they run out of water. Sunlight and water can make a difference sometimes
@FirstCanna I’m trying to find more info. β€œThe opening and closing mechanism is triggered by changes in light or intensity or temperature. Cells in the flower expand or contract, causing the flowers to open or close. This behavior is called β€œnyctinasty.”
@FirstCanna β€œCuriously enough, many cactus flowers are wide open from about 12 a.m. to 4 p.m. and then start to close although at that time both the light intensity and the temperature are at their highest”. This is one article I found but trying to find more
@FirstCanna could also be if it isn’t getting enough consistent darkness at night also. Some need 12 hours of dark every night. Many plants do just to flower. But that may not be the problem. I’m wondering if it’s a combination of needing more heat light and water at the right time. Especially because it tries to open and can’t
😳πŸ₯° Stunning πŸ˜πŸ’šπŸͺ΄πŸŒ΅πŸŒ΅πŸŒ΅πŸ’šπŸ’šπŸ’šπŸŒ΅πŸ’š
@SirLiquorice They are the Cutest, Prettiest and Most Fing Adorable Cacti I have ever seen!!πŸ’šπŸŒ΅πŸ’šπŸŒ΅πŸ’šπŸŒ΅πŸ₯°πŸ’–
Thank you @SirLiquorice for that info. I appreciate you taking the time to write it all out for me. I am so in love with those booms!
@SirLiquorice I put this on my home screen so I can keep referring to it!πŸ˜ƒπŸ˜ƒπŸ˜ƒ thank you! Also I do believe the red flower is not going to open and I will have to wait until next year…πŸ₯ΊπŸ₯ΊπŸ₯Ί
@SirLiquorice today could be the day!πŸ˜›πŸ˜›πŸ˜›
@FirstCanna yep it’s definitely trying. Just needs the same consistent light every day possibly. Now it may be adapting to the sunlight schedule it’s been getting the past few days.
@SirLiquorice I put it out everyday at the same time for four days now…
@SirLiquorice @PlantEsteem wowowowow it’s really happening…
@SirLiquorice it’s pretty hot out there on my deck… I’d say like 85
OMFG!!!!! @FirstCanna yay!!!!!!!!!!!!! πŸ₯³πŸ₯³πŸ₯³πŸ₯³πŸ€― amazing....keep me posted....it's looking beautiful!
@FirstCanna yep. Never give up. Just needs the same consistency in light and heat for a certain period of time is my guess. Now it seems like it’s getting used to it.
That flower will be about as big as the cactus or bigger Possibly
@FirstCanna it already looks cool enough just partially open like that. If you had any other flowers on other cacti you could use a paint brush to pollinate them with each other so they grow fruit with seeds
@SirLiquorice that sounds interestingπŸ€”
@FirstCanna then they get fruit like this one I have and it’s full of seeds. You can try and grow more from seed then if you wanted. You will see many nurseries with paint brushes by all the cacti for that reason
@FirstCanna this one also has fruit growing after the flowers were pollinated
@SirLiquorice I was reading about the rainbow hedge hog I got and the article said it would produce fruit after the flower that is edible…
@SirLiquorice I like the looks of that one πŸ˜€
@FirstCanna this is back when I bought it
@FirstCanna other one used to be much fatter. This heat shriveled it up. I didn’t use a paintbrush πŸ–Œ to pollinate this one. The bugs must’ve done it. Or butterflies or whatever
@SirLiquorice love the yellow flowers… I just ordered a Christmas cactus that’s supposed to have yellow πŸ’
@SirLiquorice so cool 😎
@FirstCanna yeah there’s a good amount of cacti that will grow edible fruit. That’s pretty cool when you can eat it. Usually only problem is all the seeds. Like prickly pear fruit. It’s really good but you have to try to remove a million tiny seeds or just swallow the tiny seeds whole since you can’t really chew them. But I would definitely want to try the fruit. Just don’t use any systemic poison if you plan to eat the fruit later
@SirLiquorice I use paint brushes but not for cacti…
@SirLiquorice I really don’t think I will eat the fruit🀣🀣🀣
@FirstCanna that first one reminds me of the old wooden bridge in Vermont
@SirLiquorice it’s actually in Pennsylvania
@SirLiquorice yep they are everywhere
@FirstCanna I tried painting this one. Used paint markers only on a canvas
@FirstCanna my friends mother is an artist. She’s better than I am by far. She painted this one with water colors using only one color. Forgot what that’s called. She said the style but can’t recall
@SirLiquorice did it open anymore?
@SirLiquorice awesome painting!
@FirstCanna this is some of her other art
@FirstCanna Yeah it looks more open now
@SirLiquorice that’s awesome work on the sketches really awesome!
@FirstCanna it seems to be finally getting more used to the light schedule. It’s really cool that the flower is still good. It stayed dormant without opening for a long time. But it was just waiting for the right conditions I guess.
@FirstCanna the barn and sunflowers might be my favorite of the 4
@FirstCanna the dog and bridge are pretty cool also
@FirstCanna but you might want to try the fruit if the cactus grows any. Cacti can have really good fruit. Dragonfruit and prickly pears are really good. Kinda expensive to buy at the store. Especially dragonfruit
@SirLiquorice I think the flower isn’t any good… look at it close up
@SirLiquorice I love dragonfruitπŸ’•πŸ’•
@SirLiquorice is that a starry night?
@FirstCanna the flower might be at about the end of its lifespan. This one only opens for about a day and a half. So now that yours has been opening it might be about finished but still don’t give up just in case it opens more. But still cool it opened pretty good. At least got to see the flower much better. Next flower will be even better or maybe even more than one at the same time. The last two started getting more than one. And yeah that’s an attempt at a starry night painting πŸ–Ό
@SirLiquorice I can’t wait for the next flower…πŸ₯°πŸ€£ and it’s not a bad attempt… I knew what it wasβ€¦πŸ˜
@FirstCanna after your cactus rests over the winter it will most likely flower much more next year. This thing won’t stop and just last year it had one flower that fell off and never bloomed and then only had one bloom. Now it’s like this today exactly a year later.
@FirstCanna that’s the only painting I’ve done like that using all paint markers of different types. They are really good markers. I’ve seen people do awesome stuff with them. But that was my first and only try doing that.
@SirLiquorice I want one like that!
