So I bought this lithops a few months ago is knowing it was cemented into a death trap. I figured Iβd rescue itβ¦ eventually. Well, the little guy on the right has lost 2 nubs and is clearly dying. Any advice for removing the cement sealing the lithops into this pot? Thank you! #HappyPlants #PlantsMakePeopleHappy #PlantAddict #SucculentLove #LithopsArmy #Lithops
@RestfulSkyplant kind ofβ¦ itβs hard, black, and gritty. It crumbles when I pick at it.
@LaSiguanaba weird... I would suggest submerging the whole plant in some water and gently swish it around. It would be a more gentle way of loosening the "soil" then picking at it. If the pot has a little drainage hole even better! Then you can gently push the plant out of its pot and remove the "soil" faster. Once it's more free then dry it off and repot it in some good succulent soil.
@Nocturnal666 Iβm actually thinking of going this route tbh. When all else fails, smash!!!! π
@RestfulSkyplant Thanks for the advice. Iβd really hate to lose these guys. I may just take a hammer to the pot. Disparate times, desperate measures!!! ππ
Is this from Trader Joe's? I saw a bunch of posts recommending to repot immediately.
The black stuff was glued in but it thankfully came off easily but I ripped off half the roots trying to get that soil off
I still have no clue on how often to water these things! π₯΄

@NotableKonjac Yes, it was from Traders Joeβs!!! I should have dealt with it a while ago but it was easier to ignore, lol.
Ahh I got a lithops from TJβs with that stuff too π
I had to gently loosen the black things from the top of the pot so I could remove the inner plastic pot. I just had to pick at them carefully, but got most of them, removed it from the plastic and potted it back in the nicer ceramic it came with, free of the black things and with a bit more room! They seem to be doing well π
The thing Iβve learned is when in doubt, DONT water lol and when the outer nubs start wilting off, they are just splitting and itβs a normal part of their process. π

Hmmm...that is quite a "sticky" situation, @LaSiguanaba.
The only thing I can think of is to chip away at it with a small chisel or use a rotary tool very, VERY carefully. What is the "substrate" it is cemented to? That might make a difference in how you approach the problem.

@UltraKoreanfir I really canβt tell exactly what the gritty stuff isβlooks a lot like mini-concrete π I think I will carefully chip away at it with a small chisel. It will die eventually if I donβt do anything. π°
