Came up with a great idea for this community! I’m one of those people that aren’t doing well financially (and never have…lol) so I’ve thought of maybe starting a community called #PlantingOnABudget! Ideas, tips and tricks and how to’s on how to go about Planting on a Budget! Anywhere from #CannedPlants #TeamCan to #PropagationStation! Not just for those that can’t afford to plant, but also for those that like to find ways to save cash, small gift ideas, etc! πŸ˜‰βœ¨

For example, can’t afford rooting hormones? Check #ScienceWithGreg for ways to root slow-growing cuttings by using #Pothos! 🌿✨

Let me know what you guys think! 😁

It be like that
Love it! I am a #FrugalPlantMom ! Most of my outer pots came from the Dollar Tree and Walmart for less than $3! I love shopping at the Dollar Tree for plant supplies (prop containers, plastic ware for seedlings, even inner pots).
@AwesomePlants Same girl! Recently got myself some 6” plastic pots from the Dollar Tree! They’re honestly great and get the job done, especially if you’re propagating and just using it as temporary, or for a rehab plant! 🌿

OR, gifting a plant in a pot instead of purchasing ridiculously overpriced pots!! 🫣
Seems like a dope idea to me Dariana!
@kscape I even bought some little buckets for 3" pants as outer pots, trash cans for some 9" outer pots! Let me find them so I can take pics.
I'm a cheap terracotta pot gal. I just don't like that orange color! I've found pretty marbled chocolate,grey and white ones. The smaller ones are only $2.
Also I was watching a YouTube video about getting fallen leaves from box stores to propagate! If anything ask permission to take but honestly, a succulent leaf? I don't think they would care. I've found a nice piece of tradescantia and I asked the cashier if it's ok if I take it. Honestly they don't even notice if you have a leaf in your cart. Not promoting, just noting my observations lol.
Like you said stuff is expensive! I have a few plants that came from broken off pieces that I found and saved!
@ManyLime I was reading about this and it’s an actual crime I think πŸ’€πŸ’€ Proplifting they call it. I’m sure if you ask permission though, they’ll be okay!

I’ve done it before and most didn’t care honestly, or never noticed. I always said to myself, the big box stores don’t suffer from these losses, they’ve already made their profits. I’m sure they can live without a few leaves BUT I’m not encouraging lol. Do what you think is right and don’t get caught if you do!
Yessss this is a great idea, to help many in this community who just don't have the budget but have and love plants πŸ’žπŸ₯°πŸŒ±πŸŒΏπŸ’›
I joined!
@kscape I prop shop, but not proplifting, I always ask especially the associate in that area and the cashier!
@kscape ooooh! THAT I didn't know! So yes always ask permission! Like you said the box store suffers NOTHING. I returned a plant once and asked what would happen to it. She said they toss them. They get fully refunded for the plants that are returned so it's like πŸ€·πŸΎβ€β™€οΈ that's why some give you a hard time about getting a discount on half dead plants.
Great idea @kscape !!
@AwesomePlants I love that store too!! However my local location has barely any plant supplies and it’s very sad. πŸ˜‚πŸ₯²
@tango The fun part is finding non-plant items and making them plant items! Trash cans and buckets for pots. Champagne and wine glasses for a #PropagationStation . I'm a but obsessed with #DollarTree . I have different DT locations for different things. I've driven like 40 minutes to a different DT JUST to see if they have something different!πŸ€¦πŸΏβ€β™€οΈπŸ«£
@kscape @tango @TJphilobsessed Some of my #DollarTree finds!! πŸ€‘
Yesssss! Whenever you can, make a post about these finds too and how you can use them using the #PlantingOnABudget tag! I’ll be doing one sometime soon as well about my prop boxes and #PropagationStation! 😊
Love it!
@ForFoxSake I’m sorry this meme is freaking amazing πŸ’€πŸ’€
#dollartree is my go-to for awesome plant finds.
@melodey Yessss! I got the last little bottles! That’s what I’m using for my Philos and Syngonium 🀭
@kscape I propped some Cebu blue πŸ₯°πŸŒΏ
Here’s a thought, my friends and I swap cuttings of our plants. It’s a good way to get some new plants
@SupernalKoa Oh yes this is an amazing idea! We currently have tags for people to swap cuttings locally! For example, in in Central Texas and we have #CentralTexasGang! Hoping one day we all meet up for a swap! 🀭

Try searching your area maybe? 😁
@melodey oooo those look like good cuttings! I have this little bottle I got from the Dollar Tree as well for my Cebu Blue πŸ₯Ή
@melodey and @kscape πŸ‘€ I have NOT seen these new little vases yet!! Gotta go to a different city tomorrow JUST to pick up tropical potting soil πŸ™„... gonna scope out the DT out there for those! Ty!
@AwesomePlants I do get most all of my pots from the dollar store! Even stuff that isn't necessarily sold as a pot I buy because I just take my drill and put drainage holes in the bottom! I even got as far as to buy the thicker plastic pots and drill holes in the sides about an inch from the top and I've made my own hanging baskets!
@kscape this is an amazing idea! I am also a person who loves plants but has a limited budget. For instance, this week I can't buy any plans and it's killing me. I don't even have two bucks in my budget for a plant this weekend.😩 I'll absolutely join that hashtag and contribute to it!
@kscape Turned an empty wine bottle into a prop container!
@Marthamaywho92 @kscape I feel the budget thing, especially this week... Which is probably why I'm propping everything πŸ€£πŸ˜…βœ‚οΈ
@AwesomePlants the small vases are so cute! I got two πŸ₯°
@Marthamaywho92 This makes me so happy! The more people show how to Plant on a Budget, the better! I’d love to show people that you can be low-cost to no-cost and still have an abundance of plants! 😁🌿✨
@melodey I have more cuttings than plants now because I’ve been giving away so many and making space to start new babies from scratch! 🫣πŸ₯²
@melodey that's what I'm going to do tomorrow.. chop and prop.βœ‚οΈβœ‚οΈ If I can't buy a new plant, I'll make one! 🀣
@AwesomePlants Love the wine bottles as prop stations omggggg! Imagine a water propped trailing micans 😍😍😍

I have way too many empty wine bottles laying around…you gave me ideas 😌
@AwesomePlants oh wow!! I’ll have to check next time. My usual shopping buddy is annoyed because it’s now the β€œ$1.25 store” so I’ll have to go alone sometime. πŸ˜‚
@tango More goodies for you!! πŸ˜‰πŸ˜‰
@tango I was like that at first, but they have a much BETTER selection so now I'm okish with paying that extra 25cents. Lol
@AwesomePlants haha yes! I am too. 😊
@AwesomePlants @tango Sad about the $.25 too but like, honestly for what they have, Target/TJ Maxx be charging $25-$30 for simple ass pots when you can get yourself some cute vases and temp pots at the Dollar Tree! πŸ˜πŸ’Έ
I just grabbed these today at the thrift store for $15! The pie plates and tart plates make great drain plates
@kscape oh definitely!! Or at goodwill… I went today and found an adorable light blue one! A tiny chip but I can put it in the back and no one will notice. πŸ˜… My silver sword will love it!!
@Wickedlemons that’s such a good idea!! Wish I’d thought of that when I was there. πŸ₯²
@tango I try to grab a couple every time! The are cheap, easy to clean an reuse!
@Wickedlemons next time I go I will pick some up too. 😁 thanks for the advice!
Definitely joining in on this for πŸ’° budget reasons AND I’m definitely into repurposing anything I can! Butt chug πŸ’¦ pots are old Tupperware and plastic containers from food, one of the best is a cookie container from Trader Joe’s that’s big enough for the larger πŸͺ΄πŸͺ΄. Tops from those containers make great saucers which are 1.49 at the big box stores. If you’ve got a lot of plants those things add up! I recently got small coir cups for props that I plan on giving away. The pack of 12 were like $2. I put the cup in a container to hold the πŸ’¦. I repurpose small pots for bigger cuttings. Who doesn’t like to save $$ and help reduce landfills?
Btw I’m so inspired by the Thrift shop finds. And the great Dollar tree bargains πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘. Keep the ideas coming! 😊
@melodey I think I’ll prop my Cebu also today. It’s getting leggy.
@TJphilobsessed βœ‚οΈπŸŒΏπŸ™Œ I'm like 🀏 close to chopping my #pinkprincessphilodendron
@TJphilobsessed Do it! Make your plant fuller and lush 😍🌿
@melodey you get to make more PPP babies 🀭
@kscape I already have 2 more bébé PPP 🀣🫣

I need to find new homes for at least like 2 of the new PPP when I do. 🀣 There's going to be 4 new plants from this big girl
@melodey Oh if it were me, I’d say β€œMore bΓ©bΓ©s!!” and either trade cuttings here OR locally! Maybe someone has a plant near you that may be looking for a PPP bΓ©bΓ©? 😌
@kscape @AwesomePlants I’ve got enough wine bottles to probably start my own nursery! I put the fairy lights in them and line them up. It’s especially fun at Christmas. I’m going to try the Micans in a wine bottle. You inspired me Dariana!
@kscape I'll probably trade for something equally cool 😎
@TJphilobsessed Yes! I have so many wine bottles I might just toss in a trailing cutting and see what happens!
@melodey any ideas on what you might trade for? 🀭 tons of people here in my area are looking for PPP!
@melodey what is in the flamingo?? I love it!
@TattedHibiscus a Variegated Heartleaf Hoya πŸ₯°
@melodey thank you πŸ₯°
