Beating fungus gnats on a budget!

Well, cinnamon sprinkled, sticky fly traps added, and fingers crossed. I’ll be spraying neem oil and water this evening to try and help too. I will beat these fungus gnats 😐

I got the neem oil and cinnamon for a grand total of £3.98 from my local international supermarket - saved myself about £15 I recon! 💅🏻

Send me your best wishes #GregGang 😭🪴

Good luck! They are soooo annoying! I had to pull out the big guns and use Bonide granules. I was so relieved to remove the distasteful fly traps when they were gone lol
You got this!! 🙌🙌
I have fungus gnats on my string of pearls, they are the worst!
@babyfiretiger13 thank you!! I’m trying everything I can to avoid spending any more money than I have to, but I’m already looking at the next options just in case 😭🪴
@Nallon hopefully your fungus gnats know what’s good for them and will leave ASAP lol
@babyfiretiger13 yeah, by “sprinkle” I might have meant “layered” 🤣
@Nallon haha sprinkled just sounds a bit less harsh! They are still gods creatures nonetheless 😇 🐛…but they also need to stay in their lane lol
I battled them with neem oil and sticky traps and eventually won but it was a long process 😭
@babyfiretiger13 they don’t pay me rent so they need to leave x
The ladybird in my bathroom pays their way so I’m okay with them though 🤣🌱
@Leafeon I will win this 🥲🌱
The sticky traps did it for me. I still keep them around in case I see one…or five…
@Nallon 😂😂😂
Like so!!
@emmiev123 I wish you the best with your tiny enemies 😭😭
Try a mixture of water and rubbing alcohol. This might help.
I use mosquito dunk water! You can also try mosquito bits in the soil. Biological control, safe for pets.
I battled with them for months and eventually won the battle with sprinkling diatomaceous earth on the dirt of all my plants and limited watering
I love your setup! I too have used mosquito bits with success in ridding my monstera. As a last resort I completely change the soil to a fresh batch. Good luck!!
Mosquito pellets help kill the ones in the soil. Flypaper is the way to go for the adults - if you can tell which plant is the most infested you can put a box over it with the sticky flypaper to get the majority. Good luck!
When my pathos had fungus gnats I moved it into water and put the pot outside to freeze for a few months
If you can put some rocks over the soil, that would help to. They are attracted to the moist soil. Gnats are evil little buggers!
Also bottom watering if you can (along with all the other great ideas above!)
Ooh cinnamon?! Taking notes ✍️
I have many options in my pest arsenal to combat all the bugs. Sticky traps, DE, Neem, granules, different spays and decorate rocks on top. Seem them still around here and there. But unfortunately one of my sticky traps caught a little lizard 🦎:( I was able to remove the lizard, rub it in sand (it’s limbs kept sticking to itself). Hopefully it’s ok. So no sticky trap outside. Someone mentioned awhile back about sand that killed pests. It would not come up on Amazon no matter how I searched for it.
I give a water with diluted hydrogen peroxide (i usually do 3:1 water and hydrogen peroxide) and it helps kill any eggs or gnats currently in the soil and then sprinkle cinnamon on top. within a week i didn’t have any gnats!
Ooh 😮 well you are well armed!! good luck! 🍀👍
I was successful with a hydrogen peroxide and water flush and LOTS of sticky traps. Also covered the top soil with pebbles and stones.
They’re the Bain of my existences. I don’t know how to spell Bain, bane,? It autocorrected to bacon. 🥓 I have an electrocuting racket. Bwahhhhhhahhaaa
I used water soaked with mosquito bits to get rid of mine. They were super bad…but this killed them all. It took a couple cycles, so I also put in sticky traps, but the bits seriously wiped out those little effers.
Bonide systemic always works for me.
I had fungus gnats in my African Violet that I had been fighting for a year with little results then I saw something recommended by someone reputable I watch on YouTube. I gave it a shot and it worked beautifully. It is called Mosquito Bites and it looks like rabbit food pellets, but you take a small amount approximately a tablespoon and soak it for 30 minutes in water then you water your plants thoroughly and you do this three weeks in a row. I saw dramatic improvement the first treatment and my plants are still beautiful! I have found the solution ladies!! LOL Give it a shot I promise you it works!
I'm in the same boat😅 sticky traps and cinnamon added a couple days ago. I bought neem spray but haven't applied it yet.
Yes I agree they are annoying. How much cinnamon do you sprinkle on the soil?
@CalitoCarolina oh no!! I’m lucky that being in the UK, I don’t have to worry about critters like lizards! I’m glad you managed to help the friend 🦎
Yeah, I’ve seen a powder type substance, sandy-ish that supposedly suffocates pests but the reviews were really mixed!
@KikisOasis I’ve done a generous amount, the idea being that when you next water the plant, the cinnamon will act as a pesticide as it soaks through the soil, but not bother the plants. I’m really hoping it helps me!
@Nallon I just put some cinnamon on my spider plants I’m propagating. I also use Neem oil as well. Thank you for your feedback. I have one they are not bothering at all which is the second pic.
I was just about to ask about gnats and I saw your post. I will get some Neem oil and fly traps this weekend. Thank you!
Cinnamon has def helped to slow down the fungus issue w my plants !
I repot my plants in new soil and spray the roots with peroxide. This always takes care of it.
Have you tried horticultural charcoal? I helps to aerate as well as fight fungus. I’ve been mixing my own soil and the plants that have that soil seem to be doing better.
@babyfiretiger13 I love those granules!
@PlantzRLife55 same! I feel like the Bonide spokesperson at this point since I rave about them to whoever I can!
@UpcomingRainbow you’re so welcome! I’m the kind of person who will try absolutely everything natures done before going for the big boy chemicals, and that’s mostly because I’m a cheap skate!! 🤣 hope some of these methods work for you!!
@calvina ooooh I like the sound of that. I will investigate. I know the bark definitely helps but charcoal is like magic isn’t it!!
Try mixing your cinnamon with some sand and spread a healthy layer over your soil. Sand is supposed to help suffocate and prevent more from occurring since they can’t get into the soil to reproduce. I’ve read that it’s supposed to be a specific kind of cinnamon (Ceylon I think?), but we use what we can get our hands on!
@LuckyJade amazing, I love the sound of this! I will get my hands on some sand soon 🏖
My favorite solution is a healthy layer of sand over the soil. I recently bought a black sand on Amazon that is similar in color to soil and has a bit of a sparkle when the light hits it. It is really attractive and completely eliminates the problem with no chemicals.
